imagine it's 1980, and you're going to see Empire Strikes Back for the first time, and somebody shouts out "Darth Vader is Luke Skywalker's father!" They've "spoiled" the ending of the movie for you. Such are spoilers, they give away the plot in advance. Some people want to read them, other people don't; that's why it's courtesy to put a chunk of space before a spoiler so people don't read them by accident.
