This week: Make new "friends" and tape the old
Remember when Friends was the show to watch? If you missed Ross and Rachel's first kiss or Phoebe popping out triplets, you were shunned at the watercooler on Friday like a leper in heat.
My, how things have changed. It seems no one really cares about the aging couch-huggers' lives' anymore, especially not Ross (David Schwimmer), the once-lovable lemon who has grown, over the years, into a lemon-soaked paper cut. Friends has lost its spunk, quite possibly because the "twentysomethings" are getting old and tired--and frankly, so is their shtick.
The show desperately needs some kind of shot in the arm, which is why I was thrilled--initially--to hear that Kristin Davis (Sex and the City bride Charlotte) would be tossed into the mix. But, unfortunately, she's only on for one episode (November 16), and her storyline involves yet another one of Joey's frolic-and-flee mating rituals. New girl, same ol' fling.
My hope was renewed again--temporarily--when I heard rumblings about an even better guest star in the works: Goddess of the Creek Katie Holmes. Rumor has it the Dawson's heartbreaker is in talks with Bright, Kauffman and Crane over a four-episode arc later in the season. Fabulous, of course, except for this little horror: They allegedly want her to play a coworker of Rachel's who will end up dating Ross.
Blech.
Don't those silly scribes know the last thing we want to see is cutie- pie Katie kissing that obnoxious putz? Hasn't he done enough damage with his three wives!? Plus, this is just a repeat of last season's age- gap relationship with Elizabeth (Alexandra Holden), which was yawny and creepy.
(Note to Friends writers: Why not try something new that will really shake things up, like Katie playing Rachel's sister [the butchy one we haven't met yet] and hitting on Pheebs?)

If Katie has to kiss Ross, I swear, I'm ridding my television forever of Friends--even if Monica and Chandler actually do tie the knot. But for now, I'll be taping Friends and switching over to the WB's Gilmore Girls for the Thursday 8 p.m. hour. If you haven't caught this new drama yet, I urge you to check it out just once, because you'll probably find it fresher, funnier and much more deserving of your time than those sleepy six. Besides, you'll even get an added bonus: No Cursed.
