802 "TOW the Red Sweater"

It's the day after the wedding, and everyone is checking out of their rooms. Unfortunately, Rachel has to complain that the hotel has charged her & Phoebe for food they did not eat, even a porn movie they did not watch - which turns out to be due to Joey sneaking into their room!

Meanwhile, Monica is scowling because she'll never be the bride again, and nothing Chandler can think of will cheer her up, until he reminds her of the photos they took with the hotel's complimentary disposable cameras - sadly, Chandler later discovers that his best man Ross has failed to take care of them.

Back home, Monica lays out all their wedding gifts, but since Chandler doesn't arrive, she opens the smallest one, to find a salt shaker. She ought to stop, so Phoebe suggests that she just opens the other small parcel - but Monica reckons the pepper pot is in the largest box!

Ross & Chandler search the hotel, but they can't find the cameras, so they decide to buy more from the gift shop, put their tuxes back on, and blend in with the next wedding. As they take photos, they annoy some of the guests; and when Ross poses on the stage, they call for a speech, so he announces that a car is about to be towed!

Amazingly, the bride looks a lot like Monica, she even has the same hair & dress, so Ross snaps Chandler kissing her and then they run off. After getting the prints, they return home, but Monica is not fooled since she had the disposable cameras all the time. As she starts to boil, Chandler notices that she's opened all their gifts, but before they can fight, he offers to call it quits, and she replies with a lovely "Okay"...

Rachel is about to break her news to the father when Phoebe warns her of what a shock that will be - so when Joey arrives, Rachel asks him how he'd react. He first fears that she's heard from an ex-girlfriend, then deduces that Rachel is pregnant, so Phoebe has to pretend that it's her. Being Phoebe, she goes too far with the lie, resulting in Joey going off to beat up some guy she dislikes at the gym!

Later on, Phoebe finds Rachel fretting in Central Perk, so she assumes that Gunther is the father; but her friend denies that, and reveals she daren't tell the father after all. Then when Phoebe returns home, Joey sits her down, takes her hand, makes a sweet speech, then kneels, and takes a ring-box out of his pocket! He proposes!! She accepts!!!

But as they kiss, Monica insists on telling Joey the truth - much to Phoebe's annoyance - so Joey reveals that a month before Rachel spent the night with some man who left his red sweater behind, which Phoebe recognises. After talking a reluctant Rachel into seeing the sweater's owner, they meet in Central Perk, and it's Tag!! Aaarghhh!!!!

Fortunately, while Rachel hesitates, Tag unzips his jacket, to reveal he's wearing his red sweater, so he's not the father. Holding her hand, he tells Rachel he's grown up since they split, and wants to get back together - but as soon as she reveals her little secret, he drops her hand; and when she tells him he can go, he runs a mile!

Rachel goes home to tell Monica & Joey that Tag is not the father - so Joey sits her down, takes her hand, makes exactly the same sweet speech, then kneels, and proposes! Phoebe is furious, refusing to hand over the ring, but it doesn't matter for Rachel gently turns him down, explaining that she's not looking for a husband.

But when Ross visits, he recognises the red sweater, for he mislaid it a month before, so as he departs the others realise he's the father!!!

In the tag scene, Ross bumps into Tag, and both guys are wearing their red sweaters. Tag starts to ask him about the baby, wondering whose it is, but the daddy-to-be just pulls at the tag of his sweater, to show him it's Italian, and the two men part, hopefully forever...

This was an entertaining episode for me, with lots of laughs, one good story, and a brilliant one. CCA did seem to have trouble in setting the right tone for Monica, but DS & MP were great as they ligged the strange wedding, stealing false memories. Okay, so the ending borrowed from the mix tape story in 617 "TOW Unagi", but never mind about that.

Meanwhile, LK & JA were on top form as we rode the highs & lows of what was literally a whodunnit, with a splendid fright when it seemed Tag had returned with a vengeance. Yet, just like previous outings for the trio, the two actresses inspired Matt LeBlanc to a terrific performance, from Joey's callow sneaking into everyone's rooms to watch porn, to his noble proposals of marriage - both of them!

Overall, good direction by David Schwimmer, (his sixth episode), but he failed to exercise a firm hand with with Courteney Cox Arquette, even if overall he did deliver the goods. But then he seems to think that Mental Geller is amusing. It will be interesting to see how strongly Jennifer Aniston takes the helm next March.

At the beginning of last season, Monica was shouting over the rooftops that she was engaged. So why on GGE isn't she running around, happily telling anyone that will listen that she is married?

Was Ross taking the complimentary bread, or thread?

Chandler objects to Ross handing out advice about marriage, but wasn't that most unfair? Okay, so he's had three weddings, but he's only had one marriage, and it was not his fault that Carol left him. Indeed, the couple must have tried so hard to save their marriage, for Ben was born about 8 months after his mother finally moved out - plus Ross & Carol have since remained on very good terms.

Who is Edsel (or Ansell) Adams? A 'famous' photographer?

In case anyone is claiming a continuity error that Chandler smiled for that photograph, don't forget that Joey taught Chandler how to do it, but the drugs that Chandler took to relax him made him dopy - something that MP might have learned from?

On the other hand, anyone claiming a continuity error about the wrapping paper on Monica's big wedding present has got a point...

Why was Chandler trying to take a close-up of a fork? Wouldn't the photo be out of focus? Was he going for an artistic shot between its prongs?

Why did Ross & Chandler run away? In Britain it is traditional to kiss the bride, so isn't it the same in America?

What does Phoebe call the salami thing? Bunny, or Buddy, or what?

Does the Monica who wildly opened all of her presents, making a huge mess with the wrapping papers, sound like the same Monica who hated to leave her shoes out on the carpet, and cross-referenced her photographs into dozens of categories?

Since Monica had her & Chandler's bags, where did he get a tuxedo from?

After criticising Monica a lot in this episode, at least when she saw the photo of Chandler kissing another woman, she didn't get screechy, she just got a bit mad, and in the end it was so delightful the way she happily let her anger go.

We hear that Rachel & Phoebe shared a room, plus of course Chandler & Monica, so it's likely that Ross & Joey did too. In any case, we can be certain that Joey had a room number to charge that tennis outfit to.

What are Mesuga nuts? Is that how you spell it? Is it a Jewish word?

"Doctor Do-Me-A-Little" was another for our collection of "Friends" porn titles. My favourite so far is "Inspect Her Gadget", what's yours?

Did you notice that we never saw inside Joey's apartment, presumably because it wasn't there?

When Phoebe said that she could identify the father from what appeared to be a stained item of clothing, did you think of Monica Lewinksy?

We've long been wondering when Phoebe would sing again at Central Perk, but sadly it seems that Terry has found someone else. Did you notice the blackboard now announces "Neighbour Tim"?

Phoebe informs Rachel that she may play the fool at times, but she's a little more than just a pretty blonde girl with an ass that won't quit. This proves what I've long said about her & Joey, that just because they act dumb sometimes does not mean that they're stupid.

Did you groan, and go "Oh no", when Tag turned up?

Or as a friend described it, a heart-stopping moment of utter terror, where she feared she would descend into a pit of despair, that required all fans to wear sackcloths & ashes in a desperate attempt to appease the gods into sending Tag away again?

Don't you just love the way Pheebs says "oh no" when things go wrong?

Are Phoebe & Joey still engaged, even though he later proposed to someone else, since she has got the ring?

Is anyone else disappointed that the residents of apartment #19 didn't get drunk on sangria, and have sex (drunk enough to do it but not so drunk that Joey should feel guilty about taking advantage of Rachel)?

Did *anyone* wish it had been Tag?

Have we ever seen Tag wear a red sweater before?

Did you think at first that the red sweater was dirty, or stained with sweat, until you saw the second one was the same? Are they meant to be like that? Is it the fabric?

According to the filming report (I don't know who wrote it) all of the Ross & Chandler scenes were filmed in advance, and the audience had to watch them on the big monitors. Presumably they were filmed while the reception set was still standing. Also, it was Matthew Perry's birthday so he had a cake, and everyone sang to him.

Scenes missing from the aired version include Chandler trying to sweeten a scowling Monica with some candy, which was mentioned again several times throughout the episode; instead of Phoebe saying that Gunther has weird hair, she says that he is pure evil; and when Rachel tells Joey that she's not looking for a husband, they hug again, and this time he does unhook her bra!

The report also describes how surprises are filmed - why does the studio audience gasp at something that we only see for the first time on our TV sets? While they watched the pre-filmed sequences, the grips set up for the big secret scene, putting the walls in front of the Central Perk set and lowering the curtain in front of the entire stage. This really built up the tension, so when the audience finally saw Tag, they were shocked.

I am not going to speculate on the possibility of Ross & Rachel getting back together again until I've seen the next episode, since we all know what this show is like...

Yes indeed, which is why in my review I described this story as literally being a whodunnit, for aside from an alternative meaning for the "dun", it bore a resemblance to the genre, with a 'victim', a list of suspects, amateur detectives, and clues to be found & interpreted. But it also has that fatal flaw where if events were not contrived, the story would never be able to happen. In many ways Monica is like my much older sister, whom I love, for she likes things clean & neat but her home is comfortable and easy to live in; she has had escalating battles with her husband & kids over phone pen tethers; and with 10-30 relatives as guests for Christmas she still attempts to keep track of whom each present came from, so she can spend January & February talking her children into writing thankyou letters (except we often end up in post-mortem attempting to match the folds & creases in shreds of wrapping paper to the presents themselves).

I do know people who behave like that, and some who would go further, and steal anything not welded in place. The question you must address is not that it is nonsense, but is it in character for Ross?

I have a very detailed filming report (unfortunately it does not say who wrote it, so I cannot give credit) that supplies a remarkably detailed & accurate account of what we saw on our television screens, so I am most inclined to trust the anonymous writer - and to quote my review once again, this is all that was cut...

Ah now, dear Claire, this is where we might or might not differ, for you seem to be arguing in both directions at once, and while I quite agree with Claire, I don't agree with her sister Erialc... :-)

The hell into which poor Ross descended in Season 5, and that he spent parts of Seasons 6 & 7 climbing out of & partially slipping back can be seen as divine (Kauffman & Crane) retribution for his appalling lack of trust that broke up the saintly couple in the third year, ruining what up to then was the best season so far. And then, as you know, I fully supported you that Rachel acted very badly at the start of Season 4 yet so far she has totally escaped her comeuppance. But we have anecdotal evidence that Mental Geller arrived at the instigation of Mr.Schwimmer himself, even if he was not his creation, to satisfy the actor's desire to play unsympathetic parts, of which Capt.Sobel in "Band of Brothers" is a prime example. I do sympathise with the pain this evidently still causes you, but I'm afraid it will simply not do to categorise another character's gentle treatment as a mistake.

You are on more solid ground with the thunder theft, but it seems to me that this is a question of proportion, timing, and severity. When Ross & Rachel kissed in the hallway, it involved half of her guests, then when Joey & Phoebe found out, 100% of her guests were focusing their attention away from her & Chandler. When Monica discovered that Rachel was pregnant, only two of her guests knew, *125* did not. The engagement party was upset while they were still getting ready - but Monica did not learn that Rachel was pregnant until after a year of preparation had passed, the rehearsal dinner and the ceremony itself were done, and (presumably) the wedding dinner was eaten and all the speeches had been made. Finally, a kiss in the hallway might well be significant in terms of a divorced couple trying for reconciliation, but it was still just a kiss, and cannot compare with the severity of the situation that Rachel faces as an unplanned single mother.

As for the photograph of the kiss, you must realise that this is where Monica differs from Ross - she *trusts* her beloved. That's not Ross's fault, as we learnt in 418 "TOW Rachel's New Dress"...

PHOEBE: Wow! Carol really messed you up! She turned you into this, this, this untrusting, crazy, jealous...

RACHEL: She's totally right! When we were together, you got all freaked out about Mark, and there was nothing going on.

MONICA: In high school, you weren't jealous at all, even though *all* your girlfriends were cheating on you!

PHOEBE: Alright, alright, so up until 92-93 he was very trusting, then '94 hit, Carol left him, and bam! Paranoid City!

..but Monica is still like the young Ross. When Chandler took Dana Keystone out in 618 "TOW Ross Dates a Student", on not one but two dates for Joey's benefit, Monica displayed merely a token jealousy, since she *knows* that Chandler is head-over-heels in love with her, and would never stray. When she saw the incriminating photograph, it was entirely in character for her to realise that he was trying to cover up the loss of the cameras - especially since the bride, her hair, and her wedding dress all closely resembled Monica.

Oh! Having promised me an analysis of logic flaws, you have concentrated on a guilty Monica letting a silly photo go, and said nothing about the main story. What did you think of The Clue Of The Title Garment???

And what of the other problems I raised doubts about in my review...

Yes, here we are back to complete agreement once more. :)

I dunno about your suspicion, maybe so, maybe not; but I too loved Joey's proposals, and the way the second subverted the sincerity of the first.

Ah - I'll answer those in reverse - Rachel's plans held a hole in *her* logic, not that of the show, these are fallible people; it was made very clear that the father was either Ross, Tag, or Joey (barring a weird twist) and since Joey was eliminated early on it was just a question of faith that an unpopular character would not be given recurring status, so it had to be Ross; and I agree with most of what you say about the direction, except for this, as I said in my review...

No, Ross had a breakdown because David wanted to try playing crazy because he was bored. *Ross* did not ruin that season; they knew going in that they wanted to break up that romance. Writer confusion as to what to do once the deed was done is what ruined that season. Ross' retribution for behaving jealously was losing Rachel. Anything else was grossly out of proportion.

Actually, the real issue is this; Ross was horribly written in season five and the writers overindulged their sadistic streak, to the detriment of the show. If my husband had kissed another bride on our wedding day, I think the argument would have lasted a few days.

The writers don't think that hard, Tennant. Monica didn't go ballistic because they needed the artistic focus on Jennifer. If the focus was supposed to be on Monica, be assured Monica would have had a fit.

I don't think so. AFAIA, his list of crimes is possession of narcotics with intent to trade; offering alcoholic liquor to a minor; possession of an illegal exotic animal; and open & gross lewdness on the It's A Small World ride, the NYU library, & the Museum of Prehistoric History.

That's the deeper reason, I'm examining the reasons within the story.

The whole of this storyline resembled the first part of 617. Chandler fretted as he failed to carry out a task, but he was let off the hook when he discovered that Monica had done something wrong. However, 617 continued with her making amends then discovering he had cheated her.

They would have been far more complex than that. You can cite everything from his Catholic heritage, hideous examples set by some of his sisters, his love for all five of his friends, his sweet & generous nature, his strong sense of virtue, and the fact that Phoebe & Rachel are both hot.

I know, it's not like women in general, and out of character for Monica in particular. I'm hoping that Schwimmer simply misjudged how CCA should play this, for she seems quite happy later on with her girls. Maybe the idea was to justify her opening the parcels, which cheered her up.

Ross says that all the soap & shampoos he's taking are built into the price of the room, so Chandler picks up an object about half as thick as a pack of cards, to tell Ross he doesn't need it - then asks what it is. Ross either says it is bread, or thread...

No, because the thrust of Chandler's objection was that Ross has had three marriages - but he hasn't, he's only had one.

Monica had *just* started to undo the bow, when Rachel came in, yet an instant later, Monica had the entire wrapping off the box - all you can see is plain brown cardboard, with the top flaps still taped down. Then when Monica says that Chandler still thinks Phoebe's pregnant, the bow and the pretty paper are back in place on the top. As Phoebe complains about Chandler, Monica is opening the bare brown flaps, yet as Monica reacts to Phoebe's remarks the box is pretty again. Joey's alarm at Rachel's hypothetical question turns the box plain brown again with such force, that it dare not change in his presence, but as soon as he goes the wrapping comes back, only to remember itself & vanish once more...

I was on a fancy-schmancy management training course in Basingstoke, don't laugh, and a colleague complained that there wasn't enough time to watch all the movies. As you can tell, he was new to living on the gravy train. Anyway, he was the kind of guy that if you suggested he could get past the traffic by driving on the pavement (USA sidewalk) he would do it, so I pointed out that since the TVs just had a lead going into the aerial socket, you could hook a VCR into the loop.

I didn't think he had taken the bait, but three weeks later we were back for Round 2, and he was lugging this really heavy suitcase...

I am, but it simply will not do for people to write her off as a bad actress. Bad actors act badly all the time, they know no better. CCA has proved on many occasions she can act well, including episodes of "Friends". It is true that she is at her best in an ensemble, but that reservation applies to all six main cast members. They can *all* act, and they can all act well, and if the armchair critics ever got up on stage (as I have) they would discover that acting is a hell of a lot harder than it appears on their TV screens. I'm not saying that CCA is the best of the bunch, for me that would be JA, but it would be stupid to claim that CCA is without great ability. When "Friends" began, she was the only famous face in the cast, and she is the *only* bankable movie star, since she has made hundreds of millions of dollars more profit than *all*five* of the other cast members added together.

In this episode, it seems to me that CCA's performance was at fault, but she is not to blame, for it is the responsibility of the director to elicit good performances from his cast, and this DS failed to do.

Monica was all over the place, and I bet CCA cringed when she saw it.

Mondler is a nickname for Chandler only, not Monica, and not the couple.

We don't see enough of them to know that, but Monica was very nice to Chandler in this episode - she scowled about her status, not at him; and she was very understanding about that photograph.

Maybe we should be glad that Monica didn't unwrap a really gorgeous Limoges gravy boat, and run away from home...

She sounds like she married the last guy on earth. No consideration to his feelings at all. Here's a question. What did she do to brighten up his day? 'I am just somebody's wife'. That somebody happens to be the love of her life. It bothers me that a day after the wedding, she's acting like a tired old wife. I guess I wanted to see a sweet moment between the two. I was disappointed but this season is obviously not one for cute C&M scenes.

Radisson is a five star chain of hotels. Its all over the world. They are in UK too. Surprised you haven't heard of them. Radisson SAS is part of the Radisson chain. Don't know what SAS stands for. I put that in cos thats is what is how its known here in Dubai.

Rachel mentioned the hotel let them stay longer than checkout time or an extended checkout time(can't remember). So Ross being the cheap guy he is got all excited and the idea of getting 'free' time in hotel probably turned him on more than Rachel did. Now do you understand why he 'Radisson'?? ;)

I was just watching the vegas episode recently and Monica just rips out her present to Chandler. So I guess it wouldn't be too out of character for her to rip open her presents instead of opening them neatly.

Quite recently, a law has been passed in the city of Sharjah (where I live) that women should wear 'decent' clothes. Meaning that one shouldn't expose above their knees and shouldn't wear sleeveless shirts. Strangely enough, the same goes for the men!! But this law is restricted only to this city. So when we want to go to the beach. We put on our beachwear and hop into the car and drive out 20km to Dubai where 'everything' is allowed. Anyway the whole thing isn't strictly enforced. But this country really is quite moderate and not very fundamentalist.

Exactly. One could argue that in this episode there were so many parcels that she wouldn't know whom they came from, but if you watch carefully, we don't see her rip parcel after parcel after parcel, since we go off to the other stories. In between she could have been making a list.

Where my sister lives in Southern England, the women sunbathe topless on the beach, but they must cover their breasts to go into the town. After an initial excitement, you get used to this quite quickly, but sometimes you see a girl in the town whom you saw earlier on the beach - and she's much sexier, because now the imagination comes into play.

They put a list of special posts which may be of interest to everyone. I don't what the first post to ATF was. I didn't sift thru each and every post. There's a search option in Google. I ran some searches to find your old reviews and others cos I wanted to know the general reaction to some scenes/episodes. So, I've read some random posts all the way back from 1995.

The only I can make out is that the time stamps on my posts (on google) are correct as long as you ignore the PST and change AM to PM. ie. 0330 PST post was actually posted at 1530 GMT+4hrs (local time here).

Chandler delaying the opening of the gift was so blah. I preferred Caroline in CITC drooling over how gorgeous the wrapping paper when Richard mentions 'oh you're one of those' and grabs the gift and rips it up for her. The look on her face was great.

If you watch the very similar situation in 114 "TOW the Candy Hearts", (or the repeat in 620 "TOW Mac and C.H.E.E.S.E.") as Joey takes Chandler on a blind date, and Joey's girlfriend Lorraine mentions that her friend is named Janice, you can see how Joey forgets to add on the usual delay, and consequently he reacts *much* faster than Chandler does.

He does the same thing in 606 "TOO the Last Night" where Monica demands to know why Ross can't help with Rachel's packing, so while Ross wonders what to say, Joey reacts very quickly, and quietly tells him to pretend that he has to mind Ben. Meanwhile, Chandler is being slow again, and finally chooses the wrong moment to say that Ben is at a dinner party.

It's very boring working in a film studio, you stand around all day.

Sort of - he isn't slow, he takes his time, which is very different, but he uses it as a defence mechanism just like Chandler uses humour.

If you check out 610 "TOW the Routine", you can see a normal Joey walk into the men's bathroom, and then he puts on his dumb look to throw off the guy who's trying to take Janine away from him.

Again when he's slow to realise that's it's the duck that has Chandler's ring. Also look at the "Joseph Staling" storyline and the encyclopedia storyline in a season 4 ep (can't remember which one). I'm not putting Joey down completely, but he isn't the fastest of thinkers and certainly doens' have the depth of knowledge that the other characters have. He isn't "dumb", just slow!

I don't know about in America, but in Britain medical technology has progressed. Repairing a hernia no longer counts as surgery, it's simply a procedure. The incision made under local anaesthetic is so small that it's no more than when giving blood, and the patient goes home after an hour or so. Last week, the news reported that a woman had a hole in her heart repaired, and she was back home the same day! We saw her happily doing strenuous housework, while before she'd been a complete invalid.

That's my reaction entirely - so much for theories about Nora & Gunther!

Sure thing. Buying disposable cameras can be cheaper than hiring a professional photographer. Plus you don't get a bunch of posed pictures. My best friend did that at her wedding. She bought a camera for each table and I think a few extra. And whenever someone saw something that they thought would like nice as a picture they took a picture. Of course.. I don't think the idea was really worked out well. Some people hogged the camera and only took what they wanted. There were no pictures of the people who were in the wedding except the bride and groom. I had to force someone to take a picture of me and my friend.. I was the maid of honor. And at Monica and Chandlers wedding the professiobal was getting pictures of everyone in the weddiing. So there are pros and cons. I wanted more pictures of me(And I hate having my picture taken lol) b/c I was in a dress which I never wear and my bf forget his(damn him!) .

A correction which needs to be noted here. Ross did not "stupidly fail" to take care of anything. Chandler forgot to tell him what needed to be done. He began to tell him, then ended up telling a joke instead, and the point of their conversation got lost. Chandler never told Ross to do anything about those cameras. That was actually part of the joke; Chandler screwed up. This is only a stupid failure on Ross' part if he is expected to be a mind reader. Look at your video again.

I think the next post covered it pretty well. Leno asked if MP was a "little Speedo guy" and MP got mock-offended, saying that no, he wore regular length trunks. He also mentioned that going down those really tall water slides was sort of like getting a public enema, though!

Whenever anyone mentions Speedos, I immediately think of my honeymoon in Tahiti, where numerous portly European gentlemen (French and Italian, mostly) wore them, but they were obscured by their overhanging beer bellies. Yuck! But real swimmers can look good in them.

Monica has *just* started to undo the bow, when Rachel comes in, yet an instant later, Monica has the entire wrapping off the box - all you can see is plain brown cardboard, with the top flaps still taped down. Then when Monica says that Chandler still thinks Phoebe's pregnant, the bow and the pretty paper are back in place on the top. As Phoebe complains about Chandler, Monica is opening the bare brown flaps, yet as Monica reacts to Phoebe's remarks the box is pretty again. When Phoebe makes amends the box is bare, then it stays wrapped for *ages* until Pheebs says a second BAMM which makes the wrapping vanish until Joey comes in and the box is wrapped up again. Joey's alarm at Rachel's hypothetical question turns the box plain brown again with such force, that it dare not change in his presence, but as soon as he goes the wrapping comes back, only to remember itself and vanish once more...

I know. Apparently he told a tale on Rosie O'Donnell several years ago about actually losing his trunks in a wave, then realizing that he was directly within eyesight of patrons of an oceanfront restaurant.

Oh, it's a brand name for short, tight swim trunks, the kind you see Olympic swimmers wear (though now they all seem to wear the body suits). They were very popular in the 70's here in the US for general swimwear. They tend to fit like a tight pair of underwear, though, leaving nothing to the imagination.

I think he recycles some stuff in slightly different form, and takes stories with a small grain of truth and elaborates on them. But at least he's usually interesting. I saw Rosie have to drag MLB through an interview by talking about mail order catalogs. Very boring.
