It's a theatre convention. Think about it - you can *see* three sides of any room on TV - we see Monica's front door, the balcony window, the bedroom doors. That's 3 sides to a large rectangle (ignoring the bathroom for a second). The 4th side is where the audience and cameras are. In a theatre you have 2 wings and the stage. Everyone faces front to talk to the audience who make the fourth wall. Quite simple.

Because they built the sets that way for those shots. In 224 it's because we are seeing over Janice's shoulder, in order to build up the tension around her identity (lost when you see it on tape with no ad break!). In 502 it's necessary for the sense of the whole scene (to see Joey come in to the bathroom AND see Chandler in the bath, it has to be from that angle). In 113 it's probably just a wider shot of an existing set wall, but in the other 2 it is definitely a side we haven't seen before.

Yuppity, and the rest of the theatrical convention is that the performers pretend that there really *is* such a fourth wall running between the stage & the orchestra pit. This is why the thing that these three scenes do would never be allowed on the comedy "It's Garry Shandling's Show", for their USP was the defiance of this convention: the sets only ever had three walls and the characters (especially Garry) acknowledged the audience.

Yep, in a few shots you can see the left hand side of the main door, but if you slomo it you can glimpse a lot more of the back wall, with posters or pictures on it, and a little table in the corner.

They did this because the sudden entrance of one person through a door, looking at other people in the room, meant that from the viewpoint of one of the people, you would be able to see the fourth wall of the set that is normally invisible for the audience to look through.

They rarely do it because of the extra cost - normally in such cases they stage it so the performers look at each other across the set, not up & down as these three scenes are. What makes it especially neat is that each scene comes from one of the three main sets - 113 is Monica & Rachel's, 224 is Central Perk, and 502 is Chandler & Joey's.

This is what I meant by "completing the set", but of course that was also a subtle hint about the fourth wall completing the set.

Never mind Activia, you were at a disadvantage not having the old episodes on tape. What on Earth did you think when I said that the things we were looking for were about a hundred times bigger than a plastic duck??? :)

Well it does, because out off all those classes I listed, there's only one that the Danes are watching where only the girls attend - the English Lit class. Trouble is, that's got nothing to do with celestial bodies at all. Still, I'll dig out the tape...

..I never noticed before, because I always zero in on Phoebe's face to see her smile when Rachel falls into the trap. Lol! That's amazing, Ariel! :)
