All i know is that monica and ross are part jewish, they celebrate christmas and chanaka(sp?).

I think the explanation of Ross and Monica Geller being part-Jewish is that either their dad, Jack, or their mom, Judy, is 100% Jewish, and the other parent is a gentile.

I could be wrong you know.

I presume Phoebe, Chandler and Rachel are christian too but I dunno what exactly they are. But it's funny on the other hand Ross being jewish but having gotten married to Emily by a christian priest in a christian church. Any clue on that one?

Well, in the Jewish religion, a child is born the religion of their mother - if only one Geller parent is Jewish, I'm pretty sure it's Jack because Geller is a Jewish name AND Judy served ham once, etc... If Jack IS the Jewish one, then Monica and Ross aren't really Jewish by birth which would explain it. They are half Jewish, but as per the religion, they wouldn't be recognized as being Jewish because Judy isn't Jewish.

I'd qualify that a little. In the United States many Jews don't keep kosher. My college roommate was Jewish. His favorite sandwich was a bacon cheeseburger. I guess I'd say Judy serving ham might not mean anything at all. That said, I'd still guess Jack is Jewish and Judy not.

The Gellars are definitely Jewish - cf Ross' hat in the opening sequence and, could Mrs Gellar be any more stereotyped as the 'Jewish Mother'.???
