After watching the old episodes in syndication, I've noticed that Chandler and Monica are always hanging off each other (ex. TOW with the gay ice dancer as they leave Ross' apartment.) Why didn't they tell the others when they decided to commit to a relationship? The others are used to their constant closeness.

I was thinking about this the other day; it *did* actually seem out of character, for Chandler at least. I would have thought he'd have been bursting to tell anyone and everyone that he finally had a relationship that looked like lasting more than five minutes and that wasn't Janice. I wonder whose idea it *was* to keep it secret in the first place, anyway?

Personally, I'm glad they did. It added a certain amount of zest to the season five stories... and led to that spectacularly funny scene where Joey figures it out. :)
So yes, maybe it was a little OOC. But trading OOC for great, sustained humor is well worth it, I think.

Well, they aren't use to them being THAT close, as in, Sleeping in the same bed, and not keeping every bit of clothing attchated!
Well, it DID make for an interesting sotry line.
Of course the ever brilliant Writers! I am actually starting to thik the Good people at alt.tv.friends know the characters better than the writers do!

Possibly *because* they were so used to being demonstrative. They'd crossed that line between friendship and lovers, and it's hard to go back. Every time they touch *after* getting together, it means something different than it did before. They might feel awkward about letting on to others how they now feel, because it might make them stop and look at C&M when they do touch. Without telling the others, no one would think anything of them being together. "It's just one of those things/something they do." No hidden meanings. Add a relationship to the equation, and the others might give them too much attention. Look at how awkward Rachel felt when she thought the others were talking about her and Ross having sex, instead of getting married. She didn't want them knowing she'd been in bed with a naked Ross. (How come he *was* naked if she got it together enough to put on her nightgown?)

Chandler and Monica keeping their relationship a secret is not necessarily out of character for either of them. After all, look what *did* happen with Ross and Rachel. Why not keep close for awhile before exposing themselves to the reactions of the other four. Made perfect sense to me.

Well i dont know about that. The other four were pretty supportive of R&R when they decided to go for it (both times), and really hated the idea of them breaking up when they self destructed. Chandler and Monica on the other hand i think wanted to first find out just how serious they were gonna be before springing the news on the everyone. Indeed it was only in TOW everyone finds out that chandler loudly and repeatedly proclaimed his love for Monica. They obviously didnt want a half hearted relationship with a messy breakup at the end that might, and wanted to take their time without any perceived pressures from the group to stay together
