I really don't see why you guys think the what if episode is going to stink...I mean chances are it's going to be VERY funny. We get to see the old ross. We get to see monica fat again, rachel, who has now married barry(She probably looks hilarious), Phoebe as a stock broker, Joey as a successful actor and chandler as a comic writer. Sure it may be a cheap stunt for ratings, but if you think about it, a lot of things could be thought of as a ratings stunt. I personally think it should be funny.

The reason a lot of people think it's going to stink is not because of the episode itself, but because it's suffering from the unfortunate curse of coming *right* after what may be a major R&R landmark, and some people (mainly R&R 'shippers) aren't all that happy that that's seemingly been dropped right when it finally seemed to be going somewhere. Me, I'm just settling into grumbling acceptance now, seeing as we shouldn't expect any different.

Mainly R&R fans, admittedly. :) Quite a few shippers are grumpy because in the 'what if' Friends, Rachel's going after Joey instead of Ross. I personally am not all that bothered about that aspect of it, because they've made loads of jokes about it in the past, I see no real reason why this time should be any different. What I'm personally worried about is that they might use the second half to *really* insult R&R fans by doing something like having C&M get together and R&R not get together in said 'what if' episode, and using it to make a sideswipe 'Look, C&M would have got together anyway and R&R wouldn't, therefore C&M are better' comment. And yes, I do realise it could easily go the other way, and to be honest it *wouldn't* bother me so much if it went the other way, just because us R&R shippers have been messed around so much in the past. I'd like to think they wouldn't do that, but I'm not so sure anymore.
It's all very typical, give us something good, make us think something better is coming, and then "What? We don't remember anything good between them happening." Then of course, if contracts are signed and R&R get yet another cliffhanger, we're sure to be disappointed again by October at the latest.

I think Tina's the only one who is against the idea. I personally am in favor of anything that gets them out of the tiresome rut they are in. Could be fresh and clever. Most of the alternate timeframe episodes are, actually.

I'm not *against* it, I'm just settling into grumbling acceptance because I can't help wondering if they're going to use it to pull yet another double-cross on us R&R fans. If they don't, I will like the idea a lot more - but I can say already that there are a lot of people who are grumpy that Rachel wants to hook up with Joey in the alternate reality (I'm not, coincidentally) - I'm certainly *not* the only one who doesn't like the idea of it, and there are others who like it even less than me. My only beef is that I've got the little voice in the back of my head niggling away - if I'm proved wrong, I will happily watch the episode. But there are people who are offended already just by the fact that Rachel wants Joey in it rather than Ross.
As a fellow shipper (I know I don't usually post, but yesterday I had a R&R marathon and i'm really in "they're so good together" mode...but I have been reading this ng forever) I know where your coming from. If the Reese Whiterspoon thing goes as I imagine, i'll be left with a desire to see more happen, and that's when this "what if" happens. Two weeks later, the writers completely forget anything DID happen, and it's back to nothing. I hated it when they did it after Emily and that divorce, I hated it when they did it after the vegas incident, and i'll hate it after this. The episode does sound interesting though, and I have no concerns about Rachel going for Joey, because I know that's the line the writers won't cross in the not-what-if world.
