Connecticut is one of the "tri-state" states. So, it's very close to New York. In fact, some people commute from there.

Well, in the larger scheme of things, Connecticut is a small state. On the other hand, had Chandler chosen Rhode Island (the smallest state, just east of Conn.) the joke wouldn't have been as funny since RI is known for its small size. He could have chosen Vermont, New Hampshire, New Jersey, etc. with similar results. He bathing suit wasn't big enough to cover Texas though. You'd have be REALLY big for that. ;-)
