I was watching some tapes of the older seasons of "Friends"...you know, the ones where they had a nice plot and weren't trying to force a laugh and weren't trying to be too intense and too loud, and I realized that the old episodes were better.
Would anyone agree? Hasn't the show gotten a little too loud and forced?

I think that season 2 was the Best, esp. since JC Van Damme, Julia ROberts, and Charlie Sheen guest starred and the storylines were just fresher, but on the other hang I did like season 7 better than seasons4,5,and 6.

Oh come on Tennent, you know what I mean. Granted there are some great episodes in S7 but the season on the whole didn't deliver the goods like the earlier seasons of the show. I've been watching my S1 and S2 dvds again and realised the show's quality of humour has deteriorated drastically. You can't watch S7 without skipping some storylines which are either loud or forced as some others here commented.
I just hope that S8 will be like S5 and renew the shows spark.

:) She's not as bad now, I don't think. I let her slide during the episodes approaching the wedding - she must have been so happy to finally give Judy what she always thought would never occur. :) We'll see how loud she becomes again when she realizes that SHE should be having a baby, not someone else. ;)

I think season 5 was my favorite season. Not sure WHY though... lol. But I was watching reruns a few weeks back and it was just good.

Yes. I would agree. I actually boycotted the show after the awful season six, but recently caught some season seven reruns. It seems to have gotten a little better again, but you are right on target - it is loud, forced, and in many places cartoonish. I am back on the newsgroup because I can't resist the season seven cliffhanger and its implications, but you are quite right.
Friends best years were season one, season two, and season five. The show fell apart after Ross and Rachel started feuding, but perked up when Chandler and Monica were a new and fresh idea. The routine seems to be that they take good, fresh ideas, use them well at first, and then run them into the ground. I am hoping that the latest rather sensationalistic events will propel another renaissance - and that they will know to quit when they are ahead.
