Joey S1-01 & 02 (UK)

No spoilers beyond these episode please, from US fans or downloaders.

Well, my expectations weren't that high, so I wasn't disappointed.

It was amusing enough - Joey was the same as he was in Friends - just as dumb (sorry Tennant), but he lacks a foil, unlike Friends where he could always rely on Chandler.

I'm not that keen on his sister Gina - too pushy, not to mention a different actress/personality as when she briefly appeared in Friends.

I don't see where the nephew is going to fit in. or indeed the blonde neighbour, since she is married & therefore unavailable.

I guess we'll just have to see where the show goes over the next few weeks.

Incidentally, it pulled 4.1m viewers, one of C5's highest ever figures.

Yeah, I wasn't expecting much either, there were some excellent little bits, like right at the start where he went to the wrong air port, and then the bit with the cameras (sort of like the little bits he had in Friends), but apart from that, IMO it wasn't anything special

I felt it was like a very average episode of Friends when I saw the Joey pilot. Totally ran out of steam with nowhere to go that I cared about.

In my TV guide it says from him, allegedly*, that they have enough material for the next ten years, just like Friends did(!)

(* well, the interview was with him, apparently, but then I don't believe that Page 3's Nikkala was really commenting on the G7 summit, etc :)

I understood the latter was due to be changed to a different actress (for no reason) and her character made single. Either way, it seems a lame plot device.

Anyone know how it's done in the US? It's still running in the US but with the amount of sway from Warner and the 'Friends' brand, that'll guarantee its slot for at least one series. If it goes beyond that, it'll be around for a few more years.

They'd hope so, given the endless promotion its had, with Matt Le Blanc featuring in most of the Five idents I've seen in the past two weeks.

Those bill board ads are even in the gym - the one with joey with arms folded is at ground level in the changing rooms - drying my tranclements whilst Mr Le Blank looks on is disconcerting at best.

Yes, but even after Joey & Chandler stopped being room-mates, they were still neighbours.

I wouldn't know about that - this was the first time I'd tuned to C5 in ages!

My biggest problem with the Joey concept is that you see LeBlanc in every scene. In Friends there are like two or three treads. Joey and Chandler are doing one thing, Ross, Monica and Rachel are doing something else and Phoebe is walking from one thread to another.

In Joey there is only one story, Joey's! I watch it every week but I'm reluctant.

Wow! The first episode in the States pulled high figures (18M+) too but it took a nosedive (10M-) afterwards, maybe because of the competition from other stations. The British public may be the benchmark, who knows.

I'm interested to know what the appreciation was. Are those figures measured in the UK?

The number of total viewers is extrapolated from a sample panel, all we get are an estimated number of viewers.

Bear in mind that no everyone in the UK can receive Channel 5 though.

I'm going to agree with Owen; there doesn't seem much point in this show - apart from cashing in on the Friends brand.

We've had ten years of jokes about Joey pulling women, ten years of jokes about Joey failing auditions, do we really need any more?

Which means if this is ever going to be more than a cheap Friends cash-in, it's going to have to rely on the new characters, and - judging by the two eps I've seen - that's a problem.

Joey's agent is very annoying and not at all funny!

The blond neighbour seems very bland, and as someone else said, a bit of a Monica clone. I assume her (invisible) husband will somehow go away so Joey can at least try to sleep with her, otherwise why is she there?

The nephew is clearly supposed to be the new Chandler, except not as funny and with a lot of Ross-like geekiness. The thing that bothers me about him is that most of the second episode was about him being too much of a nerdy geek to pull women, but the actor playing him is just too good looking for this to be believable.

I don't remember Gina Tribbiani's appearance in Friends. Was there ever a mention of Joey having a sister who had a baby at 16? So far, she's the best new character (IMHO), but her always being around is going to get a bit silly.

All in all, the first couple of eps were OK, but no more that OK. Hopefully it will get better.

BTW, you can't see the stars in LA (or any other big city) because all the light in the foreground makes it impossible to see the stars.

The series gets better after Joey gets a job. Up till then it seems to have no direction or firm basis.
