Well, as usual, Lee has decided to hit another pothole. He has an infection in his brain, Staph infection to be precise. He got it from the tube inserted into the ventricles for drainage of his head. They expected this might happen since the maximum period of time this vetriculostomy stays in is about 10 days. It has now been three weeks. They said it was just simple staph found on the skin, so it likely just entered from his head around the tube opening. Now, though, he has been fighting fevers for two days of 102. I have been applying ice packs and soaking rags in ice water and applying around major veins,arteries, to help cool him off. The tylenol doesn't always work really well. They decided since he is having so much trouble with the fevers and infection, that they need to remove the drain and put in a new, clean one. They have also put him on two different antibiotics, one of which they inject directly into his head via needle. On the positive side.... He has been sitting up more frequently in a cardiac chair, and in bed (as far as it will go up), and today they removed his staples from his head, all 60 something of them. He is growing all his hair back, little stubs at this point. He hasn't been too coherent through all this fever, yesterday or today. He isn't totally out, but not responsive to me or really anyone. He is sucking on a sponge of Snapple cranberry juice and that is a real treat for him. We were going to try to let him eat some applesauce but that looks to be out since the surgery will be around 4:00 PST. Looks like tomorrow is a major surgery day for everyone in ASC! I will be praying for all those people tomorrow as well as Lee. Well, at least with what little strength I can muster for them as I will be concentrating mostly on Lee. Had a really hard morning today, but he became a little more relaxed and therefore so did I this afternoon. I was even able to eat lunch and dinner. Now if I could only sleep! I am trying to find out where to get counseling.....and maybe some kind of sleeping pills....
