I am figuring someone on this group has figured this out....who among the group has had sex with the most folks since the show started? Who has had the least?
My guess for most would be Rachel: Barry, Paulo, Chandler's friend from work (He will so get the wrong idea!), Ross, Tad, etc (and that is not even thinking!!) Joey might give her a run for her money, though.
My guess for the least would be, of course, Chandler!
No, I think Joey is has the most. He sleeps with just about everybody.
I think Ross has the least. Carol, Rachel, Emily, the girl from the copy place... I'm sure he's had others, but I can't remember right off the top of my head.
Ross also had the cleaning lady in college - even though this could be a mistake as when he went out with Rachel he said that he only slept with one other woman and that was Carol!

I would agree with Rachel being the most "active" with the men in the show. The least I would say is Chandler, besides Monica how much has he gotten from other women?
I don't see any way of knowing how many Joey has slept with. I get the impression he sleeps with several women each month, even if we never see them. For example, we know Chandler makes breakfast for Joey's girls, but we've never really seen that happen.

Chandler's friend from work was named Patrick, but we can't count him since he was never seen, and we don't know what happened anyway.
Also Rachel's assistant was named Tag, not Tad.
Yes, he's in first place, but only just.
Nope, Chandler is in second place - and when you consider that he has been in a monogamous relationship for almost half of the show, he did better than Joey...

This is an old debate. The consensus of opinion on ATF was that they had sex well before that, but Chandler kept his undershirt on, (as does Ross in bed with Rachel in the same episode). We can't be 100% positive that they had sex, but since he saw Ginger without her wooden leg on, it's hard to imagine what else they could have been doing.

I saw the ceremony live on Pro Sieben - didn't he look dapper as he collected his Oscar? But Ridley Scott seemed very disappointed to be passed over, even though "Gladiator" won Best Picture.

Yeah, I stayed up watching the Oscars live as well. (The Americans don't know how lucky they are to be able to watch it at a reasonable time and not at 3.a.m.) I was rooting for Russell Crowe, so I thought it was great that he won. Tom Hanks is always brilliant, but Cast Away was nowhere near as good as Gladiator. And it was about time that someone a bit unconventional like Crowe won the prize. I'm not surprised that Ridley Scott didn't get the Oscar, though. The Academy obviously wanted to honour Steven Soderbergh (and with two nominations under his belt, I have to say that the bloke deserved it), even though Ang Lee was a strong contender as well. Making a movie about such an important and serious issue as drugs, Soderbergh made a serious impression that not even Russell Crowe in a skirt could win over. I also found that for the first time ever the longest acceptance speech was by far the best. Julia looked absolutely radiant, and I actually believed her joy. Besides, I'm sure Julia doesn't need another TV when she gets $20 mill. per movie. :)
Yes, they ought to do the show on Sunday afternoons.
Yes, but Crowe is a real movie hero that both sexes can appreciate.
Well, I don't approve of this "farming them out" system, the awards should all be done on merit, and IMHO it was principally the direction that made "Gladiator" so great.

Oh, I know that, it's just that he's the "bad guy" who "broke Meg Ryan's heart after destroying her marriage", while everybody adores Tom Hanks.
I haven't seen Traffic, so I don't think I should judge either of them. :)
I heard that it was the guy who won for best animated feature ("Fathers & Daughters"). His acceptance speech was just 15 seconds long.

Well, I can, but it wouldn't be fair to Traffic since I don't know how good that movie is. However, the Academy probably wanted to honour Soderbergh since he's made so many critically acclaimed movies, while Scott has been rather unfortunate and now has e.g. G.I. Jane on his resume. :( I wouldn't worry, though. He'll get an Oscar some day.
I think she was great too, but we say this after the fact; we might have thought differently if a man had been cast. Or what if Quentin Tarantino had cast a woman as Vanessa Vega in "Pulp Fiction", instead of taking a chance on John Travolta, who was something of a has-been at the time?

Who do you think could have replaced Travolta? If a woman were to fill his shoes, this flick would certainly have become something different. (I'm not saying that that's a bad thing, though. OTOH, I find it interesting.) Susan Sarandon could pull it off. Or what if Uma Thurman and John Travolta changed places? Uma taking care of her boss's boyfriend?
Do you get annoyed when people talk about how virtuous they are just because they got up early in the morning, yet you were up even earlier, just from the other end?
Funnily enough, I've always imagined it would Linda Fiorentino, not least because the movie posters would rhyme... ;)
Rachel: Oh, between you telling him that I wanted to have a fling and me putting out on the first date-oh, he's so gonna get the wrong idea.
Yes, but you don't seem to be counting all the anonymous people that Joey has sex with (e.g. in TOW the Cop, Joey has sex with two unnamed women)
The stripper in TOW The Worst Best Man Ever Possibly Lori, the casting lady?
I think that we have less evidence that Chandler had sex with Nina and Ginger than we do that Rachel had sex with Patrick. Chandler only says that he is dating Nina while Ginger runs away from him as soon as she finds out that he has a third nipple. I also don't think that he had sex with Susie Moss (it would completely defeat her purpose). We see them making out on the couch and she tells him that she has to go because she has a reservation. He tries to talk her into staying for something that will only take 2 or 3 minutes and she seems unimpressed with the thought of 200 seconds of passion. She then talks him into wearing her underwear.
The guy who keeps pigeons on the roof?
I would add Patrick here based on the original question.
Tell me that in America the expression "putting out" means sexual intercourse Laura, and I will accept that. However, although we saw a number of the competing candidates, Patrick was not one of them.
We never saw them, though. We can't go by locker-room gossip.
Ah yes, she *should* be in, thanks. That takes Joey up to 12.
Mere hearsay, we never saw her.
This list should include Mary-Angela Tribbiani, taking him up to 11.
I agree, the difference is that Patrick was never seen on the show, but Nina & Ginger were.
Well, without going into huge detail about this, when we debated all the possible sexual partners of Seasons 1-6, the consensus was that they did.
We never saw him.
We never saw him.
If we try to add people we've heard about, we end up with an extremely biased sample depending on who was discussed, and who wasn't, in the few seconds per day that we've seen of these six people's lives.
I'm not Laura, but I can answer this. Yes, the term 'putting out' means actual sex. Over here in America anyway. :)
I've been wondering this for while. Were they ever clear that they *did* have sex? As far as I can remember, they 'fooled around'. Which doesn't mean sexual intercourse. It *can*.. but not certain. :)
Well, I am Laura and I agree with Jaime. According to the Merriam-Webster on-line dictionary, it isn't even considered slang to use that definition of the phrase "put out":
put out (intransitive sense): (3) to engage in sexual intercourse
Ginger,
have
Again, I agree. We were never told that they had sex. Chandler woke up in a closet with her and thought he remembered kissing her (but that was actually Monica). He probably did at least kiss her because she told her sisters that he had soft lips.
I doubt that she put Andrew out for the milkman..... ;-)
Nope, (1) was to set out from the shore and (2) is to make an effort. I believe that your "putting out a note for the milk man" is using the phrase in the transitive sense (there are 6 definitions given by Webster for the transistive sense).
In the context which Rachel used it, I'm pretty sure that she had sex with Andrew.
Chandler doesn't even fully remember what he did that night (he drank his apartment) and Joey's family has a tendency to over-react (his sister shot her husband). Mary-Angela seems to have only told Joey that Chandler groped her.
I still think this one is debatable. If the subject is brought up in the show again and it turns out that he did not have sex with her, I certainly wouldn't consider it a continuity error or a re-writing of history.
Don't ask me where I got Andrew from...of course I meant Patrick.
Again, Patrick.
I would say yes based on the evidence. If they were to try to turn that one around and say that he and Chloe did not have sex, they would have a lot of explaining to do.
We have to look at the preponderance of the evidence. In the case of
Ross having sex with Chloe, we have the following evidence:
1) Ross was very upset about a break up with his life-time
dream girl who he suspected was being surreptiously wooed
by an (ex)co-worker. Said co-worker is in the apartment with
her when he calls.
2) Ross wakes up the next morning with a woman (Chloe) who
we have been told is into casual sex. Her clothing/shoes are
scattered around the house and Ross is keen for Rachel not to
know that she is there (he also seems emberassed by his actions).
3) His two best friends, Chandler and Joey, think that he should
keep whatever he did secret until his deathbed.
4) Isaac, Chloe's friend, when asked to keep his knowledge
about what happened a secret says "doesn't matter how
much we love 'em, monogamy is too cruel a rule"
5) Isaac's friend Jasmine who doesn't even really know Ross
is annoyed with him and says "You did a bad thing!" when
he introduces himself.
6) Rachel is very angry when she finds out. "A mistake?! What
were you trying to put it in? Her purse?!", "Ross, you had sex
with another woman!"
7) Chandler says "He has sex, and we get hit in our heads" "
"Yeah, never cheat on Rachel."
8) "Okay! All right! How was she?" "She, she was different."
9) Rachel asks how Ross would react if she had had sex with
her (ex)co-worker and he does not complain that that is not
a fair comparison.
10) In later episodes, Rachel keeps refering to Ross as a cheater
(once a cheater always a cheater...okay she is quoting her
Mom there) while the others say things like "You slept with
somebody three hours after you thought you broke up. I mean
bullets have left guns slower!"
There is no reason for Ross to lie about what happened that night.
He has nothing to gain from telling Rachel that he had sex with
another woman because he really does want to stay with Rachel.
Therfore, it would be very difficult to believe that Chloe and he
did not have sex (the only way to be more sure would be to
show them having sex and that is not going to happen on American
commercial television in an 8 pm timeslot)
Okay, now lets look at the case of Chandler and Mary-Angela
having sex:
1) Chandler was upset about a break-up and got very, very
drunk (this plays against the sex thing especially now that
we know that Chandler was not drunk that night in London
so he is not necessarily an exception to the rule).
2) Chandler woke up in a closet with Mary-Angela (which is
not necessarily an impediment for him as we know from
TOW Phoebe Hatest PBS ;-). Chandler mentions only
remembering that he kissed a girl in a red skirt (which
was actually Monica)
3) Chandler doesn't want Joey to find out (not necessarily
an indication that he had sex because look how upset he
himself was when he found out that Ross had kissed his
mother. Joey is protective of his family).
4) Joey says that Chandler fooled around with his sister and
asks him "Or are you just gettin' over Janice by groping my
sister".
5) Mary-Angela told her sisters that Chandler had soft lips.
6) Many episodes later, Joey says that Chandler made-out
with his sister. Made-out can mean having sex, but it
more typically is meant to refer to necking/groping.
So, nobody actually says that the two had sex and it would seem
difficult (though not impossible) for them to have done it considering
Chandler's level of intoxication. I simply don't think that there is
enough evidence to state categorically that the two had sex. If
a later episode provides a bit more evidence either way, I could
easily believe that they did or did not have sex. I would have no
trouble arguing with people who might claim that the new evidence
constitutes a continuity error.
I certainly think that there is more evidence that Rachel had sex with the un-seen Patrick (two characters agree he exists, Rachel used easily understood common American vernacular to say what happened, and she had no reason to lie (in fact, telling the truth made her look bad)) than that Chandler had sex with Mary-Angela (and don't even get me started on Ginger).
Grin. Have you been daydreaming about an Andrew lately?
I'm only teasing you about Chloe since we don't know for certain sure, even though I too reckon that they probably did have sex - but what if Ross doesn't remember what happened since he was too drunk, and Chloe either lied or Isaac misunderstood her?
Well, the red skirt thing was Chandler confusing Monica & Veronica.
When Chandler admits that he'd fooled around with Joey's sister, Phoebe gasps, so that means it was a lot more than just a grope.
Ross's reaction was to tell Rachel that this is what men do, don't tell him men are nice; this being after Ross had insisted to Rachel at the party that Mark was only being nice to her to have sex with her.
Monica asked Chandler if he was insane, because Joey was going to kill him, he was actually going to kill him dead; hardly a grope reaction.
Chandler was planning to run away to Cuba to escape Joey's wrath which also shows it was a helluva lot more than a grope.
Chandler started talking about not being ready for a *commitment*.
As for saying that Joey is protective of his family because he got upset when he found out that Ross had kissed Chandler's mother, what Joey in fact said was that you never kiss your friend's mom, but maybe a hot-lookin' aunt, and sisters are okay...
You've already convinced me about Andrew, err I mean Patrick, but he still doesn't make the list since he was never seen.
Nope. I did read a book about a week ago in which one of the children was named Andrew....maybe I got Drew and Patrick confused (Drew was one of the first co-workers Chandler asks to date Rachel).
You know, I just watched that episode last night, and Ross REMEMBERS what he did that night. It is possible that Isaac misunderstood, but Ross admitting to what he did makes it much harder to convincingly change the perceptions this episode left viewers with.
Nothing is written in stone and the writers can wriggle out of most anything that has happened in the show. They only have to worry about losing credibility. When Dallas erased a year of the show by claiming it was all a dream, they were free to do so, but angered many of their fans. What they did was cheap, but it was the only way they could think of to change what was shown and bring back a character.
If it turns out that Ross and Chloe did not have sex that night, the writers had better come up with VERY convincing reasons to explain away this evidence or I think that a lot of the shows fans would be bitterly disappointed at being jerked around.
On the other hand, I would hazzard to suggest that if it turns out that Chandler had a relatively "monkish" existence and never had sex with Nina, Mary-Angela, Ginger or Susie Moss (I still get that one), must people would probably shrug and say, "Well, we were never fully convinced that he had had sex with them anyway".
I said that!
What does Phoebe know? He said that he fooled around with Joey's sister and she chooses to gasp. She doesn't really know anything more about what happened than we know from his statement.
Again, Ross doesn't know anything more than we know from this statement and was choosing to use Chandler's actions to bludgeon Rachel about Mark. Guys going around groping people they can't even recognize the next day shows how primal they can be (in Ross's opinion....don't flame me ;-)
Again, what does Monica know about what happened and what do we know about what she knows about Joey's reactions? Maybe she knows that Joey will kill anybody that gropes his sister.
Chandler doesn't even seem to know what happened. But again, he may just know that Joey tends to overreact to such situations.
That's only after Joey confronts him about how this had better be a long term thing instead of just a grope session.
No, I meant how Chandler reacted to Ross kissing his mother. He was very angry at Ross. Perhaps he thought Joey would be as upset about him kissing one of his (Joey's) sisters.
Okay, he doesn't make your list, but he might make the list of the person who started the thread because they just wanted to know how many people each character had had sex with, not how many paramours we have seen on screen.
That was the guy who was The Man From Atlantis, wasn't it?
How did his Dallas character die?
I was just trying to make the point that the most important casual encounter can never be known for sure since we never saw them having sex. Obvious I know, but nobody doubts that Joey ate Rachel's trifle.
What I want to know is why you lot won't give Chandler the benefit of the doubt. Joey is assumed to screw every woman he meets; Rachel will have to be buried in Y-shaped coffin: but despite Chandler's charm & wit, his ability to flirt, the ease with which he bedded Aurora, Jade, Janice, Joanna & Marjorie, and the fact that he stole Kathy away from Joey no less, unless we actually see him on the job then a relatively "monkish" existence is invoked, and any pinprick of doubt is exulted.
Phoebe is reacting to the phrase "fooled around with" in the same way that I am, and in disagreement with you. More than that, Phoebe shows the way that the writers intend this news to be taken.
Even so, Ross equates fooling around with having sex.
Again, Monica knows as much as you do, probably more, and her strong reaction is clearly intended to show that Chandler had sex with Joey's sister. It's not as though Joey believes that he attacked her.
Come on Laura, the whole tenor of the situation is that it was sex.
Joey talked about Chandler groping his sister, he didn't say that he had just groped his sister. Anyway that was when Chandler agreed that he *could* really fall for her, not that he *had* fallen for her, and he didn't mention commitment until she who he thought was Mary Angela tried to seduce him in her grandma's house! If Mary Therese, or any other of her six sisters, normally behave like that, there must be an awful lot of murders on Joey's conscience by now, unless there is a well-populated bar in Havana called Never Touch A Tribbiani Girl.
Even so, Joey said that it was okay to kiss a sister.
That's fair enough Laura, but with all reservations turned off, the only honest & accurate answer we can give Smyrna is "we don't know".
Um....I didn't watch the show, but I seem to recall hearing that he died in a fiery car crash which was shown on screen (and witnessed by others on the show?). In any event, he had one of those rare soap opera deaths that left no doubt that he was dead (apparently, soaps normally prefer to keep their options open).
Yes, but there are some encounters that have more proof than others. It is beyond a reasonable doubt that Ross and Chloe had sex. The same is true of Monica and Richard or Ross and Rachel. For the writers to go back on those stories is still possible, but they would have to have a pretty good story to explain it away. We've seen these people before/after sex and they claim to have done it and it is unlikely (given the context) that those claims would be lies.
There are other relationships for which the preponderance of the evidence indicates that sex was involved. Examples of these would be Patrick and Rachel or Joey and Lauren. We are told these people have had sex and again, there doesn't seem to be a reason for them to lie (in some cases, it is in their detriment to tell the truth, but they do it anyway). Other examples would include Chandler and Mary-Angela or Rachel and Joshua (did they ever mention that the those last two had sex? Rachel certainly intended the night when she "cooked" dinner for him, but those plans were foiled). These relationships could be negated by the writers with a bit of simple hand waving, but given no further evidence, they are more likely to have occured than not to have occured.
Finally, there are some sexual relationships which are highly debatable. These include Ross and the girl in the Library, Chandler and Ginger, and Chandler and Susie. There are some hints that something might have happened, but these are either not sufficient evidence or it is highly circumstantial. They could have happened, but I don't think the writers would have to even offer an explanation if it turns out that these couples did not have sex. No hand waving would be necessary. Ross and the girl could simply have not had time to get that far. Chandler was just being neurotic about the leg and Susie was just playing the revenging Fury part.
Well, the reason that I'm debating the life out of Chandler relationships is because there happens to be two on his list which are highly debatable (in my opinion). Not only that, but I think that if Chandler did have sex with Ginger and/or Susie, both those plots are less funny than if he did not. I fail to even see the point of the Ginger story if he had sex with her. He is at war with himself. Will his desire for this woman overcome his neurosis? When he finally opts to grow up and beat one of his many neurotic problems, it turns out that she is grossed out by his physical anomaly. Also, in the Ginger plot, one has to do hand waving to explain away why she didn't notice his physical anomaly sooner if the did have sex.
Besides, Chandler is meant to be the loveable loser who isn't as successful with the woman. Joey is meant to be a modern meant to be the opposite. While Chandler trips and falls all over himself when he sees a pretty girl, Joey can stop mid-argument to wonder over and smooth talk a girl. Also, many of the story lines are based on how Chandler is not as successful as Joey (and he is in a position to know that).
<snip the Chandler-Mary Angela debate where Tennant argues that Chandler's friends reactions to revelations tell us what his friends interpret his words to mean based on their superior knowledge of how these phrases are typically used by the group> Yep. That is all very true. And that is excellent evidence that they did have sex (but does not prove it beyond a reasonable doubt)
LOL! Well, it is worse when a friend does it. Joey's sisters appear to be much like him. If they are and he does react violently when guys have sex with your sister, there probably are a lot of guys on the run...
Okay, can we add that well-populated bar to your TWWS list?
Not really. It is up to Smyrna to decide on her own criteria. We on the group can merely make suggestions. I think that one of my posts on this subject went astray, but in it I did argue that there really can be no definitive list on this subject. Any list is bound to contain biases because people will weigh the evidence differently and have different criteria.
Smyrna asked a question of the group which is essentially an invite to people to post their opinions and ideas. People have offered lists of paramours and many have debated whether certain couples did or did not become sexual. That's what the group is for.
If somebody expects a definitive list/number, they are going to have to take it with a lot of caveats.
Ah. I always think of Larry Hagman as the guy in I dream of Jeannie.
Yes, Neighbours once brought a man back from the dead - when last seen he was standing on a rock by the sea, his wife looked away, and when she looked back he was gone.
Yep.
Rachel finally got Joshua at the end of 416 "TOW the Fake Party", but typically all we have to go on is her saying "every time" to Chandler, (about the powers of her cheerleader outfit).
I agree, but there's enough evidence to give the benefit of the doubt.
No hand-waving is required, it's only a tiny little lump, and he keeps his undershirt on. I don't see any of the difficulties that you do.
Well, you're ending up with a loveable loser who often wins.
That's what my Joey Eating Trifle remark was about, most of these sexual encounters are hard to prove beyond a reasonable doubt because this is a family show, and we're supposed to be enjoying the comedy, not drawing up sexual league tables for the characters.
Grin, okay sweetie. :)
The last time we did this, all the dubious cases were put to the vote, which is what the list I recently presented was based on, except for S7.
If you don't see them die and/or you don't see the body...they can always come back (and after 40 years on the air, I'm sure that Neighbours has covered quite a lot of ground).
Ah...right, she probably did.
Where is the benefit of the doubt going? Do you assume that they did it given lack of evidence or that they didn't do it given the lack of evidence? (if the former and you do this in real life, you must be the source of the best rumours ;-).
relationships
debatable
sex
Was he even wearing undershirts at the time? He certainly wasn't wearing one the night that she found the nubbin. Look, I'm sorry, forget the hand waving and all that. I just don't think that the plot is all that funny if she didn't find it the first time. There is no reason for her not to find out the first time and the humour in the story comes from him overcomming his stupid neurotic fears only to have hers put an end to the relationship (now he knows what it is like to be dumped because he "has a big nose" (see TOW Heckles Dies)). This is all just in MNSHO.
True...he wins much more than he thinks (even if you don't think he "won" with Susie and Ginger).
Yet, here we are trying to do it. Yes, it is a family show and they do often tend to avoid giving us all the details (plus it is funnier for them to come up with other ways of saying things and if they keep us guessing, they keep their options open).
biases
Yes, but given the volume of posts on this topic, it seems that many people still want to give input on this (perhaps there were too many hanging chads during the last vote ;-). I think that this is one of those topics which is going to come up over and over as new people join the group. Hoping to quell it with a one-time vote is not likely to be all that successful (IMO).
Besides, Smyrna clearly stated in the original post that unseen people could be included in the criteria specified for this latest list (Patrick was referenced as one of Rachel's lovers). Some people tried to tell Smyrna that he didn't count....
That's 16 years actually, it began in March 1985. You are probably thinking of Coronation Street. Anyway, we didn't see Joanna die and we didn't see the body...
Check.
There isn't a lack of evidence, there's insufficient evidence to be certain sure, but that's to be expected in a family show.
It wasn't at night, it was during the day, and he was wearing a business shirt which he kept buttoned up, except Ginger slid her hand underneath.
Not so humble?
Well, in MHO the plot is very funny either way.
And a winner who thinks he often loses is much more like Chandler.
Yep.
I need say no more than that Claire Abraham concurred in the end. :)
AFAIC he doesn't, but I never stopped you from counting him, indeed I accepted that he'd had sex with Rachel entirely on your say-so.
Oops....I don't even follow the soaps here so I should know more than to comment on soaps from other places. Yes, you are correct.
But you didn't answer my question. Which side does the benefit of the doubt favour?
I saw that episode last week...I could have sworn he was wearing a golf type shirt.
S7.
So?
Look I admire Claire Abrahams debating skills and knowledge on the subject of Friends, but just because she concurs with your list does not mean that I'm going to. That scans kind of harsh, but I don't mean it to be harsh. If you get BKC to concur, I might be swayed.
Well, I did get Jaime to back me up (well at least on the topic of American word usage)
So, why does the benefit of the doubt go to encounter happening as opposed to not happening? Do you have a reason or is that just a preference? How thin does the evidence have to be before it tips the other way? Did Rachel have sex with Sebastian? We didn't see them all the time they were together and they may not have come straight from the news stand to Central Perk. This one is very thin. How about Phoebe and Kenny? They were make-out buddies (and Joey said that Chandler made out with his sister).
I'm just trying to find out where the dividing line is in your definition. If you could, please provide an example of a couple on close to each side of that line.
But....you might where an undershirt under a business shirt, but it would be odd to wear one under a golf shirt or something similar...
"You ain't seen nothing yet"
Okay, I don't need textual evidence, I just want something that is shown in the show and is logical (to me).
What kind of textual evidence was provided that Chandler and Ginger/Susie had sex?
Thanks
Deal.
One will do (provided the other two aren't contradicting the one at the time)
Well, we have already decided it would be a little boring to have a concise travelogue of their sex lives and TV censors wouldn't like it either. Do they even have censors anymore or is it just left up to the discretion of TPTB?
I've got some stuff on this one. I found a page of the final draft of this script in one of my books, and in the original text. Chandler says he did not have sex with Mary angela, but in some countries he would have to marry Treegers bean bag chair. I don't know what that means though.
That's very interesting. It would seem that the intent of the writers was that Chandler did not actually have sex with Joey's sisterm (ie the statements which do appear in the show are not euphemisms or meant to allude to anything more than what they are at face value). Of course, since that exact comment didn't end up in the show, some might argue that it doesn't count. I think that, barring any new evidence to the contrary, it should count (and what on earth was he doing in that chair....?)
After the first few episodes, early Season Six steadily deviated from the scripts. Originally the attraction between R&R was stronger, and they couldn't divorce for at least 6 months. What would have happened by that point we don't know because the whole storyline was abandoned.
Okay, while that's a fair point, you've got to remember that there are meetings about stprylines like that. I don't think there are meetings over throwaway lines, or one liners.
They debate every line actually, even while filming. But that doesn't matter, the point is that it's what they broadcast that counts, all deletions are extremely unreliable, and no proof of anything.
Yes, but only if the director's cut really is a director's cut, and not just a longer version cobbled together by someone to sell more DVDs.
A valid director's cut is where the studio makes alterations to a movie over the director's dead body, and then later on a restored version is produced (longer or shorter) in accordance with the director's wishes.
Of course that doesn't necessarily make it better, take the case of Blade Runner for example. Blade Runner was a great movie until the director had sudden dreams of grandeur and butchered the film now the original is hard to find and rarely seen on TV. Directors are just that, they are not producers. It's just one of those things that niggles me along with some member of the cast or crew giving 'cannon' statements about loose ends of plot when they haven't got a clue themselves.
Always Coca-Cola (Who also dislikes a movie having a name stuck before its title.)
It could suggest that or it could have been removed for any number of reasons. I wouldn't be suprised if the comment was removed because the bit about the chair was deemed a bit too risqu or didn't get the laugh they thought it would.
????? How could their original intentions be proved wrong in this case? If they had originally intended for dino to be a velicoraptor, that could be proven wrong because it is "factually" wrong (as Ross explained ;-). They are writing the story. Anything that they have the characters do cannot be proven wrong (it can seem out of character). This isn't a biography.... ;-)
Neither can you use the fact that it was removed from the final show as definitive evidence that the writers changed their mind about whether the two had sex.
You can use the original script as an indication of where the script was heading. When those jokes and lines were intially written, Chandler had not slept with Joey's sister (in the minds of the creators of the show). The fact that the one definitive line which stated that he did not was removed does not take away from the fact that it is completely conceivable that he still did not sleep with her. People who interpret those lines and actors actions to mean that Chandler did not sleep with her are not WAY out in left field. They are making reasonable observations. Now, the writers can change it so Chandler did definitively have sex with her (they could even if the line had been left in because he was pretty drunk that night), but until then, I think that it is fair for people to argue that the two did not have sex (this encounter should go in the "iffy" category - IMO, of course).
Um...that is who I am refering to ("They are writing the story"). The writers create the work and they can create anything they like. They can have the characters do anything they want (but hopefully, they will keep the actions within the scope of reality and in character). The writers may have changed their minds about where they wanted to go with a story, but it doesn't make their original intent wrong - just different from their original intent. There is no wrong or right in the writer's intent on the subject of whether Chandler and Joey's sister had sex (but there could be wrong or right on our guesses on their intent).
I didn't say that it was definitive evidence, I said it suggested it.
Something removed from the script is more likely to be wrong than everything else that is left in.
I don't wish to go round the mulberry bush with this one again, Laura.
The whole story indicates that Chandler & Mary Angela had consensual sex.
If you were right, then Joey must have killed a lot of innocent men by now.
What I'm saying is that the writers realised that Joey's reaction and everything else in this story did not make sense if CB & MAT just had a quick grope, especially with MTT trying to seduce him at her Nonna's.
Yes, but its absence could have resulted for many reasons. I fully admit that it could have been removed because the writers changed their minds, but I'm just hoping to get you to concede that it may have been removed for other "capricious" reasons (they ran out of time, it wasn't funny, the bit with the chair was to deemed too risqu, the film footage was spoiled by boom mike appearing in the middle of the frame...)
conceivable
Might be...or it might just mean that they didn't think it was all that funny or...
Okay....but in your next line it looks like we are about to do another lap ;-)
In your opinion. I believe it is still reasonable to believe that they did not (and we won't even get into the argument about whether an extremely drunk individual is capable of forming consent ;-).
now.
A) Are you saying that he has killed a lot of "guilty" men by now? If he
is in the habit of killing men who fool around with his sister, does it
really matter if they are guilty or not?
B) If you believe that, he can keep all those bodies in the meat lock-up
where Monica probably keeps all the people from the restaurant that
she has threatened to kill because people on this show obviously
don't make idle threats.
And you KNOW that the writers realised this because: A) You are one B) You know one well C) You asked one of them at a fan convention D) That's what you think E) Some other reason which I'm happy to hear.
MTT may have just been trying to one-up her sister or trying to steal her boyfriend.
Of course there could have been other reasons, but that doesn't change the fact that deleted lines can't be used as evidence.
It could be that, but that doesn't change the likelihood that deleted lines are more likely to be wrong than broadcast lines.
Sigh.
I'm saying he hasn't killed any men at all, because you are wrong.
D, as you well know, I've told you enough times.
And she's never done anything like it ever before, in all her life, at anyone's house, or anyplace else; nor have any of her 6 sisters: because if she or they ever have, then Joey would literally have killed him.
I totally disagree, (based on what was in the EPISODE), but please excuse me if I don't repeat the whole huge debate that I've only just had with Laura.
Rachel said "We just met at the newsstand". She was thinking of taking him to the charity ball, but he left without giving her his phone number.
In my book Phoebe did have sex with Kenny, in which case thankyou for reminding me that the euphemism was "made out", which fits in with Chandler have sex with Mary Angela.
Without spending hours poring over the scripts, it's hard to provide examples close to the line, so here's the list in category/episode order...

I'm simply saying that Chandler was not topless, so Ginger did not see his nubbin, she felt it. Since you guys speak a weird form of English it would get too complicated if we discuss what clothes he was wearing.
Grin.
I'll have to search back through the archives for that, once we had an agreed-upon ATF list there was no need to keep all the discussion.
:)
Okay.
I don't know, I think the writers get their innuendi through by making them sound as innocent as possible, but Rachel & Barry are the only really good visual example, IIRC.
Did you miss these questions? I would really like to know the answer.
Your list is helpful, but I'm just curious to hear your answers.
Ah-ha! But she could have lied! Or Maybe "We just met at the newsstand" is some new cryptic why of saying that they had sex. Is that what the kids are calling it these days? ;-)
I don't think that they had sex. I'm just trying to see how thin the evidence has to be. This is just one of the thinnest cases I could come up with.
Really? In the copy room? With a guy she just met? At her friend's work place? She may have done it the second time that she met with him.
"Made out" is usually just an euphemism for necking/groping. Or at least that is how it is generally used around here. Phoebe and Rachel mention kissing. Sleeping around is just mentioned as the next "logical" step (the boss is worried that Rachel is trying to get ahead by getting involved with the head honcho).
examples
<snip a mountain of data, but with a few comments added>
How does somebody end up in this category? For example, Ross didn't have any liasons with the Tribbiani sisters, yet he doesn't get mentioned here while Chandler does get mentioned with Gina, Cookie, Tina, Dina, Veronica and Marie-Theresa. Joey gets mentioned with Sarah Ferguson, but Chandler does not get mentioned with Felicity. This list could be huge? What is its criteria?
Okay, how does George get to be on any list when Jen doesn't get mentioned anywhere with respect to Joey in 517? Also, If George gets a mention, what about the UNG (or at least when he was CNG)?
Doesn't Ross belong here with Mrs. Waltham (501)? She kept hitting on him and patted his butt.
Why isn't coma guy in no liason? What gets a character from "no liason" to "nothing happened"? Joey was interested in Margha but "nothing happened". Margha agreed to date Chandler, but just as quickly backed out.
Umm...I'm pretty sure that there must have been some "actual bodily contact". She did keep kicking him away.
They also kissed in 614
I SO disagree with this.
Iffy
Unlikely
You have got to be kidding. They didn't take it to the "next level" (creak-creak) until TOW the Cuffs. He didn't think she was so dull then.
Iffy
Shouldn't Rachel and Ross be mentioned as having a relationship because the marriage was really a seperate event.
Shouldn't you add 616 Ro Carol Willick?
Legally, an argument has been made that surrogates are also parents.
I made a few comments.
would
Well, some clothes is more loose than others and more likely to have hands slipped under. It goes to opportunity.
Do you approximately when this discussion happened or what it was titled. Perhaps google has made the deja archive available again.
Each is merely judged on merit, I guess - but don't quote me on that.
We are a bunch of fans discussing a sitcom Laura, we're not drafting a constitution or passing a bill through congress or judging a murder case or publishing a scientific paper or solving a mathematical theorem or proving the non-existence of God... :)
In that case I had sex with a police officer, an old lady, a mother with her daughter, two young lads, and a busty blonde this evening.
I think you succeeded sweetie. :)
Here's an abridged version from 608 "TOW Ross's Teeth"...
[Scene: Rachel's office at Ralph Lauren]
PHOEBE: You will not believe this. But, I was in the copy room, making
copies, and Ralph Lauren came in.
RACHEL: Oh my God. Did you talk to him?
PHOEBE: Yeah a little. He seems really nice. Good kisser.
RACHEL: What? What!?! You kissed him?
PHOEBE: Totally.
RACHEL: (Gasps) Phoebe are you serious?
PHOEBE: Yeah. I was just in there. He introduced himself and the next
thing I know, we're making out. You know.
RACHEL: Phoebe, I mean, you do know he's married?
PHOEBE: No!
RACHEL: Phoebe-
PHOEBE: What am I supposed to do? Ask every guy I make out with if he's
married? (Rachel looks at her.) No, yeah, I should.
[Scene: An elevator at the Ralph Lauren offices.]
RACHEL: So I hear that Ralph Lauren fooled around with someone in the copy room. (Kim stops reading, halts the elevator, and turns to Rachel.) KIM: Tell me everything.
[Scene: Central Perk, Monica & Chandler are joined by Rachel.]
RACHEL: You guys are never going to believe this, but Phoebe made out
with Ralph Lauren!
CHANDLER: What???
MONICA: Oh my god!
RACHEL: Yeah I know. She ran into him at my office and they just- made
out. And now my boss likes me because I told her about it and
she said it was the best gossip she'd heard all year.
MONICA: Rachel, I can't believe Phoebe made out with Ralph Lauren. Ohh,
I'm so jealous.
(Phoebe walks in.)
PHOEBE: Hey. Here. (Hands Chandler a copy of her flyer and sees the
picture of Ralph.) Ooh, who's the silver fox?
RACHEL: That-that is your makeout buddy. Don't you recognize him? Oh
wait. (Holding up the magazine in front of her face) Ooh, Phoebe,
I love you. Kiss me please.
PHOEBE: That's not Ralph Lauren. Sounds like him though.
RACHEL: What?
PHOEBE: Yeah, no, Ralph's... doesn't look anything like that guy. He's-
he's young and he's got long hair and a beard and a hacky sack.
RACHEL: Phoebe, that's not Ralph Lauren. That's Kenny the copy guy.
PHOEBE: What?
RACHEL: Oh..Go..Oh..and I told my boss that someone made out with Ralph
Lauren. If she finds out that I lied to her, she is going to hate
me even more. Phoebe!!
PHOEBE: Why would the copy guy say he was Ralph Lauren?
RACHEL: To get you to make out with him!!!
PHOEBE: Ohhh.
..from all those reactions, that was sex they were talking about.
Sorry Laura, but it is evident that the show's writers use the phrase "making out" as a euphemism for having sex, even if Canadians don't.
Little effort was made to see how many of these we could collect.
That was on the list, but *you* snipped it out! <g>
CNG is an interesting suggestion.
Yes, she does. Thanks. I'll add that.
Because Monica & Rachel had a one-way relationship with him, they even competed for his non-existent attentions.
That's why Chandler got "nothing happened" and Joey got "no liason".
No she didn't, none of the events in 616 happened. <g>
117 was first.
So you do.
Makeout = sex.
Very likely.
Yay Laura! You won one!! I'm so happy for you!
The episode where they met was entered by mistake. Thanks.
It is a bit, and all data from Season 7 was not debated by ATF.
The idea is that their relationship proceeded at such a breakneck speed that little time was required for consummation.
No, because marriage supersedes this category.
No, he didn't marry her in 616. If this list had been devised years earlier, the entry would read 101, the episode when we found out, and then that would have been superseded when they had a child in 123.
You can argue if you like that Susan is Ben's parent, but not that her relationship to Ross is being the mother of his child.
Yes thanks, especially for the 320/403 correction.
I'm merely asking your what criteria you use. It's fine if you say "That's just the way I felt about it", but better if you have some specific criteria. If you have certain criteria that you can use to outline, I can understand why you make the decisions you make. I can also find better arguments to shoot yours down using your on logic... ;-)
Tennant, surely you know that it is very difficult to prove a negative.
number.
Why you randy fellow! But, I suppose that you just don't use that "We just met at the newsstand" euphemism in England
Thank you ;-)
Thanks.
Hmmm...kissing and making out are used interchangeably....just saying. And I think that most people would say that even just "totally" kissing a married guy is not something somebody other than his wife should just do.
Ooo...and here we see how gossip works. A story becomes more exciting when it is retold. Pretty soon Ralph will have done every woman on the third floor and a friend of a friend will have the photocopies to prove it.
Again kissing and making out...used interchangeably.
That is your interpretation. I think it is reasonable to assume that they had not.
Okay, these writers may, but, in my experience, most writers on American Television do not (from the evidence which is shown). BTW how many times have the writers of Friends used the term "making out" to mean sex when the two characters definitively had sex (ie there is more evidence than just that phrase)?
Okay
Oops...
So, does he make the list? (Did I win three?)
That makes two.
Err...isn't that Monica and Phoebe?
But nothing really happened with Chandler either. There is just a whisper thin difference between them.
Then how come you have her listed in your "nothing happened" list for 616 (that is your entry)? Should everybody in that show be in the "nothing happened" category? I'm merely trying to push her entry into another category. BTW She appears twice in the list with respect to Ross. I thought people only got on once (is 616 a special case?)
So, only the first time gets you mentioned and the most serious relationship gets mentioned?
And continue to do so ;-)
Proof! I want proof! ;-)
EXTREMELY unlikely ;-)
Come on, I won at least two (I got Mrs. Waltham on the list too).
Yet, that somehow sounds so condescending....;-)
You're welcome.
Could be. That is why I say iffy (could be, could not be...both entirely plausible).
Okay.
Oooh...so having children even supercedes being married? I would really argue that those are two line items.
Err..I was thinking of Phoebe's relationship with the triplets. Although she is not biologically their parent, some courts have extended rights to the birth mother (the surrogate which carried the babies). Susan isn't a surrogate in the context in which I meant it.
Well, actually it was a newsagents, but no we don't. :)
YW
There was kissing, then *total* kissing, then making out which involved him cheating on his wife. We are simply arguing over euphemisms, because they can't say that Ralph Lauren fucked Phoebe on the A2 photo-copier.
Yep, but we heard it (euphemistically) from the horse's mouth.
Just because Rachel pretended to be RL asking for a kiss don't mean that's all that went on, what do you expect her to do in the coffee shop, rip all of Phoebe's clothes off and mount her? I guess Gunther would like that.
Once again we come down to this, several characters making a big deal out of some event which cannot be described explicitly, and you dismiss it as a mere kiss & cuddle.
Well, "making out", "make out", "makeout", and "made out", are used in all sorts of ways, and there is a broad spectrum from the irrelevant (making out a card in 502), to a kiss in 716, to a play on words (both a kiss & an enquiry about events in 208), through several cases which would be petting, and then those we're arguing over. It's always rather vague but that's what you'd expect of a family show. There are 23 examples altogether, and I'm not going to list them because you'll start a huge debate about each one.
That's okay. :)
Okay, I'll put him in just for you, sweetheart. :)
I already put her in.
Of course.
I said that nothing happened with Chandler.
Don't start picking nits out of what is just a short heading.
Events in 616 (and 615) should indeed be in the "nothing happened" category, bearing in mind that Chandler & Monica did nothing extra.
615/6 is indeed a special case, because if it had been real then it would supersede other entries, so its liaisons are listed as "nothing happened" to show that the episode had not been overlooked.
This also means that other fantasy events (such as the end of 306, the start of 516, and another episode I shan't mention) should also go in that category, so I've just updated the list. Thanks for the bunk-up.
It's the first occurrence *of* the most serious relationship.
No, Andrea Waltham was merely an addition, for which I'm grateful, but 320 instead of 403 was an error which I was very glad to correct.
No that was a genuine remark. If you ever think that I might be condescending, then know in advance that it will never be so.
:)
Okay.
Yes. Bear in mind that it's actually the relationship of having children together, so for example a child born from a rape wouldn't count.
I don't know what you mean by "two line items".
Ah - you misled me by quoting "Carol Willick" as though you had confused her with Susan Bunch (I did that once) but no matter, the principle still stands.
You can argue if you like that Phoebe is the triplets' parent, but not that her relationship to Frank is being the mother of his children.
I don't think the original question was limited to those we have seen -
nor those we have even heard about, for that matter. The question was,
"who among the group has had sex with the most folks since the show
started." Therefore, the only limitation was "since the show started." If
that is the limiting factor, we can't even count Carol for Ross, for
example. Unless we include flashback and fantasy episodes, by the time "the
show started" they had already broken up.
I still imagine the answer has to be Joey. Even if we have rarely seen
him with women, from his talk and reputation, I would say he sleeps with
several women each month.
You are quite correct Scott, that the original question allowed gossip and hearsay and supposition to be included, but the trouble is that then we can just assume anything we like - I reckon that Joey is only in 3rd place on the grounds of Monica's ball-park in 218, and Phoebe's great expertise in getting rid of unwanted lovers as demonstrated in 105.
He was out all night with her, he felt so guilty he lied about it, Phoebe warned him that they would have very hairy children, Janice explained that she was a young woman and with Chandler in Yemen she still had needs, she called Ross "Mister Right Place at the Right Time", and she warned Joey that she had now scored two out of three.
I know you have the answer ... do you think Angela Delvecchio is the same as the Angela from the first episode when Joey can't remember if his date is with Angela (who has cats) or Andrea (the screamer), and then remembers it is Julie?
Why aren't the ones you only hear about listed? The totals for all would change drastically. It was not so long ago mentioned that Phoebe was having a "secret" affair with someone (I forget who). I think the girls, all 3, are up there with Joey.
But there was a reference to at least two more this season (last but one E4 ep I think) that blows that theory... Rachel's selectively edited her past.
