LOS ANGELES, Sept 22 (Reuters) - "Friends" star Jennifer
Aniston was named best actress in a comedy series on Sunday at
the 54th annual Primetime Emmy Awards for her role as Rachel
Green on television's top-rated show.
It was the first Emmy prize claimed by Aniston on the smash
NBC comedy, which is entering its ninth and presumed final
season. Aniston, kissed by husband Brad Pitt as she rose to
accept the prize, previously was twice nominated as best
supporting actress on the show without winning.
She won for her performance in last season's finale
episode, in which her character gives birth to the child
fathered by Ross, played by David Schwimmer.

Up until this year, they had decided to submit themselves in the supporting actor category, which David was nominated for in 1995 and Lisa won in 1998. This year, the cast submitted themselves in the lead actor category, which produced first time noms for Matthew and Matt and a first time in the lead actress category for Jennifer, which she won last night.
