In a local newspaper yesterday (NOT A tabloid, but I'm not sure of the name), there was a little tidbit about Friends, and the gist of it was basically that things would APPEAR to be good between C&M as the issue of marriage comes up again, but that things would very quickly change for the worse through various events.
Oh, gee, Helena, I think your little scoreboard needs re-evaluating if this is the case...

Can't say as I'm surprised. I gave in and read the spoilers--they're giving too much of a buildup to this supposed proposal for it to come off without a hitch. Whether they get married or not, my biggest hope is that we're not left with a huge cliffhanger and no seventh season. Patrick

Why would anyone want this proposal/wedding plot to go smoothly? That would be the most boring outcome possible (although perfectly fitting for this contrived relationship).
What would really irritate me is if the show ends while concentrating on the Chandler/Monica relationship. The whole series has (on and off) dealt with the R&R relationship. It is really the only true ongoing dramatical plot in the show. While Ross and Rachel took time to build up to their romantic relationship, Chandler and Monica had sex with each other before they even had a romantic relationship. Ever since then their relationship has been fairly smooth, with no true bumps in the road. It has lacked total drama, and therefore is of no interest to me (and I suspect it is of little interest to a fair sized group of Friends' fans). R&R may have lagged at times, but there always seems to be something there. The thought of them having a Chandler/Monica cliffhanger ending is bad enough, but they had better not end the series with this being the primary plot. The best thing the show could do would be to break them up, but they have now been together too long for that to be a likely happening .
To all of you Chandler/Monica fans, you may not like what I have written here, but ask yourselves why you really like this relationship. Is it because is was a natural and refreshing evolution of the story, or is it more because you simply like the idea of two of the friends getting together?

It isn't how the relationship started, it's how it works out in the end.
Sweety, if the Characters don't mature, I guarentee you a lot will stop watching. This is a big sign it's going to happen. In the words of Matthew Perry "If wer're 40 and still hanging out we're just losers and no one will watch us. I think the show could survive a Marriage and a couple kids." And i think he's right too.
Actually, I just don't like anything remotely like Soap Opras.... And that is what the R&R Relationship really is like, one big ol' Soap Oprah, wound into a sitcom. Oh, and I do like them because they were friends first. Out of the boys and the girls.. Chandler and Monica had the clostest friendship. Monica was the only one to know about the Third Nipple AKA Nubbin, and the whole, Sock thing.
You shouldn't have. Not a smart thing on such a good day in my life. My sister AKA The Devil's favorite minion just left for college and that makes me an only shild till she comes back. First time in 14 1/2 years. I'm starting to wish I read this tomorrow.

Right, and that's why the only way to end the show in a manner that is poignant is to have something meaningful happen. While the show is not a drama, why would we care anything for the characters unless there were some dramatical aspects involved. Could anyone here ever imagine an episode with Chandler and Monica like the episode after Ross sleeps with the copy girl. The characters have become to cartoony and exaggerated to deal with something as serious as a painful breakup. Whether you liked the events of that episode or not, at least there was some depth to the situation. Still, many people here have come up with very solid reasons why they like these two together (whether I personally agree or not, they are valid points). However, you just come off as bitchy.

The reason I don't like that episode was for that reason. It made me cry. I think the last time I cried over entertainment was at Man on the Moon. Poor Andy :*(
I know, I do. :) It's fun seeing what kind of reaction I get. But compared to the other people in my school.... I'm just plain sweet... With a bad temper. I can tell because I'm the only one who says "Sorry" when they bump into people. (And I go to an over crowded school)

Sorry, but my sister has treated me like crap my entire life. Ever had someone of your own blood line treat you like dirt? If I were to go somewhere with her, I had to pay for gas. She has kicked me out of the house and humiliated me in front of her and my friends. When I go to get the left over speghetti, the entire POT, has been eaten. She eats half my share of the pizza. I'm not allowed to touch her radio because I broke one of hers when I was 3. She always puts me down. If I wake her up, I get verbally bashed until my head explodes, but she always wakes me up. She takes my CDs and throws them on the ground, scratches them, and when they can't work anymore, finally gives them back. She treats my mom like complete crap. If she doesn't get what she wants, It comes out of my mom's guilt. Seriously..... She is awful.

Border, I am possibly the single most vocal R&R fan on this board. (Tina might think differently.) I am not known for my devotion to Mondler - er, C&M. Let me see if I can explain the appeal as I see it, from an observers' standpoint.
I thought it was kind of fun at times when the relationship was still a secret. It has lagged of late, that's true, with the bad side effect being that they make Monica act like a crazed fishwife to generate laughs. Some people genuinely like the smoothness. R&R have done some rather appalling things to each other in the name of dramatic tension, and I think this turned a lot of people off. Ross' whining, his emotional instability, and Rachel's terrifying fickleness have turned people off. They often come across as not being very nice people. I tend to snarl at the writers for ruining something charming and lovely when that happens.

A lot of them truly feel it was. There's a lot of appeal in the idea that two close friends took a romp in the hay and woke up in love, with the added idea that the feeling may have been brewing for some time without them really knowing it. (Chandler certainly wanted Monica at The Beach.)

There's probably a lot of factors. Some folks like the idea that we could see a happy, stable relationship. I certainly agree there. I loved R&R when they were a peaceful couple, and I'd like these two better if only Monica were not so shrewish. Some folks are in love with Matthew Perry and just love it because he gets to be a romantic lead. (Be honest, girls, I speak the truth and you know it.) A smaller group may feel the same way about CCA. Some people liked the very funny "Secrets" section of this story so much their devotion has lingered, and they still see C&M as hysterically funny even though it has lagged a great deal since then. Some people are latecomers to Friends who prefer Chandler and Monica because that is the part of the story they've seen in sequence, in prime time as it unfolds rather than in reruns.
I am with you on this; I will be deeply disappointed if we don't get some closure on R&R before the show ends. Chandler and Monica doesn't really bother me, but the idea that we can suffer for three years and get a big raspberry from the production staff for our pains just makes me ache.

Ashley, I'm sorry you are in such a bad mood over what Borders said. I wasn't trying to pass judgement on anybody; there is a strong element of interest in a couple based on sexual interest in a star running around all over the place. I focused on Matthew worship because Borders seemed to want to know why people like Chandler and Monica, so I tried to come up with every reason I could think of and give the most balanced and fair-minded account possible. Attraction to Perry was just one of many, many reasons.
One thing that confuses me; you say you stopped being an R&R fan when Rachel went to ruin Ross' wedding.
But Rachel didn't ruin Ross' wedding. She grew up quite a bit on that day instead. ???
Do NOT feel like you have to defend liking C&M; I've a fairly clear reason why many people do and I think there are some good reasons in there. I was wondering about that one comment.

I am a BIG Matthew fan, I love all his little Romances... but I was a C&M fan beofre a MP fan. And I Loathed Chandler in TOW Joey's fridge.... LOATHED. It made me ill.
Makes me ache too.... I wacthed all the episodes in sydication before Seeing Part two of Ross's wedding. I was a pretty big fan of them, til she decided to wreck the wedding, then my stomach turned. I couldn't believe the writers were doing that. So I switched. So, if they A) Don't get some kind of closure on the R&R thingy or B) Leave both C&M miserable. There maybe a dead writer in the Ohio River. (I know of 4 bodies pulled out of there. I didn't do it, I swear.) May not seem like it, but I once was a big Ross and Rachel fan. But some asshole on AOL, turned it sour for me.

I am inclined to believe the spoiler because this is the kind of crap this writing staff pulls. They string us along and then disappoint us. We STILL don't know what's really going to happen, and in the past 24 hours even speculation about what *might* happen is making people bark at each other. Let's just hang tight and wait a couple of weeks. According to Larissa, we could know for sure how ticked off everybody should be in about two weeks.

Yes. That didn't sound like the kind of "twist" this staff puts on storylines. This does. It really, really sounds like "The One With the List." On the other hand, as I said before, we really *don't know* what's going to happen. The spoiler suggest that there will be problems. That does not mean the engagement is off necessarily, and it does not mean that they are going to break up. One person said there's so much buildup, there's likely to be a hitch. I agree with that because of things I've seen on this show before. Some folks are likely to read too much into the spoiler because they want a breakup, and some are likely to disregard the spoiler out of hand because they want a romantic engagement. We lack evidence either way.
I do hope, sincerely, that if this is the last season they do NOT end it with unhappiness for Chandler and Monica. That would leave a terrible taste in everybody's mouth.

And your right. We don't know what is going to happen... I mean the Cast does even see the scripts until it's time to sit around the table and they say what works and doesn't... apparently theres been some bad judgement.
Well, I've heard people say somethings that are true. Chandler is running out of storylines, and fast. Maybe, if the marriage Idea does pull through, he might be able get some more story lines. Handling the stress of marriage and children (Hey, Clocks don't tick backwards.). Fun Fun. Oh, and the Characters NEED TO MATURE. It might also help to get Phoebe in a relationship without a guy who Speaks English, doesn't shoot birds, and is unconcious.

Or three weeks (sorry I wasn't clear on that). And remember when reading the finale spoilers that there may be other stuff they filmed later. For last season's finale filming, they kicked the audience out early, and then filmed the ending with R&R getting married. Most people outside the cast and crew (well, except trusted friends I guess) didn't know that R&R was going to be a major cliffhanger too. I remember someone who went to the filming thought there was going to be something with R&R, but the public didn't know for certain what would happen until the day it aired.

This is what occured to me, actually - they must be absolutely damn certain they're getting another season if they're doing this *now*. Then again, Marta Kauffman's supposedly dropping hints about an R&R reunion again, so I don't think they are so certain. They're taking as much of a risk with C&M as they are with R&R here, and they'd better know exactly what they're doing.
I just got the new EW magazine. I can't find this quote by Kauffman anywhere. Who wants to bet it's another false spoiler along the lines of the Conversation After the Sink?

Hence the "supposedly". I couldn't find anything about it on the EW site either, and when I can't read it direct from the source I don't believe it until (if) I can. Especially lately, given that there appears to be someone who's deliberately going around posting false R&R reunion spoilers to wind people up.
Just found out the name of the newspaper: the Boston Sun, the website of which I'm checking for the article now. There was also apparently something similar said in a Chicago newspaper as well, so if that's the case I'm guessing this just might be a reliable piece of info - safety in numbers, and all that.
Hhmmmm... I might believe it if it were New York Times. Or an LA based Newspaper. But I still can't. It would be just wrong for Ashley to do so since she is 100% weirdo C&M fan. With Split personalities and a tail.

Exactly. It's not really saying anything anyone looking at it objectively (or maybe even subjectively) wouldn't have figured out anyway. When they reveal this sort of thing before it actually happens, and have a build-up like this one is going to have, there are *going* to be complications. It just doesn't work any differently. I'm going to wait and see how this pans out, though.

Well i'm not close to Boston, but I have heard that the Sun is a fairly reliable newspaper. The information doesn't have to have appeared in the L.A. Times or New York Times to be true.
True. Without anyone telling us that there were going to be complications, we could have figured through common sense. The writers aren't exactly nice people when it comes to the life of their characters. I've never been big on Chandler and Monica, but I agree that it would definetely be very unfair if the season (series?) ended with them apart. I'm with Claire, let's picket!! (and if nothing else came out of it, we could at least get a good tour of the studio).
