708 - The One Where Chandler Doesn't Like Dogs

Fair episode this week - not bad, but not memorable either. As with last week, my expectations may have been too high. We have been treated to marvelous Thanksgiving episodes in the past. Unfortunately, this one didn't rank as high.

First, Phoebe/Chandler/Monica:

This was an okay story, but I didn't feel it was good enough to be the 'main' story. The one thing previous Thanksgiving episodes had in common was a major central plot. The dog story was fine as a regular subplot, but the writers tried too hard to make this carry the episode. At least the characters were bearable today. I wonder if the dog is now a permanent fixture on the show…

Second, Rachel/Tag:

After a two-week absence, Tag returns. This was the weakest element of today's show. Only one word can describe it: BORING. Does anybody really care about this couple? All of their scenes put me to sleep. They weren't funny or interesting. Where are the writers going with this relationship?

Finally, Ross:

For some strange reason, I have been enjoying the filler stories much more than the main stories this year. Ross was actually in character, wanting to prove his intelligence. I probably laughed here more than anywhere else in the episode. Still, I wish the writers could give this poor guy something more important to do...

Joey was only used in a supporting role today, with some minor contributions to all three stories. I would have hoped for more, but he did well with what little he had.

Well, it looks like we have two weeks of repeats until the Christmas episode. It was bound to happen sooner or later…

I thought I was anticipating the punch line to this story, but I was wrong. I assumed that the state he was forgetting was going to be New York, his own state! But I still could be right; since he named Nevada twice, he's still forgetting one, but we'll probably never be told which one.

By the way, I'm a Canadian, and after the episode I tried the test myself. I got fifty!!!

--- I did the same test afterwards. I am SO ashamed of myself. I got to 46. Would you believe I actually FORGOT "Nevada"? (I also forgot Maryland, Mississippi (????), and New Jersey.) How sad is this? :-) (It's time to get one of those round, blue things.)

I just wanna point something out to people, I thought about this on the way home today (I think too much) They've done the work relationship storyline. I swear they have! and they got it over and done with in one episode! and it was funny! Who remembers the episode in season one when Chandler really liked this girl at work, and ended up asking her out, and then they broke up cause he lied about her to the others. Do you see where I'm going with this? If you don't I apologise

I think it's so neat that an episode actually makes us think! I mean I am completely flabbergasted at how many of you (and me too) were practicing listing the 50 states after seeing the Friends do it.

Having a brother whose hobby is the 50 states helps me, though. :)

I liked the episode. It was nice to have just a comfortable ordinary episode with no huge plot developments.

And I was with whoever it was that thought Ross had forgotten New York. That would have been a good exit line. :)
