Top 10-watched shows for 2000-2001 season

According to Entertainment Weekly, here are the Top 10-watched shows (weekly averages, I think it includes reruns and recap episodes, not just first-run episodes) for the Oct. 2000-May 2001 season:

As for the other "Reality-TV" game shows besides Survivor: (Big Brother, like Survivor 1, was running during the summer, so it was not on the list)

• The Mole 12.6
• Boot Camp 11.2

and much, much lower... . . 146.Chains of Love 2.2

Though CoL is on UPN, so it's a little misleading. Still, only 4 shows had fewer viewers than that one. Pretty horrible even for UPN/WB.

In Britain, we don't begin a new season until January, but then we get one or two new episodes *every* Thursday to finish just after the USA.

Ill take the USA method - 8 months of a "season" which covers about 36 weeks with 22 episodes (and 14 reruns or preemptions). That means there's a 4 month period during the summer when tv viewership is way down, vacationing, outdoor activities and movies are way up, that you know there are no new episodes. You get the 8 month period with a sense that your show is on or current so to speak with an occassional break esepcially during holiday periods when you wouldnt be watching anyway. I think thats a good balance between momentum, as you site, and practicality, and also not having to wait so long for the process to begin again. In Britain you rarely get series that last 5 to 10 years as we do here, so maybe thats not as much a concern.

Fair enough, but it's wrong & very misleading to compare the ratings of a show with 13 new episodes in 13 weeks with two other shows that have 22 new episodes & 14 old episodes in 36 weeks. If they added in all the viewers for the CBS timeslot in the 23 weeks before Survivor began then the average for all 36 weeks would be very low.

Coronation Street - 40 years (since 1960) Emmerdale - over 20 (since sometime in 70s) Eastenders - 16 (since (1985) Brookside - 15 or so (since early 1980's) Casualty - approaching 20 (1985 I think) Last of the Summer Wine - over 20 (1970's I think) Dr. Who - 27 (1963 - 1987) The Bill - 16 I think (1985 I think) Watch with Mother - God knows how long it ran, but at least 20 (1950's - 1970's) Some of the kids shows, notably Blue Peter and Newsround are around 30 to 40 years old (1960's) Tomorrow's World - 30 odd (1960's) Match of the Day - 30 odd (1957 I think)

All of these bar Dr. Who and Watch with Mother are still on

Yep, but you forgot the longest running show of all, The Sky At Night, shown without taking a break since about 1956 or 1957.
