I think that "Cringeworthy" makes the show funny. Cringeworthy doesn't mean just "gross" to me it means "shockingly funny". And some of you have said that the eppy TOW Joey loses his insurance is cringeworthy and I would agree. But to me it was Funny! When Joey said "Hey Timmy, I've got something for you" while his hand was in his pants I was shocked, but I laughed so hard that I nearly threw up!! And In TOW The Inappropriate Sister when the scenes with the brother and sister are joking around, I thought it was "Cringeworthy" but also halarious. I definately think that Cringeworthy makes friends funny. Whenever they can shock ME, then I say that it was a funny episode. What does everyone think?

I think that "cringeworthy", in that particular context, meant something that we thought was forced, stupid, or somehow ineffective. A moment like what you described above comes closer to being "shocking."

I thought it was funny. I have a very strange sense of humor though. There aren't many things that I would consider cringeworthy.

I think we are confusing two issues here. "Cringeworthy," as Paul defined it, is a scene that is poorly done, does not work, and makes the audience feel they are watching something inappropriate or subpar. "Shockingly funny" takes controversial material and turns it into something that, while it disturbs complacent attitudes, does work. "Cringeworthy" does necessarily mean bad - but we may not agree on what is "cringeworthy" rather than "shocking" anymore than we agree on who the Best Friend is.

Okay, I have a question. How do networks get their ratings? And for that matter make money? Okay, i turn on the tv and then lets say i turn to channel 4(NBC here), does somebody at NBC have a computer that immediately shows that I(another viewer) have just tuned into NBC and thats how they get ratings? And do they get money from my Cable provider? Like, for every minute that i am tuned in to a channel, that channel gets a certain percent of my monthly cable bills?

I have been confused about this for years. Anyone know?

They use a company like Nielson. I don't know if they are everywhere, but some of their offices are right down the road and I know a lot of people that work for them, so I have learned too much about them. To make the story short, people get boxes that get attached to their computers with a switch for each viewer in the house. When someone is watching tv they flip their switch to on and this is how they know the age groups of the people watching the shows. They also keep journals about what they watch, but this is the short version.

"us" people. My sister had one for a while and I have known quite a few who had one. I went for years not seeing one, and all of a sudden they popped up. They even mentioned it on Roseanne. I think they got one and had fun with it watching PbS and other stuff that they wouldn't normally watch so that Neilson would think they were "cultured". it normally works out pretty even because they choose all different kinds of people. If you ever hear of the "Neilson Ratings" this is what they are talking about.

IMO, any seasons after S8 will be entirely up to the actors, nothing to do with ratings.
