901 "TOW No One Proposes"

While the Bings hid in a hospital closet trying to start their family, Judy Geller gave Ross a ring, expecting him to propose to the mother of his child. But Joey found the ring on the floor, Rachel assumed he was proposing - and so, she accepted him...

Yet as Rachel stretches out her ring finger, Ross bursts in, followed by his father & his friends. Ross can't get a moment alone with Rachel, but he finds the time to confide in Phoebe that he was planning to ask Rachel a question, without ever saying what it was.

However, Joey explains himself clearly to Chandler, and he naturally assumes that Ross was about to ask Rachel to marry him. Chandler tells his best friend that what he's done will really kill Ross, because he really loves - to propose!

When Rachel reveals she's just got engaged, Phoebe assumes the lucky guy is Ross; while Joey charges after Ross, but unaccountably never manages to speak with him.

Left alone, Rachel fetches the ring to place it on her finger herself, but when Joey comes to speak with her, a nurse brings baby Emma to be breast-fed, and the poor guy doesn't know where to put himself as the two women discuss all the intimate details...

Monica is still desperate for a baby, but Chandler is too tired to oblige her. However, when he offers to skip foreplay, she readily agrees. Jack Geller hears strange noises coming from the closet, so naturally he opens the door to have a perve, and his just desserts are to see his darling daughter having sex, albeit with her husband.

Chandler & Monica hurriedly dress themselves, stuffing their underwear in their pockets: he tells his father-in-law that they weren't doing it for fun, and she adds that they're trying to get pregnant. Of course Jack's reaction is to start giving them illustrated advice on the best sexual positions, for both pleasuring his daughter & fertilising her.

Ross denies to Phoebe that he proposed, but she won't believe him, so he reveals that he was going to ask Rachel for a date. However, they see the ring being worn by a sleeping Rachel, and he starts to wonder if he did propose after all, but somehow forgot about it.

Rachel explains to Monica, who immediately understands, yet yells at her that what she did was inappropriate; and what's worse, Joey's ring is bigger than Chandler's! Rachel confesses that although Joey is a sweet guy who loves her, she doesn't really want to marry him.

When a confused Ross confronts Rachel about the engagement, she says if he didn't propose, then Joey did - but Joey denies it, and explains all. Rachel suddenly realises she had imagined him asking her to marry him, so if he didn't propose, then Ross did - but Ross denies it!

What emerges from all this verbal chaos is that Rachel is focused on her baby, and she's happy to find that Ross wants to stick around. But when he notices that she's continuing to wear the ring, he is greatly disturbed to realise that she did accept Joey as her husband.

Plotwise, this was a confused episode, with far too much to-and-fro between hospital rooms for my taste. As four of the friends totally misunderstood who said what, it was up to the other story to redress the balance with some light relief, aided by old hand Elliott Gould.

But oh, what a disappointment that story was, since not only was it yet another repetition of the closet sex piece from last season; but also it was carried out in such questionable taste, that jokes about fondling genitals & stimulating nipples paled by comparison.

So I hated this episode then? Curiously no, for somehow the main cast managed to rise above their material by force of sheer hard work, to deliver reasonably good comic performances - especially Lisa Kudrow as Ross's hapless confidante, and Matt LeBlanc as poor lovelorn Joey caught in a situation largely of his own making.

Is the title correct to say "No One Proposes", shouldn't it be "No-one Proposes"? Or is there some subtle play on words here?

I'm not going to name names, but all you people out there who got the resolution of the cliffhanger wrong, you know who you are. Just as I predicted, Ross was not coming to propose - he brought lilies because he knows Rachel likes them, not because of the planetarium story.

Also, Joey did indeed do the decent thing, and try to explain to Ross, he didn't attempt anything underhanded. As for the certain person who first said that the whole gang would burst into the room, well done!

Did you notice that it is still "Courteney Cox Arquette" in the title sequence? There was speculation some while ago that the actress was planning to revert to her original stage name.

Plus those titles lasted the full 45 seconds, and the whole episode was over 23 minutes long; so have we gone back to before Season Six, when NBC slashed the running time to squeeze in more commercials?

Was there a continuity error with Ross's flowers? It seems to me that some of them were of a darker variety than last season.

Do we guys really play with ourselves while we're asleep?

Did you enjoy seeing that Chandler is able to understand Joey again, after he was so dense in 813 "TOW Chandler Takes a Bath" about what he got up to with Monica in London?

How come Jack was looking at the wrong baby, when he had no trouble looking at the right baby just moments before?

Phoebe describes herself as the Puppet Master of the group - which is just what I've been saying about her for years, and few believed me, especially when she manipulated Chandler into proposing to Monica.

And as she comforts a confused Ross, doesn't Phoebe look really hot?

According to the episode summary on NBCMV, "Joey can't help but sneak a peek as Rachel tries unsuccessfully to nurse her baby", which seems to me to be most inaccurate. Joey did his level best to *avoid* seeing what was going on in front of him, no matter how exciting it sounded, while Ross just waded in and had a good look.

When Rachel explained that her ring was better than Monica's because of "Days of Our Lives", the implication was that's how Joey can afford it. But did this betray she only likes him because he's a soap star?

And why didn't Monica recognise her grandmother's ring? Girls see that kind of stuff, and this ring was so spectacular boys would notice it.

How come with the whole episode being set in the hospital, Phoebe did not once go to see her new boyfriend, Cliff Burnett? Isn't this guy supposed to be like the Big New Thing for the new season?

Did Monica say "Aunt Liddy" or "Aunt Lillian"? Because if it was Liddy, she'll be a ninth aunt for Monica & Ross.

And why does Monica say that they'll get $5 each?

To compensate for the fart joke, wasn't it good to see Jack sharing a sweet moment with his daughter, after his little faux pas about Ben?

But how come Jack did forget his grandson? Could it be that Ross never brings the boy to see his paternal grandparents? And if so, what grandparents does he have? Not George & Adelaide, unless they finally came to terms with Carol's sexuality, so Susan's parents?

Monica gave piano recitals? What does this mean? Is she really good, or was it merely one of those junior school types of thing?

Can anyone explain what Chandler meant, when he quipped that the conversation about frequent sex whenever Judy was ovulating was how he got the bullet hole in his head?

What did you think of the dirty old man jokes? Ross touching himself in public, Jack farting, and Joey relating breast feeding to lesbian porn? Then all three listening to closet doors? And then the writers literally threw in the kitchen sink, as Monica's father demonstrated sexual positions to her? Was this good, bawdy, gross-out humour; or was it a lapse of taste, a lowering of standards?

No spoilers PLEASE from anyone who has already seen episodes 902-903.

While I wouldn't phrase it all that colourful, I do agree with the basic statement that despite the script for 901 being horrible it still was a pretty good episode for some weird reason. Maybe because I was expecting one of the worst Friends episodes ever, it didn't disappoint me that much

Think 801... It seems to be his thing to say when he is confronted with something he *really* doesn't want to hear. And the two times we've seen him use this expression it involved something sexual and his parents or in-laws.

Jack was. Joey wanted to. Ross turned away disgusted with his father. Or did I miss something?

It made me think of all the teen flicks, American Pie and the whole rest of those... Hopefully it's not setting the standard of comedy we have to expect from this season.

Well, the confusion didn't last the whole episode, just while Ross was on - Joey & Chandler and then Rachel & Monica were very clear. But you are so right about the closet, it was bad enough that they repeated the story in 824, but to do it a third time in 901 was too much.

I've never seen "Survivor", so I wouldn't know, but don't they play the boring stuff against "Friends", and then the 'exciting' Who Gets Thrown Off The Island half-hour afterwards?

LOL, that reminds me of seeing the most fantastic fireworks display in Paris, and when I went in to work at the Aerospatiale plant the next day, I asked my French colleagues if it had been a special occasion. They all looked blank, and then one of them suddenly had an idea, and he told me that it was probably the "sound and light".

I was really puzzled until I thought to translate it back (my French isn't as good as my German, but it's passable) into "Son et lumiere", which is what we call it in English. The point is I know those treats were not sexual since we have them too, but we do not call them the fully English phrase "Children's Surprise", but "Kinder Surprise".

Here we go again!!

I must say I was confused with where everyone was, and where were Rachel's parents!?!

The storylines weren't that great - but I suppose there is a limit to what you can do in a Hospital. If you look at all the hospital episodes, the sotrylines havn't been the best.

I must say - nipple jokes aside, there were some good performances. The one line that really cracked me up was "You know how Ross liked to propose!"

"The One where nothing much happens" more like!

You always end up proving me wrong! There are a few mingers in there, but really I meant episode based entirely in the hospital, such as Ben's birth, Phoebe and the triplets, and Emma's birth. There are restrictions to what strotylines you can have in a hospital.

Yeah...it was like the good old Chandler days. He just seems to have lost his edge. I can't really put my finger on what has happened to him, he just seems to have completely lost his edge.

I was going OTT...it's like the timelss excuse, "The dog ate my homework". Although having said that, I do know someone who's goat ate his homework, and out junior school teacher didn't believe him funnily enough.

Whenever weird things happened to me, I saved them up to use as excuses, especially if there was a bit of evidence to show the teacher.

Well, somebody (not me) once noticed that the handle on Joey's fridge moved to the other side, then it started jumping left & right, then finally settled down on the new side. When I put the episodes into the production order, the handle moved just once, and stayed there.

The ratings are indeed dropping, although it's not too bad, since they are coming down from up high. But if the drops continue, it's bad news for BKC, who were foolish (or arrogant) to drop the Joey/Rachel story.

But ignoring clip shows (which are a special case): 214 "TOW the Prom Video" was the 10th made in Season 2, so it was shown 4 episodes late; 114 "TOW the Candy Hearts" was the 18th made in Season 1, so it was shown 4 episodes early; and 118 "TOW All the Poker" was the 13th made in Season 1, so it was shown 5 episodes late.

Okay, so Ross told Phoebe and that made sense, but her quips about what he was doing in his sleep were clearly out of line. More importantly, they weren't funny at all. The only slightly amusing part was that Ross's audience was an Armenian family, which made me wonder whether it was the family that really liked him in the uncut version of 514 TOW Everybody Finds Out.

This whole situation never made any sense. Joey could have told Ross when they were walking around in the hospital.

On a side note, Phoebe thinking of herself as the"Puppetmaster" sounded like it was inspired by the Puppet Guy..

You'd think that Joey would be used to this situation, seeing that he has seven sisters and several nieces and nephews.

Jack Geller was plain awful in the entire episode. I cringed every time he was supposed to have a "joke." Granted, he's infamous for saying inappropriate things, but this was way past what he has done earlier. And why on earth did Monica and Chandler have a storyline which seemed like a bad first draft of their plot in 823/824?

This was probably the funniest part of the episode. "It does sound like something I would do..."

I thought it was cute how excited Phoebe got when she thought she was about to learn another secret. :)

It's good to see that Monica and Rachel had a scene together, and Monica was sensible enough to make Rachel realise what she really wanted.

Rachel actually admitted to be in the wrong. A feat in itself, perhaps?

And a storyline that looked like it was resolved rather quickly, suddenly took a very different turn.

I agree that it was too much back and forth. It seemed like a poorly directed farce to me, and Elliott Gould only made it worse.

MLB and LK were okay, but all in all this episode was a big disappointment.

It's not about having "a good look," it's the fact that Ross is used to this and doesn't feel uncomfortable about it. Joey needs to move to Europe and get used to breastfeeding.

Awful, awful, awful. I hated it. Don't get me wrong, it's okay to have these jokes sometimes, but only if they're done right. For instance, Ross had a funny joke with the leather pants and the couch in 511 TOW All the Resolutions. However, I expect more from Friends, and this was just gross and immature.

This episode has to be one of the weakest premieres ever. The humour was off, Jack Geller was way too gross, and the main plot seemed more like an old-fashioned farce. Next episode, please!

Well, there were roses in his bouquet in 824 as well, but it's obviously not the same bouquet. The easiest way to tell the bouquets are different is to look at the big green leaf/foliage plant that was there in 824, but it had disappeared by the time Ross came to Rachel's room in 901.

Exactly. Monica's scene with Rachel in 824 was one of the best scenes in the entire finale.

I would probably notice it if it was that extravagant, but none of my grandmas have that kind of taste in jewelry.

He was supposed to be in season 9, though, but apparently, this new show was more tempting.

It was a good thing that Cliff with the broken leg didn't show up in the episode. If she was busy elsewhere perhaps she would have spared us the lame jokes on Ross touching himself. As if they didn't have enough embarrassing sex jokes out of Jack, they had to make Phoebe thrown in some.

I can't believe that Monica doesn't recognise her grannys ring. So, Rachel doesn't have romantic feelings for Joey. That's not a surprise, we all knew that. We were just hoping that she would develop those feelings sometime sooner or later.

Was Rachel just lying that Joey proposed to her or did she really think that he'd proposed? I'm just saying this because she tends to blurt out lies to cover her mistakes and then later admits to them only when forced to.

Well, I wanted to see this angle. To see if Joey or Rachel would wonder about her accepting the proposal but Joey is portrayed as though he never had any feelings for her. Just because he insists on R&R getting together too, doesn't mean that he isn't in love with her anymore.

I don't know if they'll pursue this storyline further in the season but if they keep dropping and picking this storyline whenever it's sweeps time, it's really going to be an awful season...

I think most of the disappointment surrounding this episode concerns just how insubstantial it was. Most viewers could surmise Rachel and Joey were not going to get together since they had played that relationship out last season and she had just given birth to Ross' child. Therefore, the whole show was the awkwardness and confusion of Joey trying to clear up the confusion while Phoebe just deepened it. A lot of the jokes seemed to rely on the friends doing caricatures of themselves. Joey's extreme reaction to Rachel's breast, Ross can't remember if he proposed, Phoebe calls herself the puppet-master, and Monica has to reconcile with her parents (father) -- again. No new territory was covered.

This sort of adolescent, bawdy humor is becoming standard fare on sitcoms now, though one can still be shocked by, for example, masturbation jokes. The real problem comes from not having a story with any depth to give these crude jokes any perspective.

It's what comes of knowing that it's the final season. They're not bothered by having to keep the quality up, to ensure that the series continues. OTOH, if there is a Season 10 and beyond, they'll have to start being more creative again. At least the cast is trying hard.
