809-The One With the Rumor

I thought this was an ok episode, Brad Pitt had a lot of funny lines, but he also looked really out of place up there at times. I was disappointed they went back to the sitcom method of pulling out various secrets from the past that we never heard about, like they did 704-TOW Rachel's Assistant and 718-TOW The Cheap Wedding Dress to name a couple. It just seems like a lazy way to get a laugh. For all we know, they could have said Ross made out with a donkey while they're at it! I mean, he's already hit the cleaning lady in college, and the librarian in high school.

Monica was actually the best in this episode, she seemed like a perfect mediator in all of the fighting going on.

Joey had a nice storyline trying to eat the whole turkey, but haven't we had enough episodes that involve him eating a lot? I did like Chandler's line at the end saying that "the President should be calling you any minute now" for eating the turkey.

Phoebe and Chandler had a funny storyline in the beginning, but they ended the storyline 10 minutes into the show, and afterwards they were just standing around. Phoebe has been so underused this season that it's getting ridiculous. But I did like her lines with Brad Pitt..."Take off your shirt and tell us about it."

It was an ok episode, probably one that would have looked good last season, but not really a good one compared to the first 8 episodes this season.

Even though I usually don't like the "special guest star" episodes very much, the whole "pretending to watch the ballgame to get out of helping in the kitchen" was so perfect -- in a capturing a slice of reality type way -- that this episode deserves more than just a C+.

I was proud of the writers for checking ahead on who would be playing. I seem to recall an episode a few years ago (possibly the one with the football game?) where the wrong team was playing against the Dallas Cowboys. At least they got half of it right that year.

Unfortunately, they had no way of dealing with the vintage uniforms that were used in the actual Green Bay/Detroit game Thursday--the Packers' uniforms were circa 1939, and Detroit's were from somewhere in the 1950's I think. But still, I appreciated the effort.

As for the winner of the game, I got the impression, based on the crowd noise when the television was turned off that the game they were "watching" wasn't really over yet. So, the fact that they picked the wrong winner was irrelevant, since they were making it up.

Well, the other traditional Thanksgiving Day game is Dallas vs. [some team], so getting the Cowboys right is the easy part, while getting who they play on a particular year correct requires researching that season's NFL schedule.

They shouldn't have had the score on the corner of the screen, though, because seeing an actual score was very misleading. (And real games don't "always" have the score displayed, so there's nothing wrong with omitting it.)

They weren't even paying attention to the game, so it was "over" whenever it was time to eat.

The Lions always host a 12:30 EST Thanksgiving game and the Cowboys always host a 4:00 EST Thanksgiving game. The opponent always varies.

Green Bay was the Lions' opponent from 1951 through 1963, but before this year they hadn't played them since 1986, and only twice since 1963.

Guys, it was a *joke*. I was just being funny. I was actually a bit impressed that they had the two teams right, and of course they couldn't been sure about who won because this episode was filmed way before Thanksgiving Day.
