This question has probably been a thousand times, but how in the world do these people afford to live in NYC?? Joey and Phoebe are basically jobless. I don't see how Chandler and Monica can afford such a nice apartment, eventhough they have a fairly well paid job. By the way, what is Ross' job anyway??

Monica and Chandler live in Monica's grandmother's apartment, and Phoebe lives in her grandmother's old apartment. Joey has basically lived off of Chandler, and now that he's a regular on a soap opera he's probably supporting himself. And I guess Ross pays for his apartment with his job at the museum and his teaching salary.
Oh, and it's a TV show. :)

chandler has a pretty high up there job and monica is a head chef- if those two together can't afford a nyc apt. i dont' know who can. also they live in the west village - its a little cheapter there

Ross isn't at the museum anymore, but he has a good professorship.
Keep in mind that Monica, Chandler and Joey are likely in a rent-controlled building. Monica's apartment is still in her grandmothers name, which probably keeps the rate down as well.
Of course, this was probably more of a problem when she was only a suese chef (spelling?) and Rachel was a coffee-house waitress, but now Monica is the head-chef, and Chandler's job is apparently only slightly less than a vice president position. (Have you ever noticed the size of his office and the view!)
Phoebe's place is also large, and I see that situation has a bit more of a stretch, but since that place was *her* grandmother's, it might also be rent controlled just like Monica's, and still in her grandmother's name to keep the rent low there too.

As in with rent control they can only raise the rent X dollars in Y amount of time. Whereas if the apartment is empty they can re rent it at the going rate. So the owner can't come in and say okay your neighbor, who just moved in, pays $600 more for the same size apartment so I'm raising your rent that amount. That is how it works in California, but I have no idea about New York.

Rent is rarely paid in person. Usually a large rental agency handles the maintenance and collection of rents. So Monica could purchase a money order and mail the rent. Or she could take cash to the office. Older tenants are not as mobile and could require a younger relative to run their errands. Basically as long as the rent is being paid on time and there are no complaints from neighbors they don't investigate.

Isn't he just a lecturer? Usually being a professor at Universities in the United States means you not only teach more than one course, but you are involved in research. I don't think Ross has been teaching long enough to acquire the title and position of Professor. I think he is just teaching a course or two there.

Well, you can go off of plot details, like if they have good enough jobs or whatever, but what it really comes down to is that they need big sets to make the show look the best. It's a lot easier to work on a big set than a little cramped one, obviously. :)
