TOW the Joke

Slightly better than last week, though somewhat farcical in places.

Back to the usual 3 storylines this week.

Firstly, the Joke.

Ross gets a joke published in Playboy, but Chandler claims he invented it. This leads to considerable argument, dragging the others in too.

Chandler continues to brood over this joke to Monica, but she has her own obsession to deal with.

Finally, they ask Monica to arbitrate over whose joke it is, and they each explain how they invented it, trying to coerce her into picking them - Chandler even (light-heartedly) saying 'I'm your only chance of having a baby'.

They don't like what Monica tells them though - that the joke sucks & is offensive. They then both DENY inventing it!

Second story - Joey's money problems.

Chandler wants to watch a cable show on Joey's TV, but he hasn't been able to pay his bills, and both that and is phone have been cut off. Joey is too proud to take a loan from Chandler though.

Later, Gunther offers Joey a job in Central Perk, which he is reluctant to take, and then tries to conceal from the gang.

On his second day, he gets an audition, but cannot attend it, since Gunther won't cover for him. Joey is determined to go though, and closes CP for the duration.

This gets him fired, AND he also fails the audition, but Rachel (unwitting) uses Gunther's crush on her to get Joey his job back.

The final storyline was the girl's weird dating question.

The girls are reading Ross's Playboy and Monica asks Rachel & Phoebe if they HAD to pick one of the others to date, which would it be?

Rachel wisely refuses to answer, but Phoebe says it would be Rachel, causing Monica to obsess about why!

Later on, in bed, C&M are brooding about their respective problems, completely unaware of the others obsessions.

The next day, Monica challenges Phoebe as to why she'd prefer Rachel to her. She reluctantly admits that she thinks Monica would be 'high maintenance', and that Rachel is more easy-going. This gets twisted into Rachel thinking that Phoebe means she is a pushover, so she storms out.

When they come back, they accuse Phoebe of being flaky, which, to their surprise, she readily admits.

Later on, in CP, Monica gets Chandler to try and persuade them she is not high-maintenance, but his speech has clearly been written by Monica, and Rachel calls his bluff. He then upsets Monica by telling her she IS a little high-maintenance, but quickly makes up for it for telling her that is one of the things he loves about her.

In the epilogue, the guys are asked the 'who would you date' question, which R&J avoid, but C says Joey, presumably opening up a new can of worms!

Comments :

ISTM that the Geller obsessive trait is being overplayed in recent episodes.

Unlike most of the previous seasons, there seems no underlying theme to the show, leaving it somewhat adrift and short on strong stories.

Hellooooo!!! After getting drunk in Vegas, Paul Hyett doodled cat whiskers on his/her face and miaowed this little lot at a statue...

And Paul finally hits on the whole theme of S6! :)

The next three episodes are great, IMHO - if nothing else, watch the next two episodes to see how a celebrity guest spot *should* be done.

This should put to rest all those who say Chandler would freak at a baby.

This isn't true: although they start off talking about their own problems, they then include each other as well.

You are entitled to seem to you what you please Paul, but ISTM that Ross was no worse than Chandler, and Monica no worse than Rachel.

But there was! Split into groups of 1/2/3, Joey had a problem, Chandler & Ross had a problem, and the women had a problem. They were all stuck until each was helped out by someone from one of the other groups.

It was interesting that Rachel complained about being a pushover, when actually she always gets her own way - except with Phoebe who dominates everybody. This suggests a pecking order as follows...

          Joey
          Ross

..except that Ross is the only one who can tell Phoebe what to do sometimes, so maybe the names should be in a circle...

He was sweet, but Chandler has done this sort of thing before - confronted Monica's objections & turned them around at her, rather than denying her.

Oh yes - at least the *real* Joey does, not "Slow Joey": you only have to look at the way Ross either goes running to Joey for advice; or he regrets failing to do so after he's come badly unstuck, eg the start of 316.

It *did* show that Chandler knows how to push Monica's buttons, but he did so in a happy & relaxed manner, which showed that Chandler was not afraid of the prospect himself. I hasten to add that Chandler was *so* off-guard, that he showed no consideration for her feelings by implying that he was her last option; but fortunately Monica is not Rachel...

I've enjoyed 6 out of the 12 episodes so far this season.

My scores for S1-5 were 14/18/15/14/13 so S6 isn't doing *too* badly.

The reason I said that is that the four Janine episodes brought the show down, if these are ignored then my score for S6 so far becomes 6 out of 8.

The reason I said FOUR Janine episodes is that she was virtually written out of 609, she just had a walk-on part lasting 43 seconds.

It would be nice to see Janice again: the last time we saw her, she dumped Ross for being too whiney, (wotta gal); then told Joey that her score was now two out of three - so there's a new story for you... :)

This suggests a pecking order as follows...

I think it's more complicated than that. Ross falls over at anything Rachel says. He will stand up, at times, to each of the others depending on the situation. I do not think either of the men really dominate him consistently. He tends to lose his fights with Phoebe, and he does give into Monica *when she's in anal-freak mode.*

The men actually give and take pretty well. I can think of a couple of times that Chandler, who supposedly dominates Joey, had to grovel in apology. Monica dominates Chandler,and sometimes Rachel. Rachel and Monica tend to trade off.

Ross only gets anywhere when the others have already backed themselves into a corner and know in their own hearts that they're in the wrong. This especially applies when Phoebe is in the wrong, and all the others are right, so Rachel/Monica/Chandler/Joey make Ross confront her.

Actually Chandler nearly always loses arguments to Joey, but Chandler behaves like Joey's parent, so I put them that way round.

Monica comes across as dominating Rachel, until you look at who nearly always gets her own way by being a little princess. Rachel shared that apartment for 5 years and got Monica to do all the housework. How long did Chandler live there before he put an apron on?

Psychological distress over his ailing career? Debate...

So is Claire visiting or what? Is this something to do with your recent problems?

Yep. Phoebe is the exact opposite - they would dovetail beautifully...

My guess is sommat to do with a monkey, and the monkey being a doctor and being unable to right prescriptions, and apparantly it's offensive to women too :)

Sounds like another v silly joke that someone (circa 1978 so I don't remember who) turned into an operatic aria.... 2 parrots in a tree, and the owner asks a passing man to climb up and retrieve them because they won't come down. He climbs up and brings down the red parrot, but leaves the other one up there. "Why didn't you bring down the green parrot as well?" asks the owner. The man replies "Because it wasn't ripe yet."

I can still remember the tune of the bloody song as well (it was on Radio 4 but I was very very young and have no idea how to trace what it was)

For any still doubting that Joey is not as dumb as he pretends to be, he turns out to be a good waiter - prompt, courteous, gets the orders correct, and has no trouble calculating the bill. He did have some experience at Allesandro's, but Rachel was never that good after years at Central Park.

We are now half-way through Season 6, yet every clip in the opening titles still comes from Season 5.

Phoebe had some lovely visual jokes with the contents of her bag, including a live goldfish & a running shoe with an egg inside; then counting everyone to check all six really were present when Jill knocked on the door.

Reese Witherspoon did a good job as Rachel's sister. She was 24 when this episode was made, making Jill two years younger than Rachel was when she began, and we saw the same type of shopping spree:

"I don't need a job, I don't need my parents, I've got great boots" boots "Please hire me" sweater & "don't you want to rent me this apartment" pants

Jill also bought a pashmina, which caught out great know-it-all Ross (it's a long shawl woven from the fine underfleece of goats from Northern India).

Gunther fans should note that he had a larger part in this episode than Janine did in 609 "TOW Ross Got High".

The C&M story was pretty gross (though sex needn't involve the respiratory tract) but it was saved by Monica's topless scene, and depending on how much you are turned on by finding new places for vapour rub...

Phoebe fans looking for signs of new romance will have noticed that Joey offered her a free scone as she was so pretty, (she does look *hot* in this episode) - but Phoebe was jealous of Ross & Jill and sat between them.

Rachel was typically jealous, declaring to her sister that Ross was not a geek, but handsome, smart, kind, and a good kisser. But when she rushed to the window to spy on them, where had the big white porcelain dog gone? It wasn't on Monica's balcony!

Finally, the UK version had no tag, was this true of the US version? And the credits included Lex Arquette as a customer, yet another sibling of David?

That's a valid interpretation, but I think it's going too far to refer to a taboo. According to my mother, (who was one of several sisters), my father & most of my uncles were brought home by one girl but ended up with another.

As the song goes (IIRC)... "So tell me, pretty lady, are there any more at home like you?"

..that's the nearest I can see to any clearance with Rachel, but in fact Ross never explicitly asks her permission, he's not even listening to her, he just makes assumptions about her feelings.

And Rachel doesn't throw any orders at Ross for him to obey.

BTW, while checking this out, I noticed that there was a cute R&P moment (just before Gunther tells Joey he owes $8) with Ross & Phoebe sitting up one end of the sofa - she is listening intently as he explains something about his hand, possibly being sceptical about palmistry.

I'm not saying it means anything Claire - just that it was cute ! :)

It's something I would never do in a million years and I think Ross should have politely turned down Jill's invitation. But this is sitcom world so that doesn't happen, which is fine. It's clear from this R&R exchange that Ross was going to turn down Jill's advance until he was told that Rachel had proposed the idea(I'm assuming Jill stretched the truth a little about Rachel's encouragement of the idea). So Ross goes ahead with the date because he believes he's got Rachel's OK. Ross didn't ask for permission because he thinks he's already been given the go-ahead from Rachel.

I still don't think he should have accepted the date, but obviously he didn't feel he had reason not to.

Have you seen the second half. She most certainly does, and he marches like a soldier.

That's 614, Claire, and not until next Thurs. So no, we haven't seen it (but I believe you)

Have you seen the episode that follows? I'm afraid I cannot continue to support my feelings on the subject until I'm sure you are up to speed.

Because the flirting made her feel awkward. Watching somebody else flirt makes a lot of people feel awkward. Tennant, I'm sorry, but I think you are trying to see something that really, really, *really* isn't there at all and isn't ever going to happen. It's back to what Larissa said about the ten points she learned from MNL. There is often absolutely, positively nothing whatsoever beneath the surface. Now, I can't say that makes for Emmy caliber writing, but it seems to be what we have to work with.

SECOND of all, you & Larissa have a point that's hard for me to argue against: this is where it would be really great if 613's scriptwriters Sherry Bilsing, Ellen Plummer or Seth Kurland were contributing to our little discussion; but we don't even have MNL any more. :-(

THIRD of all, since they are not, then we have no alternative but to stick a pin in that line of argument, and jump up 21 lines to say...

I think these titles are the worst ever. Since when did friends use titles to refer to anything other than the individual actors. You never saw 3 clips of R+R together in season 2/3's titles, but these now permenantly short titles seem to be all about C+M.

The Season 6 titles are shorter as the episodes are now 21 minutes to provide time for more adverts in America. They have cut out the first four group shots & another from the central section.

307 has R+R and R+P shots, 613 has an R+R, a J+M, and two C+M shots.

Not quite as biased as you made out Tom, but you were partially right. However, it's unlikely that the compilers sat down to follow some sort of quota, they just put some funny shots tougher. What worried me was that the 613 compilers still found their material in S5 - but all the shots in 307 that I recognised came from S2, so maybe it's not so bad after all.

Uh-uh. As I learned on here - but you could figure it out - the credits change about halfway through the season, once they have enough new material. When they filmed the credits sequence for the beginning of S3 they had no S3 clips to go with, only S1&2, for obvious reasons. By 313 the credits should be from S3. With 613, they should have changed the sequence by now. So 307 isn't really a fair comparison, 313 would be.

Either way, it's still not a continuity glitch. It is not impossible for Chandler to have forgotten about the first screw-up when he dated the "2nd" sister, and it is certainly not beyond Joey to have forgotten about it at the time, besides which I don't see why Joey has to refer to the first one, his reaction at the time was harsh enough as it was - yet another example of Joey being an absolute jerk in my opinion.
