The atf Friends awards 2000 nomination call repost

Ladies and the Gentleman in the corner, we are proud to announce the repost (we're proud to announce anything, we don't get to do it a lot) about nominations for The alt.tv.friends Awards 2000!

The a.t.f awards is a barrel of fun if its done right and although it's hard to fit that fun into a barrel it's normally me who's doing the awards so there isn't generally a lot of fun anyway. Yay!

Feel like you want to have a say in who is proclaimed things like the best comic, best newcomer and even the best overall poster? Then look further, the a.t.f awards are for you the people to decide. Everybody has their vote from the screaming child to the feeble old deer, it doesn't matter how long you've been here or how much you've posted here if at all. We want to hear from you because you make this group what it is.

But before you can vote on who wins we need nominees. How do we get the nominees? Well that's where you all come in. Below are the categories for the awards, all you have to do is write in who you want to nominate for that category and hopefully a line as to why. You can nominate as many people as you want for each category but with one condition, you can't nominate yourself. I'll repeat that just in case, you cannot nominate yourself, it's just not allowed. When you've decided on who you want to nominate just email your chosen ones back to me at [email]

All nominations must be in by Thursday 21st December (the shortest day). Voting will begin shortly afterwards.

Best Friends Poster (The poster that posts the best stuff about Friends)

Funniest Poster (The poster that. . . . well I think that speaks for itself)

Most Anal Poster (The poster that can remember what Monica had on her feet in 4.02 and has worked out when all the characters birthdays are)

Friendliest Poster (A friendly person in a Friends newsgroup? :)

Best Newcomer (The poster that has just appeared this year but is going strong)

Most Missed Poster (Gone but not forgotten)

Write-in-award (For the award that's been missed out and the person you want to give it to)

Best Overall Poster (The poster who combines it all no matter what the subject, on or off topic, into the best overall package)

Regarding my history of winning: I won Best Overall Poster three years in a row, including last year when I began my metamorphisis into Mental Geller, and deserved to be the Most Disgusted Poster. I won Best Friends poster the first year of the awards - the year I had the Little Dauphin bite Schwimmer - and I think I won it last year, too, because I remember that I wrote one acceptance speech, felt like I had to write another but just couldn't get up the enthusiasm so I let the surprised housewife routine count for both.

I dunno. Maybe because I've been a huge fan of "Friends" since it began, and I've debated it in another forum since the show moved to satellite on 8th January 1998, so having read the FAQ I wasn't such an utter newbie.

Yeah like Deja's accurate, last time I checked Jo and MNL never existed (that's somewhat true in the case of the former but in the sense of the posts not being recorded).

I've been around for ages (though Claire was here for ages before I joined) and Ten definitely wasn't here then.

I think we spent more time arguing over how many claps there are in the theme tune.

Actually deja has been screwed for months. If you go to power search it informs you with very small print that messages before some time in 1999 are "temporarily" unavailable. This has been the case for some time now though. Not much of a permanant archive.

I never knew them either. I was here when they were but never got to know them.

heh. The group got unbearable at times though. Thats why I frequently dipped out for extended periods. Also the group used to be too high traffic. It has slowed down a bit since then. I don't find myself able to keep up with groups any bigger than this one, and I often do get an atf buildup, meaning some responses to things i've posted go unnoticed.

But as I said thats only half the problem. I can well see how this part of this thread would bore most people except the two of us participating in it, and that most people won't want to read it. Threads like this do make up perhaps a larger part of this group than most, which isn't a bad thing as such, I just hope people don't expect me to read every post, cos I don't :)

OK, now that I've located my heart refribulator and had a chance to reflect on my latest idiocy, I have a little 'splaining to do.

First of all, I realized when I reread my private email to Jon - which all of you saw - that most of the comments I made about fellow posters were pretty positive. I apologize for making the breach in ettiquette of making private nominations public, but I guess Randy and Tina and Doc and Jonathan probably won't be too mad at me.

I do owe an apology to Tennant. He has been the target of several personally insulting threads and it was never my intention to pile on. I did say he probably deserved to win; he's a consistently entertaining poster with some provacative and interesting comments nearly all the time. If I couldn't bring myself to make the actual nomination, it is because I might be in the position of, for example, a Democrat who has been impressed with the expertise of the lawyers arguing their case for the presidency of George W Bush; one can admire the skill and yet question the conclusions drawn. I fully expect he will be a contender anyway, and should be.

Regarding the discussion on my own history with the ATF awards. This was not meant to be bragging or to smack of conceit. The comments can only be understood the context of my private conversation with Jon. In an email that *was* sent privately, I told Jon to take my name out of consideration for the major awards because I've just won too many flippin' times and last year I didn't even feel I deserved to. He asked when I've won major awards and I told him. Unfortunately, I also told you by mistake.

This has been a substantial breech of nettiquette and I apologize.

It's okay..we all make mistakes, and I didn't see anything really nasty about the post.

I myself don't think I want to vote for anyone, I for the most part like everyone and like to hear everyone's unique perspective on things. Pardon me for saying, maybe it's because I wasn't here for the first couple of awards, but it just seems a little clique-ish.

Of course it's cliqued, we're a group with around twenty regular posters. We aren't exactly the Emmys (and if we were we still probably wouldn't nominate Friends) it's just some pointless, mindless (after all I'm doing it) fun. We all like each other . . .. . well maybe that isn't strictly true . . its' just a little recognition, mixed with some team spirit with a touch of unpredictability and some predictability (Claire always wins everything) rolled up in an awards ceremony that will have that certain taste to it (though probably the taste that you get in your mouth after you've just been sick). It's just fun, anything more and I wouldn't be doing it.
