If you're serious, Tennant, the novel is "Shirley" by Charlotte Bront�, written in 1849. Shirley was originally a surname, but was chosen by Mr and Mrs Keeldar in the expectation of a boy, yes. It wasn't really a masculine name either, as it wasn't a particularly popular name. Tracy, however, was, as was Clare.

Yes. The benefits of learning ASCII codes early in life (thanks to Clive Sinclair!). I always use Alt and the various numbers to get such things, so they *shouldn't* corrupt. ;) (Alt 171 is very useful for e-mail!)

Tennant, if you'd read the post carefully, the "he" in that sentence is Christ, to whom you'd referred in your previous definition. I don't tend to capitalise He in sentences, even for Christ, but perhaps that would have made it clearer. (Either way, the actual sex of Veronica in that sentence would be unknown if anything.) I don't believe you seriously think that St Veronica carried a cross or went to Calvary. :) And my Collins dictionary makes it clear Veronica was female.
