Spoiler space and the Euro "dirty little secret:" UMTF

I'd be a lot more sympathetic to all the outcry from outside the U.S. about spoiler space if it weren't for the Euro's (I use that as shorthand for areas other than the U.S.; of course, Europe is only one such area) dirty little secret: uk.media.tv.friends (UMTF). There seems to be a concerted effort to keep UMTF hidden from the U.S. -- for instance, I've seen dicta on UMTF about not crossposting from UMTF to ATF.

Let's face it: the name of *this* group is alt.tv.friends, not "alt.tv.friends.nospoilers" or "alt.tv.friends.no-US-discussion." It should be open to *any* discussion about Friends. Why should U.S. viewers -- or anybody else -- be limited in what they can say, or how they say it, just because the BBC or whomever is a year or two behind? As has been pointed out before, no such consideration is extended to U.S. or other non-U.K. viewers in discussion groups about BBC shows.

So: those want to maintain spoiler space, do it on UMTF; ATF posters can simply refrain from crossposting spoilers to UMTF. Seems simple and fair enough. Or, hey, create "alt.tv.friends.nospoilers," maybe as a group moderated by one of the hardcore no-spoiler types.

If you mean "with spoiler space", again (!) where's the burden. It takes me a grand total of 2 seconds to insert the proper spoiler space.

<sigh> ATF is special, and it has been so for many years. The latin phrase is "de facto" I believe. If I were interested in any current BBC shows, I could comment on that part of your comment. Each newsgroup has it's own unique dynamic.

And, the fact remains that what we are asking for here is such a little thing it is so hard to understand why there is so much resistance. It is so easy to do. By contrast, not doing it seems to cause real problems for some people.

See, *that's* the beef here. It'd be different if we were really asking a lot. We're not. I really don't get this parochial attitude. Yes, it is an option that happens to have been taken in other groups, but you are wasting more time and energy advocating the attitude than you will ever spend simply giving in on such a simple matter that doesn't hurt you one bit.

The resistance is based on principle (i'm wondering) not because they think its a burden to press Enter 200 times.

Why is it so hard to use spoiler space? This newsgroup was nice and peaceful for the past week until you posted this message, wasting more space arguing about something that has been argued about over and over again and beaten to the ground.

I know...it pisses me off when people act like that...I love discussing Friends on this newgroup, but people need to understand this IS A NEWSGROUP and is open for anyone to post whatever they want, so don't tell people "they are breaking the rules" or that they "are trying to change things around." There are no set rules here. I agree people should be considerate of others to an extent (sometimes I forget spoiler space, or don't bother because I am simply answering a question someone else asked.). But I am really turned off from being courteous with spoiler space when these people who request it seem to demand it and act as if they are an authority.
