!!!!!!Wait Wait, I got a Huge Friends Question!!!!!!

Hey everybody, I am quite new to this newsgroup, so I am not sure if this discussion has been brought up in this group before. Anyway here is goes. I have seen every episode of friends this season and I am cringing with disgust. I mean HOLD THE PHONE. what is happening here, Joey and Rachel please!,. I admit I am a Ross and Rachel fan, but come on Joey, I could see Rachel being with Chandler over Joey any day. Lets look at this subject just for a second. Joey and Rachel have been totally incompatible throughout the friends series, one is moderately intelligent, the other (Joey) is an airhead. Or has been up till now. Rachel also is portrayed as a female who enjoys being spoiled, and taken to classy places, she is some what of high matance. Joey on the other hand has a shaky job, small apartment, and only sees women for sex. All of a sudden, this season both characters have been rewritten. What's going on. People don't do a 180 degree change. Geeze. I also find it extremely awkward that the writers are allowing Joey to have a crush on Rachel. Think of the ramifications. First Ross loves Rachel, Rachel then loves Ross, Ross and Rachel end up together in a hot and heavy relationship. They Breakup, However they get married after that. Blah Blah Blah, Ross gets Rachel pregnant. Now Rachel is carrying Ross's Child. So why on earth if these two have been through so much would the writers even think about allowing Joey to fall in love. This is just wrong. There is a HUGE moral question which is now looming over this show. How can Joey even think about this relationship. Also just a year ago, no one wanted Joey and Rachel to get together, suddenly after 3 episodes of closeness between the two characters everyone wishes they were together. That's appalling. I am not being biased here, I am just simply disgusted, because the writers of Friends are raising unnecessary Moral questions. An example of a question would be " Is it okay for Joey to have sex with his bestfriends ex wife, who is carrying his best friends child." Come on....... Please.

Secondly, what is this I hear that David Schwimmer (sp) wants to leave the show. Can someone please elaborate on this, This is the first I heard on this subject. I had originally thought that it was the cast that had decided that this season would be the final season. Also when thinking about it, the show has been around 8 years, its time for a change of scenery. The show should in my opinion end this season but who knows.

Also if anyone has any spoilers on the rest of the season of some upcoming episodes can they please send them to me.

I also have another question. The characters in this show are now somewhere around 32 or so, isn't it just a little to late to make such radical emotional changes. I mean Joey was one way last year now he is totally different, by this I mean once your set in your ways its just a little to hard to change.

I would like to hear some replies to my commentary on the current situation of Friends. I would enjoy reading any criticism you would have on my feelings toward the shows current course of actions.

There has been absolutely no indication that anything romantic could/would ever develop between Rachel and Chandler. The friendship between Rachel and Joey has been deepening and developing since she moved in with him. This is not coming out of the blue.

While Joey may lack some of the education and quick wit that Ross and Chandler display, he more than compensates with "street smarts" and a certain self assuredness.

The Long Island Girl character is still there, obviously, but Rachel has grown and has different priorities than in Season 1.

The show kind of made a big deal of identifying her as "easy going" in contrast to Monica's high maintenance in the ep where Phoebe picked Rachel as the friend she would rather date.

Joey has displayed connections with women throughout the years. Don't really know where they go-- but as examples: the model roommate he was darn near in love with, the basket lady, and the pregnant lady delivering at the same time Ben was.

Actually, Joey has been wanting a deeper relationship with a woman. Seeing Chandler and Monica together caused Joey to have dreams of Monica with himself, and to proposition each of the female friends in sequention. (Not love or committment, but growth...)

The moral question is one of the points of the story line. The others being growth, change, and ratings in no particular order. Single parenthood is a moral question to some. Monica and Chandler (and R&R for that matter) questioned whether to cross the line from friends to "more than friends." Nothing new here.

Because Joey's had sex with lots of women, he can't fall in love? I'm assuming (and hoping) that you're still young enough to be this biased about age. Change is a part of your life until you die.

Whether Joey and Rachel actually ever develop a romantic relationship, I think the growth emphasis here is on Joey's desire to "settle down." The baby is Rachel's character growth. It may just be kind of a shock to the system because the writers haven't been all that interested in individual character growth (outside of Rachel, who has been written beautifully since day one). The growth/ change in the show has always revolved around pairings and such.
