I decided to de-lurk again just to give my views of why I think there will be a season seven and to vent my frustration about the season finale.
First of all, I'm one of those who is quite sure that there will be a seventh season. I'm not saying this due to the latest news of contract renewals, but due to the fact that if season six were to be the last season, NBC would've been advertising this event long time ago. Just check what FOX is doing, now that two of their shows (Party of 5 and � 90210) won't be back next season. I don't really know how popular are those shows, but FOX started advertising their ending several weeks ago. If that is the case for shows that are not as popular as Friends, imagine what will NBC do if their Number One comedy wouldn't come back next season. For a show as popular as Friends, I'm sure NBC wouldn't let go the opportunity to advertise to all the world that the show is ending. I'm sure that whenever they decide to end the series, they'll do something very special, like what they did for Seinfeld and Cheers (I don't remember other shows). And, also don't forget the magazines. I'm sure that if the show ends, we'll be seeing special editions or special articles in most of the entertainment magazines, and this advertisement will begin months before the last episode. Well, I said it... just my opinion.
Now to vent my frustration!! As some of you, and as an R&R fan, I was also very upset to read the spoiler for the season finale. I just couldn't believe the writers and producers will do that to the fans. I was so mad that I "wanted to go medieval on their heinie" (you know what I mean!) and I was tempted to send a letter to the producers of the show. But I didn't do it. By the way, has anybody in this newsgroup ever do that? I mean, sending a letter to the writers or producers to let them know your opinions, your suggestions or even to congratulate them (though, I doubt the latter one will happen lately). If any of you has ever done that, please let me know by e-mail ([email]). Well, going back to the purpose of my post. As I was saying, I was really mad, but then I calmed down and came up with some reasons why I believe the writers did what they did (assuming the spoiler is quite accurate and there won't be any other surprise scenes):
- They knew this wasn't the end of the show. - They didn't want to have another cliffhanger involving R&R. - They wanted to give C&M the center stage in the season finale, therefore they didn't even try to give a substantive story to R&R because they were afraid they'll out-stage C&M again - They knew David Schwimmer was not going to be available, which made it easier for them. I mean, they didn't have to write a bigger part for him, and I'm sure David didn't mind that. - Since they have been given us hints of a R&R reunion and then forget about it (so many times and for so long), they decided not to do it this time, mainly because they knew that if they gave us "one more" hint, it had to be the last one. Then, they would have to finally deliver a reunion in the following episode. That meant that R&R will have to be together starting season seven. And as you know, they have admitted they don't like to write for R&R as a couple, so if they got them together the writers will have to come up with stories for them for the whole season. So I'm guessing, that they are going to save a reunion for sweeps next year, either November or February. I'm tempted to say February. It's also my belief that Season Seven will be the last one. Therefore, they will only have to write for R&R, as a couple, for a few episodes. Of course, by holding up the reunion, they are also hoping they will keep the audience wondering when will it happen and (hopefully) keep watching.
Ok, that was just my guess of the reasons why the writers didn't give us (R&R fans) a happier season finale. I know I might be completely wrong, but thinking this way is helping me to look forward to next season and I think is going to allow me to watch the season finale without getting angry or more frustrated. Maybe I'm just too optimistic thinking that at the end of the series there will be a R&R reunion, but I rather keep those hopes up instead of making my life miserable thinking otherwise. I hope my rambling makes some sense. Now, I'm going back to my hole to keep lurking. :-) Byeeee�
