Probably because as the seasons have rolled on, the humour has become much more dependent on knowledge of previous episodes/seasons. It's now reached the point whereby if you miss about two or three consecutive episodes, most of the jokes in the next episode won't make any sense.

In short, it's rewarding long-term viewers at the expense of short-term viewers. Even some long-term viewers are getting a little bit tired of things though.

It's been the top-rated sitcom since season five (once Seinfeld was off the air). Its position during season 6 among all shows slipped because there were like 5 million episodes of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (ie. they counted Tuesday's WWTBAM as one program, and Wednesday's WWTBAM as another separate program).

It's right now the #2 or 3 show (#1 sitcom) on the air right now, but who knows with Survivor (IMO: it'll slip, but I don't think it'll be that big a deal; it will hurt Cursed big time).

There's not the slightest doubt that Friends is the top rated US sitcom in the UK though - New Frasier eps average around 3m, and even with it's recent slump, new Friends eps average 4.1m.

It depends how you classify shows like Simpsons & Ally McBeal though.

I suppose Dharma & Greg counts too, but that only seems to get post- midnight screenings.

Oh yes, there's also 'For Your Love' starring the gorgeous Dedee Pfeiffer, but that gets just about the worst timeslot of all - around 5am on Sundays on C4.

Normally C4 at least give shows a chance at a decent time before they dump them in early hours slots. Mind you, in the above case, the show itself is fairly bland - only Dedee Pfeiffer making it worthwhile to watch.

Great - a fellow Dedee fan!

It's SO hard to track her appearances though - she only gets low billing on most movies & shows she appears in, so even Digiguide often misses them since they usually only list the top-billed actors. An IMDB printout & detailed movie listing is essential.

I have spotted 2 forthcoming appearances though :

Sky Cinema 2 - Frankie & Johnny 5th Jan 9pm * Sky Premier 1 etc - Toughlove 5th Jan 1.05am + various other screenings.

* Alas I wont be able to tape this, it runs opposite both Angel & Becker. :(

I remember when both the BBC and Granada, years ago, showed the film within 3 or 4 days of each other because one was meant to show an old film with the same name, but mistakenly cocked up :)

Not much point - my DVD player isn't multi-region (or at least I haven't found a hack for it yet - Sharp DV600).

My favourite Dedee movie has to be 'The Horror Show' from 1989 - she has a revealing shower scene! Only over-the-shoulder shots, but you can still see a couple of 'points' of interest! :)

Look out for it the Sci-Fi channel's fright nights.

Not really a practical proposition, as there's no way to tell who watches it both times. Some people, such as myself, tape it first on Sky, then retape it off C4 because they have no DOG & C4's picture quality is better.

No, cause people who watch the C4 may also have watched Sky One.

This is a very good point, and not one I recall being made before.

However, there has almost always been a long-term romantic storyline in the show, whether it be Ross & Rachel or Chandler & Monica.
