Actually she says "[Well] not the second." (It's around minute 20 if you want to check yourself.) I'm not sure which way it was meant to be understood, though. Stupid language, only one word for 1/60 of a minute and the thing succeeding another one.
Btw.: If that scarf was Ross's [only] present for Rachel I'd be as disappointed about his gift selecting skills as I was about this episode. Anti-R&R-ers are of course entitled to mention his success in this area if the present is for someone he is in love with (124 TOW Rachel Finds out), OTOH he (sadly) was a different person back then.

I beg to differ. I believe it is "Well, not this second." (Captioning for the hearing-impaired agrees, btw.) This would indicate that she's not going to return it that very moment, but she probably will return it later.
She could have said, "not now" or "not this minute" or "not tonight." Any of those expressions would have been appropriate (and still funny), but the fact that she said "this second" adds a little nuance to it--indicating that she will exchange it very soon--probably as soon as possible.
Indeed Ross was different then, but so was Rachel. In fact, it was only later that he realized that she returns nearly every gift. I personally wouldn't spend a lot of effort giving someone a gift if I believed it would be returned the next day.
The final help is of course the script, dont hesitate to give me just scripted scene scene (hey, no need of the 8 flashbacks)
