The term "obgyn"?

As English is my second language (My first is Danish) I sometimes come across English terms that I do not fully understand.

Most of them I am able to look up, but a few I can't find.

The term "obgyn" (or "o. b. g. y. n."?) for instance. It is heard now and again on Friends.

I believe it's another word for gynaechologist (did I spell it correctly?) but exactly what does it mean?.

I haven't been able to find it in any of my dictionaries.

Another one is "tri-state-area" or "tri-county-area". Is that simply three states/counties bordering on one another?

OB-GYN refers to an obstetrician or gynecologist. In short, a baby doctor. The states of Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey are really close together in a certain area.

And, a baby doctor (or children's doctor) is actually a Pediatrician.

That's exactly what it is. Friends is set in New York City, so their tri-state area is New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. In South Jersey, the tri-state area is New Jersey, Delaware and Pennsylvania.
