on joey

I don't know if this is regarded as spoilery or not, since the relevant plotline has already started in the US, but just to be safe.... Spoilers up to, say, 8-13, regarding an epiphany of Joey's - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

After unwittingly reading a spoilery article about Friends in a local newspaper (UK) about Rachel 'n Joey, I came online to prove to myself that it couldn't be true. Now I find that Joey suddenly has feelings for Rachel. The feeling here seems to be generally for a J/R (R/J?) pairing, but I just can't buy it and it's spoiling my enjoyment of the show. This may sound quite strange but can someone please convince me of it?

I just find it very unbelievable that after 7-8 years of being in close contact with Rachel, only now does Joey develop feelings for her, very abruptly. I read the article that someone posted here (thank you) about how Matt LeBlanc himself has reservations about it because he saw Joey as having a brother-sister relationship with Rachel.

I love Joey's character, and Rachel is great, but Joey's epiphany of sorts just comes too much out of the blue for me, especially when they've had a lot of 'bonding' moments in the past that never went past platonic.

If someone can tell me how Joey's sudden change of heart can happen believably, after all many here seem to be for r/j, I'd be very grateful!

While I'm against a J&R romance, I think they made Joey's feelings for her logical. With Rachel being pregnant and vulnerable, Joey can protect her and be the MAN. And with them living together, he gets to know her even more now than before.

Besides, Monica and Chandler knew each other for a lot longer than J&R, and they didn't get together until much later, so it wouldn't be out of the logical realm that J&R have feelings for one another.

As the season has progressed, we get glimpses of Joey's protective nature and his sweet, compassionate disposition. These are traits that he has had all along, but they are written into the fabric of the latest season very well. I have to compliment the writing staff for their handling of the issue. I was very much against it at first, but it was handled with such tact and caring that I have accepted it. I would still prefer a Ross/Rachel relationship, but Joey and Rachel will be fine no matter which direction the show may lead.

I think you will enjoy this 8th season as it unfolds. IMO it has been the best written season thus far (especially TOW The Videotape).

Hi, I'm an California girl and I've seen the recent shows. (I never miss one) I know the Joey and Rach thing seems unconvincing as a plot line righ now but just wait till you see it. The two show about it I have seen so far are so hilarious and geniusly written. Rachel hasn't found out about Joey liking her so far. If she does find out she still might not feel the same way about him so the story of Ross and Rach might go on. It's funny to see Joey actually feeling like he is in love with someone although I think it would be great if it was Phoebe he was falling for. I think we'd all like to see that. Anyway, I just wanted to assure you that those episodes were very well done and way funny.

Most of the people I know seem to think that they would be a good pair because they are both somewhat dim-witted. But I think that Joey has a sweetness that Phoebe would just be unable to tap into. I find her a bit abrasive and I can't imagine her in any 'real' relationship. Maybe people think that her personality coupled with Joey's (former?) womanizing would somehow cancel each other out. Or he would continue to be a womanizer and she just wouldn't care.

I think that I like the fact that they seem to be fleshing out Joey's character a lot, probably in order to make him 'worthy' of Rachel. It is revitalizing the show.
