This maybe slightly off topic but is there a Yank out there who could explain what the february sweeps are all about.
Plus... what is a freshman?
this seems to come up a lot in not just Friends but in US shows.

The Sweeps are the weeks where the advertising rates for the next few months are set. Naturally, TV stations try to grab the biggest ratings they can, which leads to a lot of shows having Big Event episodes (and others being temporarily displaced for more sure-fire ratings grabbers).
I'm glad we don't have those over here. Having lots and lots of Big Events on TV all at once sounds wearying.
Someone in their first year at University. 2nd years are sophomores (as in sophomoric humour), 3rd years are juniors, 4th years are seniors.
The same terms are sometimes used for High School.

Actually, as a fan of Friends (and other shows), the whole Sweeps thing is maddening, because they tend to throw in a lot of Stunt Plotting and/or Big Name Guest Stars, which are generally inconsistent with the rest of the season. Very disruptive and frustrating as a viewer.
Plus, the Sweeps period is usually when the big event mini-series are aired, and _that_ disrupts viewing for a week or more as well. Hmph!
James is utterly correct here. FWIW, the average age of high school freshmen (also called "frosh" sometimes) is 14; university freshmen are around 18.

Yes, that's right. They happen in February and May each year. I look forward to sweeps mostly because they have new episodes of every show for the whole month. Other than that, though, it's mostly stunts big fans of shows can live without.
Actually, I'm pretty sure those terms are *always* used for high school. I'm currently a high school senior..and am in the period where I find out where I get to be a college freshman. March is such a slow month...

It depends on where you live, actually. Some school systems only have three years for high school, so the same scheme cannot apply (a friend of mine lives a couple of towns over, and his high school only had 10th, 11th, and 12th grade.. Junior High wasn't over until he finished 9th grade).

As for 9th grade at junior high, that's probably just referred to as 9th grade.

Plus sometimes they dont use the terms at much for example my cousin goes to a school tahts 7-12 they call 7 and 8 7th and 8th graders and then freshman sophomore junior senior BUT they usually dont refer to them as freshman, ect. just by their grades. I think freshman is something to do with the first year of a college or university or something
other than that.. it sounds kinda rude..... maybe not
