Which ones funnier ( don't let your great love for Friends influence your decision)
Seinfeld vs. Friends:
Even though Friends is my all time favorite show i'd have to say Seinfeld is funnier. What do you guys think (and i mean the ones that have seen more than one Seinfeld episode!)
Friends by far. More believable (excluding the apartment rent etc). The friendship is better, they don't repeat the same joke over 10 times. Seinfeld has its high points, but doesn't beat friends. Plus Friends has 6 funny characters while Seinfeld only had 1 or 2.

At their best, both shows are hilarious; I don't know that I could say that one is funnier than the other.
I do find that "Friends" wears better in the long run, because its humor is not as negative and cynical as "Seinfeld's." I look forward to "Friends," both new episodes and reruns in syndication, much more than I ever did with "Seinfeld." (On the other hand, I always get a chuckle whenever Jerry sneers in disgust, "Hello, Newman.")
The cast of both shows is excellent, of course, although I often find the character of Kramer to be more grating than funny. Jason Alexander and Julia Louis-Dreyfus were both terrific. George may be one of the all-time great sitcom characters.

Apples and Oranges. Friends is mostly good natured, mindless fun. 99.9% of people over age 12 understand the show. At times, the show can be condescending. It often plays out almost like a teen drama. Seinfeld, on the other hand, was more cynical and negative. I think much of Seinfeld's humor goes over people's heads. Some people understand the humor but don't find it funny. However, a LOT of people don't find it funny simply because they don't understand the humor.
Seinfeld, at its *peak*, was one of the most intelligent comedies in tv history. That show has some of the most clever wordplay I've ever seen on television. It was creative in so many ways, a bunch of sitcoms (including friends) "borrowed" concepts from the show. Too bad Seinfeld started to flounder towards the end of its run.
Friends isn't nearly as intelligent. It's far more vain --- it cares too much about good looking people and their adventures in dating. It's good fun though. Overall, I don't think Friends is nearly as influencial as Seinfeld was. However, the good thing is that at its worst, Friends is still funny. Seinfeld, OTOH.... at its worst, it got REAL bad.
The biggest difference between the two shows? It's simple. Networks love Friends because it's positive, it's good-natured, and it features lots of good-looking people in their 20s (now 30s). It's almost like the show is mass-manufactured on an assembly line for public consumption. Seinfeld was more erratic. It was a show about nothing. Most of the people are in their 40s, it was very cynical... and NBC was very hesitant with the show (at least until the ratings started going up).

I could never stand Seinfeld. Maybe it's just me.
To me it seems like you have two kinds of sircoms/comedies. the one where nothing ever happens and the one where stuff actually happens. On one hand you have shows like Seinfeld and Everybody loves Raymond, where the situations pretty much always remain the same and nothing ever changes.
The you have shows like Friends and Roseanne, which deal with mundane, everyday situtions and one-episode plots, but which also depict events and changes in the life of the characters. You've got silly, dumb plots on Frineds, but you've also got changing jobs, changing relationships, moving around, etc.
I prefer the second kind: the first, while still funny, can get very tedious.

Friends is funnier than Seinfeld. It is not surprising for the contributors to a Friends newsgroup to say that. This much should be obvious. Tennant was making the point was that the public at large find Friends far superior to Seinfeld, as evidenced by their willingness to pay money to watch the former. The point "the public prefers Friends" is more useful than "Friends fans prefer Friends".

I've watched more than one episode of Seinfeld infact I've watched plenty. I love that show but if I had to choose I'll choose Friends. Seinfeld started repeating jokes towards the end. They do that in Friends too but its still enjoyable.

Well I don't think that there is even a contest here! I did like Sienfeld but FRIENDS is the best show ever. You have to look at three important facts when you compare the two shows..... 1. The actors on Friends are MUCH better looking! 2. They are MUCH nicer characters (remember the final episode of Sienfeld, I rest my case). 3. The writing and jokes are MUCH better on FRIENDS. You can relate to their friendships a lot more than the friendships on Sienfeld.
