Confusion over where the balcony is

The external shots never show a balcony area. This has bothered me. Where are they?

Well, this excerpt from NBC Media Village's overview of the show explains what I could only assume was true. "Across the alley from Monica and Chandler is Monica's hapless brother Ross . . . " So, the external shots, always shot from the street side of the building, never show the balcony because the balconies are on the back side of the building.

This does create a little bit of a dilema however, because the externals of Ross' apartment building show a slightly shorter building with no six story building behind it. Unless, perhaps, I'm counting the floors incorrectly. I understand that's easy to do with his building.

It hasn't actually bothered me, but I just thought it was a bit careless of the show's continuity people. But the explanation you found can't be right:

- When Rachel throws (was it) Paolo's clothes down from the balcony, they come swirling down on the street, not in some alley. - Also I remember an episode (don't know the exact one by heart) where the camera pans from Ross' building to Monica's as an inbetween shot...

But I also can remember another 'error' (or it could be the lack of my sense of direction), is when Rachel is sleeping in Joey's room (so it's the 4th season where they switched apartments) there is that guy singing 'morning's here'. He is in a building only a couple of feet from Joey's bedroom window. But when you see the 'outside shots' the street inbetween the two buildings is at least 30 / 40 feet wide. Also it cannot be the alley on the back of the building, because although their apartments are huge (to NY standards), they're not THAT big.

Oh well, it's just a sitcom... we're just a bit too crazy about. ;o)

BTW: now I think of it. Gabrielle Union, who plays the girl that both Joey and Ross date in episode 717 (The One With The Cheap Wedding Dresses) isn't the first African-American actor to be on Friends, as I've read somewhere. It must be this 'morning's here' guy. (season 4) Although it's not a major part...

But still, I think Friends doesn't reflect reality on this specific issue.

Can't remember the name of the episode, but in the one where Joey works as a tour guide at Ross' museum, there were a couple of African-Americans. One was a fellow tour guide ("I gave you my Snak Pak!!"), and one was a fellow doctor.
