Why is Dr. Green more like Archie Bunker when it came to Rachel's pregnancy? He'd expected his own daugther to get married as a result, but he's never heard oof single parenthood.
If he's such as jerk, how come he'd disowned Jill Green (Rachel's sister played by Reese Whitherspoon) two seasons ago?
Both of your questions seemed to contain their own answers within, which either means you mistyped a word or two or else you were thinking one thing and typing another somewhere, both of which are mistakes everyone has made once in a while.
Your second question was: "If he's such as jerk, how come he'd disowned Jill Green (Rachel's sister played by Reese Whitherspoon) two seasons ago?"
I would assume that the reason why he disowned Jill Green two seasons ago is *precisely* because he is "such a jerk". See what I mean? Where's the mystery? And I'm not sure what that has to do with his grilling of Rachel for not wanting to get married.
Upon further inspection, I misread your first question (also a common mistake), though I was thrown by the word "more" as in "more like Archie Bunker". I kept thinking you were trying to say Dr. Green was more like Archie Bunker in this case than he has been in other similar cases. But since that makes no sense, I realized you were basically saying he was more like Archie Bunker than himself, though I think the word "more" is superfluous - not needed.
So, to your first question, of course we aren't given any insight into the why. We know from TOW Two Parties (222, I think) that he was obsessed with his boat and drove the family crazy with it while he was still married to Rachel's mom. We also see him during season 3 when he has lunch with Rachel and Ross and drives Ross crazy, until he finds out something about Rachel and suddenly becomes friendly to Ross.
As to why he is like that, that's open for speculation. Our answer to that question is probably related to how we ourselves feel about his attitude. Personally, I'm not wild about his attitude, but I think if it is true that Dr. Green never heard of single parenthood, frankly that's not all bad. I have some sympathy for how he might feel about his daughter giving birth to a child without the benefit of marriage. His reasons are not the best in the world (I'm no fan of "there's more to marriage than love" or whatever the line was), but I think to a certain extent his heart is in the right place. --- James Squire - http://members.aol.com/jamess1889
Perhaps, though from what he says in this episode I don't recall any hint of that. I got the impression that it was more just a traditional understanding with him that people who are going to have a baby together should be married to each other. For my part, I don't doubt that it is possible for a single woman to take care of a baby on her own, at least from a logistical standpoint, and even do a decent job of raising the child, though in the particular case of Rachel I do have my doubts ;-)
It seems to me that Ross and Dr. Green have more in common with each other than they think. They both think that Ross and Rachel should get married becase she is pregnant with his child. Remember when Ross proposed in the episode TOW Rachel Tells... (well he didn't technically propose). I guess that Ross and Dr. Green both have a traditional view of marriage and pregnancy!
My sister went through the same thing, only different, and she's still a member of my family. Take my advice: NEVER marry a Marine cause they're assholes!
