I've heard so many rumours about contracts being / not being signed for a new series of Friends... can somebody shed any light on this matter for once and for all...

It's not so much a rumor as speculation based on a fact; as of right now, last time I checked, the cast had *not* signed new contracts. Whether or not they will remains to be seen, and I think the matter is by no means over, but yes, I wouldn't be surprised if the show were in some jeopardy. (Please note that "jeopardy" is not a synonym for "doomed.")

Besides, the stars movie careers have not been awe-inspiring. What success they've had has been due to their name, rather than acting performance or movie quality.
