818: Maybe William Baldwin would have been better....

I was really looking forward to this episode because it looked like Alec Baldwin could really steal the show with his annoying optimism, but he really didn't do much in the way of humor.

What did you guys think?

I agree that Alec Baldwin didn't do much for the show. Overall, though, I thought it was a much better episode than some of the others in this season. The only other thing I didn't like about the episode was the whole Monica's toast thing. I'm sure everyone saw the "punchline" a mile away, and it's just not very funny to begin with.

I expected a little more out of Monica's toast, but it didn't quite have the edge I was hoping to see. I think it would be funny to see her take some of the typical Chandler one-liners, just as he is starting to develop some of her cleaning habits.

Speaking of edges, Joey has Phoebe's basic character pegged--a positive person with an edge. Of course, it's a really sharp edge, but that's the funny part of her character IMO. The edge is in direct opposition to her sweet and caring side.

This was a markedly better eppy this season. No more dramas and we are finally back to some comedy. The moping around is finally over, Joey's back to normal and no longer dragging his tail around. That's the end of that storyline I think. Rachel was really into the phoney wedding and r/r was fun to watch. At least for me. ;-)

naa... I think the best line was: "Though we think it's absolutely marvellous that you're having this child out of wedlock..." It didn't make you laugh when you heard it, but if you think about it, it's probably one of the most hilarious things that has ever been said on Friends :-)

I like that line as well. When you first hear it, it sounds like a compliment, but after a second or two you realize that Judy has really insulted both of them.

It seemed to me that she is directing her comment more at Rachel than Ross. God forbid, her precious Ross should be any more than superficially involved. I can't verify this now because I just recorded over the ep with an hour-long thing about Stonehenge.

I dunno... The second I heard that the guests congratulate Ross on his wedding, I knew it had to be something like this... So an "insulting" type comment was already expected.

I'm sure it was... Afterall, Ross has a track-record of marrying women... ;)

Actually, she had married Ross in Vegas. :-/ Not sure if that qualifies as a wedding but they did get a free pizza at Pizza Hut - the newly wed special. :-)

But I did love Ross' reply to Rachel : "But having a dove place the ring on your finger would've been no problem." 8-)

Alec Baldwin's character was annoying. More like a bad slap stick comedy. I guess that was another poor filler plot. Monica's speech was also a let down I guess.

The good friends episodes are the ones IMO, where they have good plots all around. Like TOW truth about London or TOW the Blackout.

What I feel is instead of concentrating on filler plots give the main storyline the focus and airtime. They did that in Joey dates Rachel and it worked great.

I know, this bothered me, too. And considering she walked out on a wedding in the pilot episode, she isn't *that* far from being [like] Ross.

But the humor of their interaction kept me from getting *too* grumpy about Rachel's line. Especially since she hasn't had a wedding she can clearly remember; the Vegas wedding was an alcohol-soaked blur to both of them.

Yeah, I guess I can buy that explanation. What was her line from "TOAfter Las Vegas"? "This is not, this is not a marriage!! This is the world's worst hangover!" So, she doesn't really think of it as a marriage.

I have to say, however, that I expected them to draw more upon the fact that they were actually married. They really could have made up a lot about a wedding in Las Vegas. I was just in Vegas recently, and I was surprised how extravagant some people get. I always picture a Vegas wedding . . . well, like Ross and Rachel's. But in reality, they really can do it up right.

It seems they hardly ever allude to their having been married. It comes up now and then, but other times it seems forgotten. For example, in one of the episodes with Rachel's sister Jill, Rachel refers to having *dated* Ross, but never to having *married* him. So I guess that supports the idea that she doesn't see it as "counting" as a marriage. However, there's a bit of a double standard whenever the thrice-divorced-Ross issue comes up.
