As soon as the episode ended tonight it hit me that I wouldn't be able to see what is next til after the Olympics. I couldn't help it. I just yelled out NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! My husband started laughing at me and told me I sounded just like Monica when I did that. Just thought I would share.
I thought that was a great cliffhanger. It must have been for my reaction.

Umm...i think Ross is shocked(duh!) and he will turn around and slowly sit down on the couch in central perk and ponder it for a few seconds (sort of like his reaction to finding to rachel being pregnant)...and then he'll ask Joey how long he's felt that way. And Joey will immediately say that he never planned on this happening. And Ross will say "well..i mean Rachel and I arent' together." And the rest i don't know...i'll have to think about it.

I thought it was one of the BEST cliffhangers I've seen since "Who Shot JR?"!!!! Compared to one of the other best "Friends" cliffhangers when Ross says Rachel's name at his and Emily's wedding, this one last night was right up there with the best!!!
The Olympics alternate 4 yrs (88-92) then 2 yrs (92-94) then 4 yrs (94-98) and then 2 yrs (98-02). I think it may only be the winter Olympics that does it this way, though. I can't remember the summer olympics ever doing this.

Up until 1994, we just had the Olympics--both winter and summer--all in one year, every four years. 1992 was the last time we had both winter/summer in one year. 1994 was the first time the winter Olympics were separated out. Since then, it's been:
1994--Winter Olympics 1996--Summer Olympics 1998--Winter 2000--Summer 2002--Mean, ol' _Friends_-interrupting Winter Olympics.
I don't know the official reason for splitting them that way. I've heard people say that it's because the Winter Olympics were always overshadowed the old way. I think that's silly. Next thing you know, we'll start having the Olympics every year--indoor winter, outdoor winter, indoor summer, outdoor summer (uh-oh--I've probably given them ideas!).
Oh, I like figure skating okay, but hate the hype so will skip it out of spite. :)

It's more of a marketing thing. It costs a lot of bucks to host the Olympics; it costs a lot to cover it; it costs a lot to advertise. A single annual budget, even for truly huge companies, were finding it a strain to try to take advantage of both huge events in one year. By spreading it out, they get more repeat advertising business.
Of course, that's just one reason.

I know--I've heard this, too--though I think it's a terrible reason to split them off. We're always given these lofty ideals supposedly embodied by the Olympics, but then it comes down to pandering to corporate interests. Bleah. Am I the only one who misses the once-every-four-years extravaganza?
On a side note, when the Winter Olympics were first split off in 1994, I asked a bunch of people the "What gives" question, and most of them said, "Oh, hasn't it always been done this way?" That was bizarre.

The advantage WE have, compared to . . . let's say Dallas' cliff-hanger over who shot JR . . . is that we only have to wait over two skipped episodes. For the Dallas cliffhanger, and the many, many others around that time, we had to wait all summer long. I'm anxious, but I can wait.
Did anyone else get very emotional during the opening ceremony? I was on the verge of tears when I saw France and some other country holding American flags...oh dear was that absolutely the most caring and sweet thing people could do or what?!
