Umm...now that I have thought about it, on the scale of Thanksgivingyness (my purely subjective scale on how much I think an episode reflected the "Spirit of Thanksgiving"), I would rank them 1, 4, 5, 6, 3, 7, 2.

Yes, but Chandler was supposed to look like an idiot so the producers casting of a cute, innocent looking dog helped to drive home their point.

What I meant is that cute things are often presumed to be innocuous (because as you say, they often are).

Exactly....looks can be deceiving.

If we were doing a serious show on the subject and wished to explore all aspects of the dog-hating debate, I would support this claim. For humour purposes, they chose a dog which seemed to exhibit none of the tendencies which Chandler prejudicially ascribed to all dogs (it wasn't overly needing hanging out in its room for three days without being detected, it never jumped once and it looked completely unthreatening (and looked like it wasn't thinking much at all)).

No, you will see a completely different story because it is a different story. Look, did you complain that the triplets were SO cute and well behaved? Shouldn't they have been shrieking like banshees and throwing up all over Chandler so that he could learn to appreciate babies when they are being horrible? Sure, they somehow became more problematic when Phoebe was alone with them, but we never saw it (and she probably did more damage to that apartment than they did). They could also have had less photogenic babies.

You said that Chandler "was scared because to him the animal was unpredictable." I said "Yah, if Clunkers couldn't put the fear of God into you, nothing could....". You responded with "This is *exactly* why I'm complaining about the animal's cuteness. Cut off all those pretty tufts of hair & you'd regard it differently." I took that too mean that you were implying that if you cut off her hair she would look threatening enough for Chandler to be scared of her. What did you mean by those statements?

I said that she MIGHT look pitiful. If you have ever seen a dog with a bad haircut, they can look pretty pitiful.

And I was teasing right back...

You're welcome! ;-)

True, but they are more often refered to as Chick and Duck and I followed the habit.

Well, they have been getting into the medicine cabinet recently...

Okay, I don't think that "Chicken Run" is any authority for factual information on chickens ;-)

Ah...mystery solved. I was referencing that psychologist that Phoebe dated in season 1 who pointed out all of the friends pyschological problems. The friends hated him for it and Phoebe dumped him. As you point out above, the fact that they all have problems is one of the basic givens of the series. I pointed out that if Roger had stayed around, those problems might have been resolved. Hence, no reason for the series.

The phantom dog would likely not have been the death of the show ;-)

Why? So they don't get mistaken for character names? Satan is awfully close to Susan (and Ross would probably agree! ;-)

There you go.

He checked Ross's.

That's New Jersey!

Island....why are you skipping the second part of the names? Just curious.

Hey! Isn't that where the name came from in the first place? (or so I have been told that the state was named in honour of Queen Elizabeth I). Of course, you have to remember that there is a Virginia and a West Virginia (as I recall, Virginia saw no reason to change its name when the state split into two prior to the US Civil War).

How about "mountain" for Montana? York could be anything that rhymes with it "torque", "fork", "Mork" Vermont could just be Green Mountain (which is what it is). Minnesota could be "mini-soda". Utah could be "U-haul". I'm out.

asked

Really? Having a toenail accidently flicked at you and going down your shirt wouldn't have caused the average man to at least jump?

He said he hates dogs. He says it with conviction. It is the thing which Joey tries to prevent him from saying. He gives reasons for hating them.

Titles can be deceiving. They may not have wanted to give too much away.

At the time, Ross hated America because it had too many states. He said what he said when he was EXTREMELY frustrated. Most people have probably made similar statements about things under similar circumstances (it also showed that he was being childish).

In contrast, Chandler said what he said as an admission and to explain his actions. Most people would not admit to hating something which they did not.

It goes to motivation.

Ross continues to live in the US (I don't think I'm spoiling anything) despite claiming in the next sentence that he was going to move as soon as he finished the test. Chandler, on the other hand, demanded that the dog be instantly removed from the house with no regard to where the animal might go. ("And I don't wanna say this, I don't you guys to hate me, but uh, I don't think, I can be around that dog anymore. Okay, so either the dog goes, or I go"). These actions demonstrates that he was more serious about hating the dog than Ross was.

You will also recall that Joey does not correct Chandler when he says that he, Chandler, hates dogs, but Joey does go on to say that Ross does not like ice cream.

Finally, you have come up with a long list of anti-dog statements that Chandler has made over the year. I don't think that you could come up with a conclusive list of such statements to support Ross hating America.

I think that they got lucky that they didn't have to have him secretly hating turtles or something. I bet this all hinges on the fact that he gave his future speech to her earlier in the year which required her to switch one thing (in this case the pet) and the fact that she is allergic to cats (or at least thinks that she is...she couldn't have switched the "dream" dog to a cat).

Only somebody working on the show can tell us the truth, so we shall have to keep our own "pet" theories until that time.

stay

Yep. That is why you should train your dog in lots of different environments so they just don't behave in class.

According to the "Intelligence of Dogs" they are rated in the top 5 breeds for intelligence (I think they are second).

Yes, cats are great at being aloof. I've seen the neighbourhood squirrels do the same thing.

And they don't get confused and go after one of the other curtains (or the posh curtains)?

Well, at least puppies are faster to house-train than toddlers. ;-)

accuracy)

you

Probably ;-)

Yes, but the hucksters cheat. It doesn't matter how good Yasmine is, an aged chicken is not match for them.

Yet another reason why I do not write for the show...

Does he know about her tap dancing? She only admitted to taking Fake Monica for lunch.

Provided it doesn't look too much like Irish Step Dancing (one of the biggest roots of tap dancing). If she does that, the "beejezus" will be scared out of him and he will flee the room. ;-)

BTW If she kept up the tap dancing and it is as noisy as you say, I'm surprised that Mr. Heckles didn't die sooner.

It is an O. Henry story about a young couple without very much money. They both decide to sacrifice their most precious belonging so that they can buy a present for the other for their first Christmas. I'll say no more because I don't want to spoil a perfectly good story.

In comparison to what?

Good.

That is fine, but you have admitted to being a poor judge of male flesh so your scale of male cuteness is circumspect...it lacks credibility.

LOL....you know nothing about knitting... ;-)

Actually, it did look a bit like one of those too-cute Muppets (but not at all like a regular Muppet...(e.g. Rowlf the dog))

Not whatever. The pretty boy scale and the cute scale are on seperate axis. You can be really a pretty boy and really cute or a really pretty boy and fairly cute or or not all that much of a pretty boy and really cute or.... I won't claim that they are completely independent things because there are some factors in common.

than

Yes, but you want dogs cast which are no more cuter than the men on the show. You think that the men are ordinary, but admit that you are a poor judge of the male flesh. You've knocked out your own credibility on the topic. You now wish the producers to somehow conform to your whacked out scale of male cuteness when casting dogs. How can they even hope to do that?

No. I have put the apples in their basket and the oranges in their basket and asked you to compare amongst them. I am then asking you to a give subjective assessments on items in each basket. Is a given apple better than the other apples? Is the given orange better than the other oranges. Where does each apple/orange fit in amongst the other apples/oranges. You cannot tell me that the apple they cast is too good when it is one of the crappiest apples in the basket (especialy if all the oranges they cast are only the best oranges in the basket...you should then be complaining about the oranges).

Is Monica too cute? Is the dog really that much cuter than all dogs that size? Remember, one of my initial points is that the producers tend to cast cute everything in this show (unless they need something to be less than cute to make a point). They did not suddenly adopt a new casting policy with this dog.

Neither. I am extremely vexed that I have not been able to explain my point well enough to make you understand it.

Why should I care if you think the guys are trolls while finding the dog to be adorable? I think you are wrong. I think you are so wrong that I have decided to defend the honour of the producers.....Da Da Da Dah! Mighty Mouse...defender of downtrodden producers everywhere...the dog is no cuter than the average dog than the guys are cuter than the average guy! ...the producers are not morons!...okay, the producers don't need me to defend them (they can do that themselves) and I probably spend too much time picking on the poor producers myself... ;-)

I was trying to compare Clunkers to other dogs and I'm sorry if you think that me pointing out that Clunkers is no cuter than other dogs than the cast is to other humans was completely unreasonable and muddled the debate. I thought I was merely pointing out that casting cute things is a trend the show tends to follows. In fact, TV tends to be where the beautiful people/ things are (IMO). The apartments are too big, the things in the apartments are too expensive, they spend too much time at the coffee shop (and how do they get control of the couch all the time), the people are all far too cute...yet the dog is too cute to be realistic??????????????? Whatever.

How about a Golden Retriever puppy which is still just a ball of fuzz?

are

Well, unless there is something inheritently wrong with red bananas, this recent rule has done nothing ensure that food is of higher quality. What this standardisation has done is to encourage monoculture crops and worked to reduce bio-diversity. That Britain, a country in which many people are working hard to preserve heritage plants/animals, is behind this suprises me. I'm further surprised that the "capitalist-backed" press is not applauding this because evil capitalists are normally in favour of monoculture practices (only growing one type of high yield trees, cows, wheat, tomatoes, whatever or a few types of apples which look pretty and travel well, but don't have much taste). Our environment is much better able to survive catastophic viruses/etc if divesity is preserved. Besides that, why should the fans of red bananas be deprived their food of choice? They are not hurting anybody.

She was obsessively trying to find out the recipe. Making 22 batches of cookies all at once that one really doesn't intend to eat is obsessive. Cooking dinner or catering a wedding is not in itself obsessive, unless it is obsessive. She did eventually give up after she had tried everything, which shows she is less obsessive than before.

Yes, and sometimes I have been obsessive about it. Ross's interest was piqued to find all fifty states and he spent a number of hours working on it. Was he obsessive? Yes. It is all a matter of degrees and motiviation. Monica was driven to find that recipe.

Too many

Truthfully? Both.

She was obsessive about eating cookies. If she had not broken her eating obsessions, they might have eventually killed her.

Perhaps it isn't the best example, but it was the one I thought of first (perhaps because it is recent).

Is he obsessive? ;-) Is he just having fun? If the entire meal is ruined, does he just laugh it off and order in a pizza? Does every little detail have to be perfect, even the details he hates to take care of?

Grrr....I'm not an expert on lactose intolerance or where dairy is or is not consumed. I have met some Chinese people who were repulsed at the concept of consuming a liquid which was excreted from the body of an animal and they mentioned that dairy is not traditionally consumed in China. I have been to China and never ate a traditional recipe which contained a milk product (though, they do sell ice cream, but cheese is very expensive and not all that popular). China is the third largest and most populous country in the world, though, so I did not want to generalize something which may be only common in parts of the country.

How about Malaysia? When I was there, there was an article in the newspaper about the only herd of dairy cows in the country (living high in the mountains...the heat is apparently too much for dairy cows). You could still buy ice cream there, though, imported from New Zealand (IMHO, New Zealand has the best ice cream in the world, so they at least chose well)

Because it was Thanksgiving. Because he didn't care if the dog didn't have anywhere to go. Because he only had to put up with the dog for a few hours and could have kept it banished in Phoebe's room. Because Monica wished it could stay. Because he was not willing to compromise at all.

Well, Monica shouldn't have had to have agreed with him. He was within his rights, but there was no give and only take on his part until he thought she was sobbing. Unless she is devastated, what he wants should be what they do? There was no discussion. He gave an ultimatum and that was that. What would you have said if she had responded to his ultimatum with one of her own ("Either both the dog and I stay or we both go and you can cook your own stupid dinner!") Or better yet, if he said he hated dogs, but she dropped her ultimatum (no ultimatum from him)? Would you be all "well it was within her rights", "she did nothing wrong", "she wanted the dog there as a guest, it is her apartment and she was hosting the dinner".

Which was very nice of him.

And always a good ploy when trying to influence Monica (check out TOW the Joke where Chandler himself tried that).

Oh, I must have missed that. Was that when he lied about being allergic to dogs or when he dropped his ultimatum?

Really? The devil made her do it? Monica has no free will?

Yep (although, in his defence he was just trying to protect Phoebe, Monica and Clunkers from a lying, ulitmatum dropping dictator..... ;-)
