When did they sign a new contract for a new season in relation to the tapings, what if they had not decieded to do another season, how do you think it would have ended, the same, or some kind of alteration? And was the finale already taped before they signed on a new season?

Yeah, they were signed during the Olympics, I believe the exact date was February 11th. NBC ran their commercial during a commercial break of figure skating, just a few hours after the contracts had been signed.
Had the show ended this year you can bet it would have ended completely different. But I think the producers, the cast and the network were all determined to find a quick solution this time around, so this was never a problem. I think there were at least 5 episodes left to shoot when the contracts were signed.

The contract was signed early in February during the Olympics. (Feb. 9 perhaps.) I'm not certain, but I think they had just completed filming or were about to film 8-18 TO In Massapequa.
