I think you might be on to something there. Mona always took a great interest in Ross's job. I'm sure Ross really appreciated it since everyone, not just Phoebe, gives him a hard time about his interest in his work.
For me, I really don't care if a girlfriend takes an interest in my work. However, the kissing ass thing still works for me. ;-)

Episodes are always taped weeks, if not months, in advance, because post-production on an episode take awhile. This is true with pretty much every TV show, and usually hour-long shows are taped even longer in advance.
Daytime soap operas have a pretty short production time. Since they do five hour-long episodes a week, they usually only tape a couple weeks in advance.

Damnit, I didn't want to know that. Have to look at the top of spoiler spaces more carefully in the future.
First, it's Geller, I suppose. (But Sarah-Michelle Gellar, oh, so that's where my idea Sarah came from.) Second, no hyphen between Geller and Green? Third, is it really possible in the US to give a child both parents surnames although they're not married? Or is that the reason for the absence of a hyphen, which then probably resulted in Emma Geller Geller if R&R would marry with her taking his name.
Btw.: I was kinda close with calling her Melanie in my fanfic, Spice Girl too.

Someone wrote me via PM that you can give your child any last name you want in the US, very strange IMHO. Also the concept of middle name seems to differ from continental Europe, or Germany for that matter: It's common to have more than one first name -- I have three myself -- but only one, which may be hyphened (e.g. Mary-Anne), is your "Rufname", i.e. the name you're usually called by. The legal regulations for last names changed a bit in the past, currently it's as follows:
<boring facts> e.g: Max Muster and Sabine Schmidt marry and have a kid called Hansi:
* Most often and easiest: The weds agree on one common last name, children inherit that one. Max + Sabine Muster, Hansi Muster
* The couple combines their last names with a hyphen. In the past the order didn't have to be the same. The practice for children's names changed a few years ago, I don't know exactly which is the current one, but IIRC the parents have to give it an unhyphened last name to avoid double hyphens on marriage / parent's divorce and re-marriage. Or was it that the kid can have a hyphened name until its 18th birthday? - Dunno. Max + Sabine Schmidt-Muster, Hansi Schmidt Max + Sabine Schmidt-Muster, Hansi Muster Max + Sabine Muster-Schmidt, Hansi Schmidt Max + Sabine Muster-Schmidt, Hansi Muster
Btw.: Hansi is not a legal first name in Germany, except for budgies. But young people named Hans, which are *very* seldom nowadays, are often called that way. </boring facts>
Doesn't seem so and as I understand it both, would have to claim that they're married at least once:
+----------------{ <http://www.brandeslaw.com/clmart.htm> }-----------------++---------------------------------------------------------------------------+
If I understand the above site correctly, when two 7 year-olds played wedding and noone cancelled it before the girl's 12th and the boy's 14th birthday they were legally married in Britain and the US of a not so long ago former time. ?-)

In California common-law marriage is typically accepted at 7 years, but there are exceptions which might require more time, and I don't know of any situation that would allow less time.

HERE'S SOME MORE

You already know now that Americans can give their children pretty much any surname they want. Nowadays, married women often keep their maiden names or hyphenate their own and their husband's surnames (although men almost never use a hyphenated last name; they keep their own name regardless of what their wives do).
However, giving children hyphenated surnames is not very common. The children of married couples almost always use the father's surname only. You can see why ... if every child had a hyphenated last name, what would happen when they grew up, got married, and had children? Kids with FOUR last names? Eventually, you would have to start choosing which names to use, and, unless you do it by lottery, either the maternal or paternal names are going to lose out anyway, whatever the original intentions.
Children born outside of marriage traditionally take the mother's surname, but this tradition evolved in an era when it was assumed that the father in such cases was out of the picture completely (otherwise, he would have married the mother). Nowadays, I don't know what the most common practice is, but I would bet that, when the father and mother live in the same household, the child most often ends up with the father's name.
In this case, we have two possibilities: Emma Geller-Green, in which case the surname is hyphenated, or Emma Geller Green, in which case "Geller" is the child's middle name, while her surname is Green. The latter works if Ross and Rachel never (re)marry, but it would be very odd in this country for a child not to use her father's last name if her parents are married. That's why I think the name will turn out to be hyphenated, which works regardless of Ross and Rachel's marital status, cumbersome though it is.

Actually the tradition of two last names is Hispanic. It has been used for quite a long time. The father's name comes first and the mother's name comes last. There are specific rules for which name gets dropped in the case of marriage, but sence I'm not Spanish, I don't know them. Both my children have two last names without a hypen. In practice this gets shortened to my last name. Meaning if his full name is Dustin James Schaff Hardin,in use it would be shortened to Dusty Hardin. It does not mean the last name of Schaff gets converted to a middle name. It is just human nature to look at the first name and the very last name and ignore everything that comes in between.
The tradition of two last names is to preserve the maternal line. So if the baby was named Emma Lynn Geller Green even if Rachel remarried Ross the last name Green would not change. However, I would think the baby's name would be a Jewish name as Ben's name is.

As I understand it, traditional Hispanic names are <first name> <middle name(s) if any> <father's last name> <mother's last name>. However, the father's name is the one used as a surname in the English sense of the word -- the name under which people are alphabetized, etc. Nowadays (in Latin America, at least) the matronymic is often abbreviated to a letter or dropped altogether. Watch the credits for a Spanish-language TV show, and you'll see what I mean. My understanding is also that, when a woman marries, she drops her mother's name and adds her father's name after her husband's FATHER's name -- which is considered the "family" name by which she, her husband and her children will be known. The husband doesn't change his name at all.
Thus, when Maria Diaz Vargas marries Diego Garcia Nunez, she becomes Maria Garcia Diaz. Diego keeps the name he's always had. Collectively, the couple and their children will be known as "la familia Garcia."
Look, I don't mean to offend or criticize you, as this is all entirely up to you, but I don't understand what you mean. People only have ONE surname, that is, the legal last name by which they are known officially. You can't "shorten" it, any more than you can trim a few letters off your last name (without a court order). What would your son write on an official form or school application in the box marked "Last Name"? "Schaff Hardin" or "Hardin"? If the former, then he is, in effect, using a hyphenated name but omitting the hyphen (which seems to me to be a set-up for confusion, but that's none of my business). If the latter, then his last name is Hardin, and Schaff is a middle name. I'm not in any way disputing your right to name your child as you see fit, but I am saying that it's very unusual.
But there is no such "tradition" of two last names in English-speaking countries like the USA. Everyone -- or nearly everyone, allowing for the exception you describe for your family -- has a single surname, which may indeed have originated as two names, now hyphenated into one. So, I think the baby's name is meant to be seen as E.L.G-G., and that indeed might not change if RnR remarry. On the other hand, Ross and Rachel are both very conventional people, so it would not be unrealistic or out of character for Rachel and Emma to become just plain "Geller."
