I'm scared some UK people might bite my head of paranoid spoiler space just in case.... S P O I L E R

ok.. is it me or is there a hell of a lot we don't know about dear Pheebs ??

I mean for starters she used to live in Prague she has a criminal record it has been hinted that she got married in Vegas once (remember 601) and does anyone know how she met Monica ??

someone said they went to college together but Phoebe didn't go to high school.. so could she have possibly gone to college ?? someone else said she just applied to live with Monica and they became friends. It is clear the link is with Monica.....

also.. who moved into that building first?? Chandler or Monica ?? I think Monica cos it was her grandmothers... she probably realised there was the apartement accross the hall for let, and Chandler was looking for a place.. so he moved in. ha.. I think I've cracked it !! any thoughts ??

take care keep smiling :) !! HeLeNa *!* "I've got a science question. If all the homo sapiens were, in fact, *homo*

I don't think that Phoebe meant that she had got married in Vegas, I think she said what she did because she had told Ross & Rachel (in their drunken state) that you could get married in Vegas and it didn't count anywhere else.

Oh yes she did. Phoebe *definitely* got married in Vegas, and she is still married to the guy. Nothing to do with her first husband Duncan either.

If you can't see that in the show, then watch the documentary on the making of ep.601, in which Marta Kauffman was concerned that a minority of viewers might not understand this point, so Lisa Kudrow suggested that they consult the studio audience - who all replied that they had understood it.

Sorry, Tennant Stuart.

But since she was married to Duncan, and we haven't seen her go to Vegas since the series started, doesn't that mean that one of her marriages didn't count? And to get a divorce surely the marriage had to be legal?

Couldn't help you with the US side of things, but Ross's marriage to Emily was never valid. :) According to my RS class (which I got an A in, btw), some technicality means that if a citizen (or national, I think either) of a foreign country is to marry in England, *both* partners must stay there for 21 working days for the marriage to be valid. Ross and Emily definitely didn't, and as a result the marriage was null and void as of when Ross left the country. Thank you very much <takes a bow>. :)

Course, I don't know the technicalities of Ross and Rachel's marriage, but given that I understand Vegas is actually pretty stringent on things like that in order to avoid too much trouble, I would guess it wouldn't be valid on the grounds of not being of sound mind, or something.

Old argument Tina. The building they married in *cannot* have been licensed (variety of reasons not rehashed here!), so irrespective of how long he'd been there, or whatever, it was never a valid marriage. They could both have been English and it still wouldn't have counted. Kind of wrecks the "no divorces - just the one divorce" joke (and subsequent deliberately non-spoiled s6 jokes).

I was joking, hence smiley. :) I didn't know that about the building, but now that I think about it you're probably right.

year you're right...It really had to be pushing it to believe rthey actually got married when they were THAT drunk.... so it never was a marriage ?? that means there never was a divorce so our dear lovely Ross has only had two divorces... lucky him !!!

My parents got married in a house..so how could you say that it cannot have been licensed because of the buidling?

I dont think we have enough evidence to decide the validity of the marriage.

Hellooooo!!! After getting drunk in Vegas, Activia doodled cat whiskers on his/her face and miaowed this little lot at a statue...

We have more than enough, actually - the building was partially demolished and it would *not* still have its license to wed people in, and they broke the UK rules for international marriages the day after the ceremony anyway. It wasn't valid, therefore Ross should not have been divorced *three* times, as his marriage to Emily was never valid in the first place.

In England and Wales, you have to be married in a venue that is licensed for marriages. That excludes the "church" they got married in because it would have lost its licence before they started demolishing it (when it was deconsecrated). Therefore Ross and Emily's marriage was not legal even from the moment they said "I do".

Your parents, presumably, did not marry in England or Wales. ;)

The rules about what buildings can be licensed only changed in the mid1990s, as well, so prior to that we could only wed in church or registry office.

Jac

This is a TV SHOW so they can do whatever they want. If they say that Ross and Rachel got married in Vegas THAT drunk, then they did.

Ross and

Hello??? No one was talking about THAT marriage being valid. Stupid, maybe.

Religious Studies - they make everyone take it to GCSE short course standard at my school.

There was me thinking you'd taken a short law course along with everything else - I was *so* impressed! :) "Religious Studies" was the only thing *I* thought "RS" could be, and I *knew* that it wasn't that. (At our school it was called "RI" for "Religious Instruction", and it was *not* compulsory!)

Ooh, *definitely*. :-)

:)

Well, at my old school it was called RE. Oh, I don't know. :) I do wish I'd had the option to take Law, or more options in general, at my school, though - if I'd been able to do Film Studies at GCSE, or Law, or something like that, I would have probably done even better than I did.

The main reason I know about marriage laws and such is because 'Marriage and Divorce' was one of the modules. And because we were studying that part at the time R&E's 'marriage' was being shown on Sky, I had an excuse to ask my RS teacher about certain things. :) Luckily, just about his whole family are fans of Friends as well, so I was able to ask without too much difficulty. :) (He's cool anyway, though - he's my sixth-form homeroom tutor now instead of my RS teacher, though. :))

It's not you, there's about five episodes worth of flashbacks required.

And possibly Minsk, and almost certainly Italy (she's fluent).

She admits to knifing a cop, and she's been in a lot of interrogation rooms.

More than hinted, she definitely married her second husband there, wrongly believing that it did not count outside Vegas.

Phoebe is going to adult college, though it's rarely referred to.

Your two "someones" are wrong, we don't really know how they met, though a good guess would be that Monica rescued her from a life on the street.

Monica was living there first, with her grandmother or following her we don't know. She & Ross might have lived there until he got married, but that would be sheer speculation.

Anyway, across the hall were Bob & Kip, and then when Bob left, Kip needed a new roommate, who was Chandler (presumably suggested by Ross). By this time Monica & Kip were lovers, and Phoebe was living there. When Monica broke up with Kip, he was ostracised by the rest of group, and left. Chandler found a new roommate, but he had Joey foisted on him by Mr.Heckles instead.

Hope this is of some help, Tennant.

I don't think a spoiler is needed for episodes that aren't of this season. This is from last season (5) when Ross just broke up with Emily, and the group (except Joey) doesn't know about Monica and Chandler.
