And that's also the reason that in movies and tv shows all U.S. telephone numbers start with 555, which is a nonexisting range. Just in case some fans try to call the number mentioned on screen.

I've heard that once there was a song mentioning a specific telephone number, (not a 555 number) and it actually existed. The owner of that number almost went crazy because he/she kept being called 24/7. (I think it was a song from the early eighties or late seventies.)

I guess they (WB/NBC) registered it, so no-one else could, and used (abused) it to market their merchandise. (as inapropriate as that merchandise can be) See it as protecting the fans against themselves... ;o)

I wonder why they don't just use promotional hotlines? Charging a couple dollars each minute for useless stuff, e.g. the recorded voice from the movie. Could be fun, if you didn't hear the other end of the phoneline in the film itself. It was one of the few good things about �Last Action Hero� to explain stuff like 555.

Actually, there were several people across the US who had that number, each with a different area code. The area code was not part of the song. So, they all got calls. It created a bit of a problem for Tommy TuTone to which, I understand, they "came to some arrangement."
