Schwimmer Denies the End of 'Friends' Wed, Jun 20, 2001 03:50 PM PDT

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - If NBC's must-see sextet is breaking up, you didn't hear it from David Schwimmer.

The "Friends" star is denying reports that he said the show was coming to an end, reports the BBC News Online. Schwimmer was quoted in the British press as saying that the sitcom's ninth season would be its last.

"Mr Schwimmer never made the statement or implied it in any of his interviews while promoting the upcoming mini-series 'Band of Brothers,'" Schwimmer's PR agency says in a statement.

A BBC News Online poll has indicated that the loss of the long-running series would be less than catastrophic for viewers: 66 percent of the more than 7000 respondents felt that it was time for the "Friends" to go their separate ways, while only 33.8 percent wanted to watch them quip their way through their 30s.

The show needs a spin-off. Maybe they should have Ross & Rachel marry and have their own show. Kind of like filling the slot left by Mad About You (young newly married couple living in New York).

But, along those lines anyway, here's what they could do. Cancel the show. Let the actors go their separate ways and do a series of flop movies and TV pilots for a couple of years.

Then, after about 5 years, when it's obvious that none of them can get paying jobs, create a new show called, "Friends: The Later Years". Invite back anyone who isn't employed and set the show in the Jersey suburbs. Add a few new characters (spouses, children, neighbors, etc.) and age all the main characters fifteen years (ignoring the fact that, in real time, it's only five).

Heat evenly and season to taste. Serve while warm.

Heh. While I personally would like to see more R&R, history is against spin-offs. Let's look at some past example:

Joanie Loves Chachi (for less than a season)

Three's a Crowd (Three's Company was vapid enough)

AfterMASH (Rosalind Chao was the only bright spot)

Tabitha (I had enough problems with two Darren's)

and, my personal favorite spin-off...

Galactica 1980!

Given this and the other spectacular failures of past and recent times, I just don't see a "Rachel Loves Ross" kinda thing happening. :)

Why have only one show with a bunch of big name comics when you could have five or six? It would be to NBC's interest to break the show up, giving each actor their own show.

NBC seems to be going for all Law & Order, all the time, so why not just create "Law & Order: The Bings" and "Law & Order: Joey's Turf" and maybe "Law & Order: Fashion Maven" (Rachel as a crime solving fashion reporter for the NY Times).
