This is a hypothetical episode. Nothing in this show actually happened.

i realize it is hypothetical and never happened, but, hypothetically, whouldn't she still have been thin?

No, because one of the hypotheticals was what if Monica had never lost all that weight.

There was a hypothetical for each character in TOT Could Have Been, all combined into one episode.

Chandler: Kept at his attempts to becoming a writer for Archie comics
(and possibly other comics), instead of his data-related job.
Joey: Never got fired from his "Days of Our Lives" job.
Monica: Never lost all that weight.
Phoebe: Became of Wall Street stockbroker instead of a masseuse.
Rachel: Never ran out on her wedding.
Ross: Never got divorced from his wife (she never found out she was a
     lesbian).

This was a hypothetical episode but in the Friends world, apparently one can gain and lose a lot of weight in a years time. The flashback episodes make it look like Mon lost all that weight in a year or so. In Season seven, Chandler talks about an ex-girl friend who gained 150 pounds during the summer...

No dear, she gained 145 pounds between two summers...

CHANDLER: Julie Graff, my camp girlfriend. We went out for two summers,
and then I broke up with her, 'cause she came back the third
summer and she'd gotten really fat. (706)

Also, 615/616 established that young Monica must have been eating continuously, she did not suffer from a low metabolism.

So, that would be under a year's time since the next summer would start sooner than the end of the previous summer. (It could be late August until early July, for example.)

It's still a lot of weight to lose without gastro-bypass surgery or something similar. When you consider that 3,500 calories roughly equals one pound of fat, to lose 150 pounds you would have to lose almost 2 pounds (or 7,000 calories) per week. If a normal woman eats 2,000 calories per day, that's 14,000 calories per week. So, this "normal" woman would have to live on a diet of 1,000 per day for a year. Most medical people suggest that no one ever eat less than 1,200 calories per day.

Indeed, but still a lot longer than one summer.

How long does a typical summer camp go on for, anyway?

It was Julie who gained 145 pounds, we don't know how much Monica lost.

Summer camp can be just about any length. Some camps might be just a week, while others might be six or eight weeks. Without doing a lot of reasearch, my gut-feel would lean toward the shorter end of the spectrum, a week or two. I went to camp for a week, although it seemed like two.

Oh yeah. My bad.

Okay, so that's about 3 pounds per week. On the principle that it's easier to put on weight than to take it off, that 145 pounds must be feasible.

No worries. :)
