I've never really liked the comedy of frustration - instead of laughing it just makes my groin tighten. It was good to see that C+M continued their affair, but they failed to compensate for a hideous Emily, and the beginning of the end for a hapless Ross.

Yep - dull yeti, dull mink, and further destruction of Ross.

The health inspector story was lame, the regatta gala story only makes sense if Rachel Green is somewhat less attractive than Jennifer Aniston, and Ross was as irritating to me as he was to his new roomies. Only the sublime subplot about Joey's fort saved this from a lower rating.

Oh, I probably enjoyed this more than you, since I wasn't offended by the incest plot, and the fireball stuff was fun. Below average though.

What was great about it? Only the chemistry between Joey & Rachel and the story about Phoebe meeting her father lifted this unfunny episode.

You're right about the sofa, but I hated the cop even worse, for I took an instant dislike to him, and knew it would not be long before he hurt Phoebe. Joey was very good however, especially when he told Monica that she smelt like a meadow, and it was so sad after Rachel turned him down. Great foreshadowing, but weighed down by the crap.

What can I say about a story where the highlight is Monica telling Rachel that she stinks? That it was *marginally* better than Ross failing his faithful friend, or everyone at the party preferring ice topped with ice to real food & booze? Dire, dire, and dire.

One star.

The margarita thieves were quite good, especially when Monica kept putting her foot in it with Rachel, but I already told you what I think about Gary stories, and Phoebe had absolutely nothing to do.

Two stars.

The best way to sum up the final Gary story is I Told You So. Rachel was kinda cute, but the title story was not the contest I hoped for.

One star.

Yeah, well both Joey & Phoebe were COS, downgrading Chandler & Monica who weren't much fun but had a good ending, and Ross & Rachel who were a lot of fun, but had an ending that was spoilt for me in advance.

Two stars.

A sure sign of poor episodes. I bet you don't need to refer to the episode guide for 514 "TOW Everyone Finds Out", do you?

By the way, that wasn't "ice topped with ice," it was SnoCones ... crushed ice with flavored syrups poured over it. They're sort of a summery, childhood treat, and I can see where they could be a hit at a party (although I agree that it's silly to suggest that people would ignore the "real food" completely just to make Monica look bad).

Didn't you read the rest of my post? If so, you should already know my POV, since I disliked 501 "TOA Ross Says Rachel" and 506 "TOW the Yeti" because of how the writers were destroying Ross in Season 5.

Furthermore, in the same post, I also criticised Chandler, Monica, Emily, Rachel, Gary, Monica, Rachel, Gary, Gary, Joey and Phoebe, so why aren't you accusing me of hating them? (You'd be right about me disliking Gary). The thing is, Priya & I were discussing the episodes that I did not like in Season 5, not the episodes I did like.

You'd have a better argument if it had been Ross himself who was asked to try out for a commercial (perhaps for hair gel? :-) Then you could make a case for him giving up what would be just a lark for him in order to help Joey. But the audition wasn't his to give up. It was his son's. A parent is unlikely to give up an opportunity for his child to help a friend, particularly when there's no guarantee that the friend would actually be helped. (As we saw, Joey would not have gotten the part anyway, although I did think that "noodle soup" business was a remarkably silly device by the writers.)

Besides, Ben has a mother, who as I recall was quite excited about the audition. I don't think Carol would have appreciated Ross giving up Ben's opportunity to do a favor for Joey.

If you want to criticize Ross for something in this episode, by all means criticize him for gloating in front of the other parents and children who weren't selected. That was unsportsmanlike. See? I can criticize Ross, too, when he clearly deserves it; but I like him, so I give him the benefit of the doubt in ambiguous situations. My point was that you seemed not to do so.

The other Friends will make guest appearances during sweeps months. I'm serious. They are talking about giving Joey a spinoff, and he probably really is the best bet. This bodes badly for R&J fans, because Aniston is done with sitcoms for awhile, and she won't be coming with him.

Phoebe moves to Minsc to be with David.

I don't buy for a minute that this storyline was intended as a "learning experience" for Joey. Joey had about as much experience courting women as Ross did when he went after Rachel. I mean, wouldn't it have been such a waste of plots of the 1st and 2nd seasons if Rachel never reciprocated Ross's love? Unreciprocated love might work in a drama, but not in a comedy. I really think the "f"s are going to be disappointed come the season finale.

For all those who think Ross has been beaten up lately, check out this season and look how many times Joey is "painfully stupid" in this season. Painful to watch, and painful that the writers couldn't come up with more clever ways to portray his lack of knowledge.

Honestly, Ross being the father is now almost an afterthought in the press once the Joey/Rachel storyline began. Now the likely climax of both major storylines will occur in May, which will no doubt produce the highest ratings ever for the show.

b. 9 seasons gives enough time to tie up loose ends properly.

AARP stands for American Association of Retired People. You become eligible once you turn 50.

I really do like Ross, and he has been beaten up too much in my opinion. But just for the sake of predictability, I will be disappointed if the writers let him walk off with Rachel. Jennifer is the prize in most men's eyes, and Ross had his chance for 7 years and blew it. Unless Joey turns into a complete ass, he deserves to end the show with her.

Ross is the father for a reason. It'll be a happy occasion for both Ross and Rachel when Rachel gives bearth. I don't think she'll have Joey at one end as her lover and Ross at the other end as the father of her baby when she's in the delivery room, that's just plain weird. The 9th season (for RnR that is) will probably evolve around their daughter, if the writers want to portray RnR as good parents they'll have to show them with their baby quite a lot. The fact that that Joey has developed feelings for Rachel, that Rachel has moved out and that he has told Ross about his feelings for Rachel all happened in 4 episodes is a good indication of what the intention of the storyline was/is ;-).

f, season 8 is nice but it relies too much on the ongoing storyline instead of on the good comedy.
