syndication

Hey,

First I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Joe, and I became a fan of "Friends" when it went into syndication a few years ago. I live in the NYC area and get the WB11, and so I get Friends 2 nights a week from M-F, and once a weekend on Sunday. I've quickly caught up on all the episodes since last summer, when I became a fan, however reading over the scripts for the episodes I have missed, and the episodes I have seen, I've noticed that some scenes have been cut out of the show. Now being a long time fan of "The Simpsons" I'm not stranger to the horrors of syndication, however I was shocked when I watched the episode where Joey found out about Monica and Chandler, because they left ouf a very important line about how Chandler saw "Donal Trump waiting for an elevator." That was a very important plot point, and I was surprised they just cut it out of the show. I know they have to cut parts of the show out, but watching the syndicated episodes and then reading the scripts, I can't believe how many of the important plot elements they cut out of each show, not to mentoin some of the funniest gags. It seems to me there are a lot of other, meaningless scenes which they could cut out instead.

My question is, who decides what gets cut out of syndicated episodes and what stays? And furthermore, since NBC only shows episodes from the most recent season, is there any available place where I can find episodes in their entirity? I have also heard that in the UK and elsewhere besides the US, that entire seasons of "Friends" are avilable on VHS. Why is this not the case in the US and do they ever plan to release entire seasons on video in the US in the near future? Seeing as how this is the biggest market and home base for "Friends," it would only make sense?

Sorry I don't know who decides what is cut out but I live in the UK and the version we got where Joey found out, the 'Donal Trump' waiting for an elevator was included, I think. As for the fan base thing, I think you'll be suprised by how big Friends is over here, and yeas, they probably should release them in America, it would get in a lot more money which they could use to pay the actors for a Series 9. Just give them what they want. Sorry I couldn't help though.

The reason they don't sell entire season of Friends in the US, is because that would lower the number of people watching Friends on syndication (according to the network operators). Personally I doubt that would have much impact, since only the real fans buy the tapes. And as one owning all the DVD box sets (I live in Europe), I certainly would watch reruns on tv even though I have all the eps available. There's still the 'laziness' factor (turning on the TV is less effort than grabbing the right dvd and start that!). And the 'surprise' factor (you don't actively choose an ep, you get what's being aired).
