Joey Deacon on the other hand, was featured regularly on Blue Peter when I was a kid. He was disabled in some form or another (I forget), and I think that by making him a regular 'guest' on Blue Peter, they figured that kids would develop some sympathy and understanding for disabled people in general. In practice though, it just meant that instead of kids calling each other "spaz", the term "joey", replaced it for a good number of years.

Well, I liked it. A lot of vitriol seems to stem from it being a spin-off, as a standalone its no worse than a lot of other sitcoms or indeed later Friends episodes.

But the later Friends episodes were so lacking. I watched the pilot and there was probably one laugh in it, at most. The rest was so 'seen it all before' that I didn't see why I should waste my time seeing it again.

Oh this is nothing to do with it being a spin-off, but on the basis of whether it was funny or not. In the entire run (24 eps as I recall) I can't have laughed more than 8 times. I wanted to like it, I really did because Joey was my favourite character, but I think he worked in "Friends" because he had others he could be silly against. The whole of "Joey" seems to have been dragged to his level so he no longer shines.
