I've been out of the loop with the whole Friends show. So I ask, why do Monica and Chandler have to adopt a child? Is there something reproductively wrong with either one of them?

Yes. Chander's "boys" don't want to get off the barcalounger and Monica has an "inhospitable environment." Per the fertility specialist. ~~~ Kathy
