-More Continuity Errors-

I don't know if these were already noted before, but I am going to type them up anyway. I realized all 3 of them just last night.

(WARNING: Continuity Error # 3 contains a spoiler for those outside the USA.)

Continuity Error # 1

I was watching the episode TOW the Thanksgiving Flashbacks on DVD and during the episode we and the gang reminisce back to 1992 when Phoebe was still living with Monica. When Phoebe walks in to her and Monica's apartment, Joey comes in with a turkey on his head. Obviously Phoebe didn't know Joey till he moved in with Chandler. Which comes to the conclusion that how come Phoebe is still living in Monica's apartment after she had already moved out of Monica's apartment during the time Joey just moved in (which was 1993)?

Continuity Error # 2

Last night (1/11) on syndication, TOW Heckles Dies and TOW the Embryos were being shown. In TOW the Embryos Phoebe comes out of the bathroom after taking her first pregnancy test. She says then she is going to lie upside down on M/R's couch so 'gravity can do it's job." But the episode that was aired before it (TOW Heckles Dies), she specifically said she partially does not believe in gravity.

Continuity Error # 3

In last night's (1/11) episode TOW They're Up All Night, when Joey and Ross are hanging from the ladder Ross is clinging on to Joey's pants in which Joey says to Ross that he should stop holding on to them because his pants are starting to fall and he is not wearing any underwear, just like he states in TOW No One's Ready. But in the episode that aired last week (TOW All the Cheesecakes), when Joey goes into his room as Chandler is following him, Joey takes off his pants revealing he DOES wear underwear...well actually boxers.

It's not a continuity error. Phoebe didn't live there, but she acted like she does, just as the others do, for example Joey using Monica's bathroom in 710. Anyway, the caption was wrong, since it should have said "Thanksgiving 1993". Notice also that the "Thanksgiving 1987" caption was missing altogether.

That's not true, on three counts.

One - even if that was so, it wouldn't be a continuity error. People have inconsistent opinions, and sometimes say one thing & sometimes another.

Two - the whole point of Phoebe's thesis, which people persist in not listening to, is there are a lot of things that she doesn't believe in, but that doesn't mean they're not true.

Three - Phoebe said that it's not so much that she doesn't believe in gravity as that lately she got the feeling that she was not so much being pulled down as being pushed - so lying upside down would still help.

I've deleted this without reading it, as I shan't see the episode until next week. Betcha it's no more a continuity error than the rest. :)

I think it's worth pointing out that the four main types of "goof" in the Internet Movie Database are defined in their help files as...

Continuity errors - Errors in technical detail, where the film objectively contradicts itself.

Plot holes - Errors in narrative structure as opposed to technical detail.

Factual errors - Concepts which contradict science or known facts.

Anachronisms - Objects or concepts which didn't exist at the time the film was set.

Sitcoms used to be taped from 3 or 4 TV cameras working simultaneously, with the director switching cameras, so continuity errors were impossible, but a show like "Friends" is filmed with multiple cameras and multiple takes, so continuity errors are possible, and indeed there are such errors in *every* episode. However, they are all so trivial they are not worth commenting on, since maybe someone moves an arm or a facial expression jumps slightly.

The majority of what people call continuity errors are in fact plot holes, for example at one point in "Seinfeld" Jerry had cable TV at home, then in what had to be a later episode he installed cable TV for the first time.

The problem with reporting plot holes (and factual errors) is that you must allow the characters to be fallible people. If Ross says that John Voight starred in "The Deer Hunter", then Ross is in error, not the writers.

Similarly, if Joey declares he never wears underwear, even if he swears on a stack of bibles that he never wears underwear, yet in one episode he did wear underwear, that's Joey being fallible, not the writers.

A simple, "Matt that's not a continuity error", would of been better. I mean people besides me make mistakes too (suprise suprise!), and I'm sure you have too.

Again, a fabrication in your mind. She didn't say she didn't believe in gravity, she just questioned how it worked. Whether shes being pushed or pulled the effect would be the same.

I was wondering if you'd eventually see this after I realised you wouldn't when I first posted it. I got slammed by a newbie for saying that of course, not that you would have realised that at the time when he/she/it was complaining.

Maybe I did go a bit over the top with my shoot them idea, and I have nothing against continuity observers, but when they aren't errors at all, its just annoying.

Yesterdays BBC2 episode of The Simpsons said a lot. The whole episode was pretty much a response to years of whining on alt.tv.simpsons but they raise very interesting points, such as, as a loyal fan of the show, they DON'T owe us, we wouldn't be able to watch it at all if they didn't make it.

And also, when a cartoon mouse plays a cartoon cats ribcage as a xylophone, hits the same rib twice, and gets two different sounds, really, nobody should care. I felt quite good about how much less obsessed with TV I am now compared to 3-4 years ago.

Now if I could just find the way out of all these tv newsgroups :) /me ducks flying nachos.

hmm. 2 Simpsons references in a Friends group. Not good :) Maybe i'll stay until Friends ends.

They also had a go at obsessed fans who quote episode numbers when they meet the stars of the show. As someone who always does this when writing on the newsgroup, this is to make it easy for other people to check up on what I'm saying. Tennant has offerred explanations for the other two possible errors, so I'll just offer a possible explanation on the third one (which contained a spoiler Tennant did not want to read)

I don't think that Joey has ever said that he never wears any underwear. He obviously owns some since Chandler stole them in TOW No One's Ready. In that show, he just says that he is not wearing any now and that he wants to wear some later that night. Again, in last nights show, he just said that he was not wearing any underwear at that moment.

In addition to TOW the Cheesecakes, Joey also wore them in TOW Monica's Thunder (actually, he wore Chandler's).

So, sometimes he wears them, sometimes he does not.
