Apart from in the subject line of this post, I will never intentionally use the d-word in relation to the esteemed television programme Friends again in any email or web page. My doing this helps prevent people (who would really rather we didn't distribute certain large files) from noticing us. Hence look out for future posts referring to 'my media resource'. Do not mention the d-word and the URL of my site in the same post. If somebody else does, please remove it from any reply posts. Suggest politely that they visit my site to see for themselves.

Over the course of the past few days, I have spent considerable time uploading all of the large files I have collected over the past few weeks to my new hiding place for it. I have also been setting up a new restricted access system on my site to allow readers of atf access to these files once again, after Clark's was unfortunately taken down by an inconsiderate webmaster.

I need your help. CLARK: I still lack some of the episodes you did not post. If you still have the oppurtunity to capture new ones, please keep doing it. Contact me and we will work out a way to get them to me without cost to you. This also applies to anyone else who has an episode I do not. If anyone in England has access to video capture facilities, please contact me. I have the missing episodes on PAL VHS, but have no method of capturing them. Any help you can offer will make it a better resource for anyone else.

Once this section of the site goes online, I will post to say so. This should happen some time in the next 48 hours. Instructions for gaining access to this infromation will be included in that post.

Keep your eyes peeled, people. Remember, I won't explicitly state what it is. It's coming...

Maybe that's not why it got shut down, but it *is* against the law. I'm actually surprised it lasted this long.

So am I, although I suspect it got shut down for the Futurama stuff rather than the Friends stuff or that too many people were downloading from it - Fox are on an absolute rampage at the moment, and web servers very rarely tell the truth when they're being threatened with lawsuits for whatever reason - I had a lot of fanfic deleted from my site before I shut it down, and wasn't even informed they'd been deleted until someone said that their fanfic that I'd put up ages ago wasn't there anymore.

You probably won't get a permission from Warner, and the other possiblity is covered by what is called fair use. That means, you may make copies of a TV show, but only for private use. You are allowed to ask someone else to make the copy for you, but he may not charge anything for it.

So, it doesn't matter at all whether you dub the show onto tape or into a file on your PC; the rules are the same. Therefore Clark would be allowed to send anyone copies of his files if he or she asks for, as long as it is done privately, and as long as Clark doesn't declare this a public service (i.e. advertize it on the Web/Usenet, put ads in newspa- pers etc.).

Putting something on a Web site, however, is not private. You're publi- shing the material, and that's not "fair use", no matter whether you charge for it or not. As long as you don't restrict access to a select number of persons, it's always publishing, whether you advertize for the site or not.

So in short: sorry, but it's simply not possible to legally put vidcaps of TV shows on Web sites that are publicly accessible.

In theory, you could put vidcaps on restricted servers that doesn't tell anyone anything unless it's provided with the right user/password combi- nation. Then - if you don't tell anyone publicly (E-mails okay, Postings forbidden) that the site exists and how you can get to the files - you could enable others to download you files without infringing the copyrights of Warner and/or NBC. But how would anyone know of such a site? ;-)

(Bear in mind that I'm neither a lawyer nor an expert of the US legal system; the above might still be forbidden by some legislation a simply don't know about.)

If anyone wants to implement the above scheme, though, he may e-mail me privately - being in "Season 1 again" country, I'd be interested. ;-))
